In a message dated 98-03-05 21:41:02 EST, Ric Asks: << (I get the feeling early on that Columbia wanted to mold Shawn into that pop chanteuse mode, hence the overproduction on some of Fat City, i.e. the over-orchestrated I Don't Know Why. I'm genuinely interested, did anyone actually prefer the Fat City version to the one on Live '88/Live Tapes?)>> On this, Ric, i hafta agree... if i had to pick a least favourite (like the spelling, kat?) track on Fat City, i'd hafta pick that version of I Don't Know Why. It bothers me, NOT because it is a bad song... I do love the Live '88 version (played the way i think it was meant to be played)... but because anyone hearing shawn do this song if they have never heard her before, doesn't get an idea of who she is as a musician. Heck, ya can't even hear her guitar on the track! If this had been the first song i had ever heard by shawn, i wouldn't have even given it a second thought. Sounded too karaoke-ish for me... And also, i think anyone buying Fat City hoping to hear similar tracks, might be angry that the other songs are not similar. (You know... kind of like that ballad that the band Extreme put out a couple of years ago? "More Than Words"? Nothing like the other tracks.) Ironically, "I Don't Know Why" may have been one of shawn's most successful singles prior to Sunny. Oh well... that's why i am not in the record business :) Okay... while we are on the subject of least favourite songs... (hmmmm ... perhaps i am the only one actually on that subject.. ) hehheh... i gotta bring this up. (Sara -- i just had to.) In "You and the Mona Lisa" there is that line... that i just can't take... maybe i am missing the boat with its significance: "It was just a mirage/ so i hid in the garage/ till somebody called my name.." I am SO at odds with this line. Everytime i hear it, i think, "What IS that? I just don't get it!" I know there just aren't many words that rhyme with mirage... all we could come up with was "massage," "lavage" (<--as in gastric lavage--sorry, the pharmacist in me) and "garbage" (<--hehheh.. if you MAKE it rhyme... ) but... mannnn... i do like the song in general, but i just don't understand that line. It's just such a far cry from "Sometimes the beauty of life hits like lightning washing everything clear/ And these dimmers of doubt flicker/ Fade out and disappear..." sigh. Hey Mark! Perhaps you have a Haiku that might shed some insight? Neil? What do you make of that line? Hehhehh... ok, ok, that's enuff of me... see what i do on my days off? :) ~jean aka bH PS: Hey, what's the French word for "cheese"? ;) now playing in the CD player at a very high volume: Out In The Country - An amazing and stupendous compilation of songs... I have to agree on the over-production of "I Don't Know Why" on Fat City. It really hit home when I heard it in my local Save-Mart grocery store. I recognized it immediately and thought "Cool, it's Shawn", then I was struck by how well it fit with the rest of the music they play. A depressing little shudder went through me at that point. I don't think it's as out of sync with the rest of Fat City as bigHAIR's 'Extreme' (More Than Words) example. That has to be one the all-time winners of the "How long does it take to buy a CD, listen to it, realize you've made a huge non-refundable error, take it to the used CD store for sale or trade" contest. I am glad, however, that IDKW was not the first Shawn song I heard. Shotgun Down the Avalanche was the first. I remember hearing about Shawn's first Grammy way back when, and being happy for her.... You wrote: >> but would someone mind explaining me what Shawn wants to express in "It's like you'e waiting for Godot" or what are the reasons for this particulate refernece ?<< The line is a reference to a play by Samuel Beckett entitled "Waiting for Godot," in which the characters sit around the entire play and talk about the arrival of a character named "Godot." The character never arrives, and people interpret the meaning of this play in various ways: 1) (the most popular interpretation) "Godot" symbolizes God, and they are waiting for Him to show up, which He never does in the play; 2) they are basically waiting for their "ship to come in," which again, never happens, etc. The point being, the characters wait around and put their lives on hold for nothing. That's a rough idea of the reference... it's been a long time since I read the play as a theatre major, so if anyone else has anything else to add, I'll shut up now!!!! Hey all-- Here are a couple of interesting radio anecdotes I've been meaning to share (well, at least they're interesting to me...). First, on our local way cool radio station 103.7, "the mountain", which has been playing Shawn for years, by the way, and even put her face on the side of a city bus (as an advertisement, not as a physical act, of course).... wait, where was I? Oh yeah. The other night I heard a live version of Polaroids on that station that totally blew me away. I LOVED it!!!! There was a lot of rhythm on it, more so than in any of the other live versions I've heard. Anyone have any idea what tour that might be from? Okay, secondly, I finally heard the new single, Nothin on Me, on another Seattle station, 101.5, which plays more typical pop stuff. It was a different version from the one on AFSR-- I only caught the tail end of it, but there were a lot of background vocals. Well, just thought I'd share this with you. - --Lindsey, of the Anna/Lindsey entity ps-- okay, i'm sorry, i do have one more thing to ramble about. In my US History class, we had an assignment to do a report on any American born musician (you can guess who I chose). On Tuesday I get to play a song of Shawn's and try to convert my taste-deprived classmates. Any suggestions on what one would be best? - --l.c. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body.
