It might be fun for you to know that in -95, a very famous swedish singer called Rebecka Tornqvist,(if you live in europe you might have seen her videos on day-time MTV), recorded a version of "I donīt know why". She recorded it with a small jazz-trio, using only brush-snare, cymbals, upright-bass and grand-piano. Can't believe she's not stopping in Chicago on this tour!! Dave >By CHIP BROWNAssociated Press Writer AUSTIN (AP) - Shawn Colvin putters around her Lake Austin home, getting organized for a solo acoustic concert tour that starts in New Hampshire on Sunday. > Between goofing around with her curly-haired preschool niece, Grace, and spending some quiet time with her husband, Mario Erwin, a photographer and graphic artist she met waterskiing on Lake Austin two years ago, she has been looking at the record sale charts. > She didn't used to. But she can't help herself these days. > At 42, she has been singing for a living for 24 years. She has released four studio albums, plus a live album under an independent label. Although her debut album ``Steady On'' won a Grammy in 1990 for best contemporary folk recording, none of her first four albums went gold. > Now, she's about to go platinum (1 million copies sold) thanks in large part to two top Grammy Awards - song of the year and record of the year - for the top 10 hit ``Sunny Came Home'' off of her fourth album, ``A Few Small Repairs.'' > Throw in the fact that she is expecting her first child - a baby girl due in August - and it's shaping up to be a year of firsts for Colvin. > ``I got used to working the way I worked, putting an album out every two or three years and touring to make a living, never really thinking about charts or album sales,'' she said. ``I have basically just stayed afloat.'' > A native of South Dakota who dropped out of Southern Illinois University, Colvin moved to Austin in 1975 to perform with a country rock band called the Dixie Diesels. > In 1980, she went solo and moved into a mice-infested New York City apartment in the same block with some Hell's Angels, playing bars and clubs. She developed a loyal following in small venues - always hoping for but never expecting more. > ``You want to think that you deserve the accolades,'' said Colvin, who was signed by Columbia Records in 1988. ``But as to when you get that sort of tip of the hat, one can never say. Sometimes you never do. You just stick with it and do it for the music. This (the Grammys) will certainly help with my profile and ability to sell records, I hope.'' > John Leventhal, her longtime music producer and former boyfriend from those early barroom singing days in New York, says Colvin is finally being appreciated. > ``Shawn is definitely someone who has paid her dues and has been gigging a long time,'' said Leventhal, who also won a Grammy for co-writing ``Sunny Came Home.'' > ``She has made great records and wasn't ever really into imaging,'' he said. ``She is an artist of substance, and it's great that the Grammy Awards have recognized that.'' > Colvin's lyrics are filled with painful stories of loneliness, doubt and love gone wrong, but are shrouded in upbeat melodies that she has long felt were ripe for the pop charts. > Radio and MTV, however, have, for the most part, pigeonholed her strictly as a folk singer, limiting her access to the airwaves. > Her songs rarely appear on MTV because the cable network considers her more suited for VH-1, a lesser watched music channel that favors easy listening. > ``I try not to make it my business to know those statistics because it's too maddening,'' Colvin said. ``But there's no question that MTV has an impact. It's huge exposure. MTV chose not to run my video, even `Sunny Came Home.' I hope they change their mind.'' > Colvin was a regular in the Lilith Fair concert tour launched last summer by Sarah McLachlan, featuring several solo female artists. > Two other members of the tour, Sheryl Crowe and Paula Cole, were up against Colvin for record of the year. > ``I think being nominated with Sheryl and Paula continued the celebration,'' Colvin said. ``It was not a problem, which of course, sounds very easy to say now. But I truly felt that way. I like those women.'' > Colvin will play 28 solo tour stops nationwide through May 1 and then make two appearances with Lilith Fair in late June in Los Angeles and San Diego before slowing down to have her baby. > She said she looks forward to time off after the tour at home in Austin, a place she chose to live because of its lakes and love of music. > ``Sometimes I wonder if things would be easier for my work if I lived in New York or Los Angeles,'' she said. ``But I have maneuvered my life in a direction that felt better to me on the inside and it seems to be paying off. > ``I met my husband here. We're having a child, and I made the best record of my career, in my opinion, here and it's done well for me. So I think it's been a really good move.'' > Colvin's pregnancy comes at a time when she could be cashing in on her Grammy wins with lucrative tour dates through Labor Day. But Colvin, who is in her second marriage, has no regrets. > ``I wanted this baby very much, so my feeling is it can only be good,'' she said. ``It will be a challenge. I don't think I can look at this as a burden or something that will detract. If it's forward motion in my personal life, then it has to be something positive for my work.'' > AP-ES-03-06-98 1347EST > > ><<<< > > - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. All the people are really friendly so far, and meeting people who like Shawn's music fills my heart (people at my school dont like her very much, to much of my disappointment). The Grammys were awesome. I only have Shawn's "A Few Small Repairs" CD, so "Sunny Came Home" was the first song of her's i ever heard. God bless radio! I fell in love with the song instantly, and requested it constantly. If any member of Small-Repairs is in high school, please email me! I would love to talk to someone my age. Adios Melissa >> Welcome to the list, melissa! My name is jean, but most people call me bigHAIR -- i am co-owner of this mailing list. Killer show, although I only saw the first one. Lucy also mentioned that she would be recording an album for Fall release with Dar Williams and others... >> Hi John!! Yes, this is true... I heard about the complete details through the Dar Williams list (I LOVE DAR!!! eeeeeeee!!!! just had to get that out) Lucy, Dar Williams, and Richard Shindell are together compiling a cd of cover songs, at least one of which I know will be an REM song. In fact, i believe they may be an REM tribute cd. I am kind of unclear because Dar's management company asked the list members to tally our votes on what REM songs we would like for them to do. The top runners were Nightswimming and King of Birds, if you guys were curious. I'll let you know as I hear more. Hey Repairpersons! Hot news from the Dar Williams list: Lucy Kaplansky has recently told one of the list members about there being plans for a new television comedy series this coming Fall starring Shawn Colvin and herself. She didn't elaborate on what the comedy pilot was about but what seems to be the assumption is that it may well be based on their lives together as co-performers. I should have checked my mail before going to the Patty Griffin concert tonight because Shawn was there and i could have asked her myself if this rumor was true. Hmmm... this is very interesting. This would work well for Shawn being that she will be a new mom.... she could keep routine hours which will be great for the baby and family (like Rosie O'Donnell did). Shawn is in New Hampshire tomorrow (Sunday) night, so if any list members are there, please ask her for me. Jean... AGF could tell us, maybe?
