Hi - Reluctant first posting here ... signed up just before the Grammys, and was amused to see it appears so many of y'all live in Richmond or elsewhere in Va. I just moved from Roanoke/Richmond to Michigan. I wanted to shed a little light on That's What I Get Paid for, and its release. I occasionally write for the Music Monitor (it has a website, but I can't remember the URL - should be available on any search and contains the interview), a magazine published by a Va./NC record chain called the Record Exchange. Anyway, I was fortunate enough to get a promo CD and have a phone interview with Shawn right before AFSR came out. Knowing we were both huge Neil Finn fans (I know there are others among you), I couldn't resist asking about the song, since it had been mentioned on the CH list. Shawn explained that before the sessions that wound up yielding the album, she had recorded some material with versatile musician Malcolm Burn producing. That's What I Get Paid For, having been finished as others already described, was done during those sessions. I don't know what else was recorded or why they weren't continued. However, perhaps for continuity's sake, the decision was later made to use only material from the Leventhal/Kalodner sessions for the release, which makes sense to me. Unfortunately, that left TWIGPFor out in the proverbial cold. She said that she liked the track a lot, so much that she hoped that instead of it getting pillaged for domestic b-side use this time around, she would be able to hold onto it and release it on the next proper US album. Oh, well. Personally, I like the song OK, but it does sound more like a b-side than a single. Regarding the UK release, she said she thought the label had later included it on that CD because the track's Finn connection (CHouse gets a lot more deserved respect in the UK) might help raise the profile of the release over there. I don't know how the record sold over there, but hopefully her recent success might help foster more collaboration with Neil in the future. Thus ends the long post. First off, I meant the comments lightly, but it's hard to read irony on the internet; I like Celine Dion, I just wish she didn't feel the need to oversing every song so much that she batters the poor tunes into submission. (I get the feeling early on that Columbia wanted to mold Shawn into that pop chanteuse mode, hence the overproduction on some of Fat City, i.e. the over-orchestrated I Don't Know Why. I'm genuinely interested, did anyone actually prefer the Fat City version to the one on Live '88/Live Tapes?) So I'm sorry, I tend to value restraint and intelligence in my singer/songwriters more than I do vocal histrionics. Second, Hanson; I like Hanson. I love that little girls have a band they can look eye to eye with, rather than up to. They're a pop band, pure and simple, and don't pretend to be anything but that. The music isn't for me but I appreciate their attitude 100,000 times more than someone like Marilyn Manson who's doin' the whole "Look at me, kids, I'm a Satanist, throw your mom and dad's hard earned suburban money at my cross-dressed ass." Lastly, just to bring this home since it is a Shawn Colvin website; working at the record store I expected a big upsurge in Shawn sales after the Grammy wins, but it sadly just didn't happen. Either everyone likely to buy already had or nobody watched the show, either way I'm disappointed. (I sold more AFSR my first week back in November than post-Grammy week.) Conversely the Dylan sales went way up. I can't figure it out.
