Either everyone likely to buy already had or nobody watched the show, either way I'm disappointed. (I sold more AFSR my first week back in November than post-Grammy week.) Conversely the Dylan sales went way up. I can't figure it out. Ric >> Worry not, Ric.. a very reliable source assures us that nationally AFSR sales went up 400% and the album will re-enter the Billboard Hot 200 at #111 next week. Don't know where it'll go from there, but with the continuing campaign on TV (Shawn is everywhere now!) and the media (there will be a big lead feature in Billboard on Shawn's career story coming in the next week or two that will drive the media coverage on her) and at radio with Nothing On Me as the new single, AGF is confident that the final chapter on AFSR has not been written. She appears to enjoy these situations and blends in quite well with the other actors. I'm sure she'll continue to be in demand as a guest star on other sitcoms and dramas, but after a while the novelty of playing herself and coming on to sing a song will wear off. While I love the idea of Shawn being enormously successful and a mega-star, the thought of seeing her on "Must See TV" sends a chill down my spine. I loved the cameo she did on "Suddenly Susan" and I'm sure the "Fame LA" episode was great, but Shawn is a performer and song-writer, not an actor. Don't get me wrong, Shawn is a Capricorn (sorry, had to throw a little astrology in here) and can do anything she puts her mind to. But where would that leave her career as a performer? When would she tour? I guess I'm being kind of selfish, but think of it this way: Do we want every brainless boob sitting in front of a TV watching our Shawn? Think of the people who are out there in the world, who aren't on this list. Scary, huh? Jason He-Who-Had-To-Throw-His-Two-Cents-In ******************* 'All this time I've been a face in the crowd. I agree with all those who say that it is a bad thing-for both Shawn and her popularity. She will surely become popular the first few weeks---but alas, just as many new television stars, her popularity will plummet. Also, the only thing that will save the pilot ratings is heavy advertising. If that fails, only Shawn fans will watch. Most people at my school say "Shawn who???" Sorry I just had to get that out. I have written once or twice to my local, and favored, radio station, Y-100 to see if they could play any other songs of Shawn's. Perhaps "Suicide Alley", my other favorite below "Sunny". No response yet. I must tell everyone I hate living in Delaware (don't ask me where it is please. Dela-where?) and singers and tours hardly ever come around here. Please, if anyone knows about anything about Shawn coming even close to Delaware, please inform me! Also, I had no idea Shawn was 42! She looks so young!!!!!! Perhaps in her 30s. Here are a few tidbits of news hot from the press! ===================== 1) The rumor about Shawn and a TV show with Dar Williams or Lucy Kaplansky is just that.. a rumor. We here in Patrick Springs and others in parts of Sydney would call it a "Big Ole Big Dawg Rumor." Sorry folks, there is no chance of that happening. (There may, however, be an upcoming appearance on Xena: Warrior Princess.... HOLD IT! BigHAIR IS KIDDING!! I'M ONLY KIDDING!!!!! ) 2) There have been some changes on the itinerary so Shawn Groupies be sure to mark your calendars accordingly: - There was a show added in Houston on April 2 at Theater at Bayou Place! - There will some kind of event in Pittsburgh on March 28 for radio station B94 to make up for Xmas show that had to be cancelled when Shawn got sick. It will most likely be an afternoon event with 35-40 minute set. Check with the radio station for details which are to be announced. - The Santa Barbara show is being moved one day earlier to April 15 to allow Shawn to participate in LA on April 16 at a benefit Don Henley is organizing for his Walden charity. The benefit will feature artists like Joni Mitchell and Shawn singing standards with a 40-piece orchestra. No details yet if this will be televised later or not, but it should receive major media coverage. (Wowee... this sounds awesome!!!!) - The SF show has been switched to the Warfield. (John...take note!) ;) . - Shawn will do the 2 Liliths with full band to close out her pre-baby touring in full force. They're shooting for the -- Pelton, Smith, Rhodes, Petty Lineup-- the lineup that you may be familiar with on the TV appearances - -- e.g., recent Leno. The exact Lilith dates may however shift from what was previously announced. LA at Rose Bowl may be on 6/27 with SD the day before, but confirmation is yet to come. 3) And don't forget about the Fame LA broadcast. It will feature Harvey Fierstein as Shawn's manager and they will do a duet on Polaroids which my sources say is "musically horrifying but really very cute and funny." Heheheh... That was a quote directly from a source verrrrrrry close to Harvey and not a BigHAIR commentary. ;) (Wanted to make that clear!) :) And there you have it. - --This has been a Shawn Colvin Update brought to you by the Shiny Happy People at AGF Entertainment. - --The title "Another Round of News" came from the brilliant mind & intellectual stylings of Denise "Totally Hot" Capotosto. I wonder why Shawn and Lucy (or any artist) have to be pigeonholed into the serious singer-songwriter mold. Isn't this something that each of us have to deal with and try to overcome when we try to introduce the artists we love to our friends? Can't we allow that these extremely talented people can *add to* and develop *new* areas of expression? The entertainment world is full of very talented people who shine in multiple diverse areas. I guess it's just surprising to me that so many of us are so ready not to like something like this based on very little information. Maybe it's just human nature. I guess I just think of things a bit differently... I prefer to let the artists do as they please (as if I have any influence anyway), and then once the project is released, whatever it may be and in whatever form, then I'll evaluate it based on its' own merit. - -John (sorry, guess I tossed in about $.08 there....) ................................. . . No really - i can see this. Shawn could play Xena's new arch-nemesis, Colvinsto, and her greatest weapon would be her incredibly strong arm muscles, formed from years of playing guitar and maybe or maybe not also from scooping icecream at Baskin & Robbins....hehehh.... i like it! That counts us all out then... ;) ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. Shawn seemed to be in good voice and spirits, despite some first night rough spots forgetting bits of 'Tenderness on the Block' and 'Wichita Skyline'. She played a shortish set, hitting most of 'A Few Small Repairs' and pulling songs here and there from her other albums. I neglected to bring a pen, so I don't have a set list to share. The opening cover tune was 'Someday' and for me the highlight was, believe it or not, 'Sunny Came Home.' I swear I've heard that song a zillion times over the last year, but I think it's a testament to the song's quality that I'm not sick of it yet. Anyway, Shawn did a slower almost haunting version of Sunny. 'Dry is good and wind is better' sent shivers down my spine. As usual Shawn had stories to tell. I won't spoil them for future concert-goers, but the one about her two encounters with Bob Dylan at two seperate post Grammy parties is funny. Setting up 'Tenderness on the Block' she talked about having a baby and her segue into the song was one word: "epidural." She also let slip what she wants to name her baby, but we, the audience, promised not to tell. So I won't blab. Nya nya. The opening act was Anna Egge (hope I spelled that right) from Austin who's really great. I ain't just saying that either. Her guitar playing reminded me of Steve Earle. My favorite song was one about a woman named Anne Marie. Good stuff! I had a good time and am glad to have gone, especially since I suspect Shawn won't be coming through this part of the world for quite a while. And despite some rain, for once the drive home to Boston wasn't treacherous...
