" IMO I couldn't agree more in this case as despite living in the UK the version of AFSR I grew used to didn't have 'What I Get Paid For' on it (it was an advance copy which presumably was based on the original artistic vision) and now whenever I hear the UK release I always feel that the song doesn't sit well on the record as for me it destroys the power of the 'original' body of songs - I can't really explain this well but its almost as if it shouldn't be there as I really don't like the song (I honestly believe it is the worst on the record) and it distracts from the power of the others on the record. To be fair, though, I feel that someone in Shawn's organisation must have OKed its inclusion on artistic merits as unusually for a 'bonus' song it neither sits at the beginning or end of the record but has been sequenced in the middle of it, thus some thought must have been given to its inclusion. Actually had they wanted a genuine bonus track, especially for the Japanese market which seems to like Christmas songs, then surely 'Wish You Were Here' would have been the logical choice as I guess it was recorded at the same time as AFSR. I have to agree that "What I Get Paid For" doesn't seem to fit in the ultimately upbeat tone of A Few Small Repairs... but I absolutely love that song. But then, I love Leonard Cohen's songs. They always cheer me up. I'm so glad it was put on the B-side of the U.S. single; I think it's the sort of song that all the chipper people who haven't quite thought through the lyrics of "Sunny" need to hear. Just wondering-- where in AFSR did they put "What I Get Paid For"? --Anna >Hi, >In small-repairs-digest V2 #61 Gwen and Jon Cummings say > >"As for tacking B-sides onto Shawn's ... if Shawn herself decided not to >include "What I Get Paid For" on AFSR for artistic reasons, then her >"vision" is compromised by foreign labels that tack it on. We don't all read the same papers and magazines, so I thought I would share this with you all. GRAMMYS' LATE BLOOM FOLK HERO by Lisa Robinson "A few years ago, singer-songwriter Shawn Colvin said, 'Frankly, the Grammy I won in 1990 (for best contemporary folk album) didn't do anything for my career. It looked good on paper, but I didn't sell any more records because of it.' That's likely to change now that the South Dakota native walked away with two top Grammys this week---Song of the Year and Record of the Year---for "Sunny Came Home," the Top 10 smash from her 1996 album "A Few Small Repairs." The album paired Colvin, 42, with co-writer, producer and former boyfriend John Leventhal, who also produced her 1990 Grammy-winning album "Steady On." Several months pregnant with her first child, Colvin, who performed on the Grammy show with her Lilith Fair cohorts Paula Cole and Sarah MacLachlan, lives with her husband Mario Erwin, out of the spotlight in Austin, Texas." Lisa Robinson: How do you feel about these Grammy wins? Shawn Covin: I'm totally blown away. I really wasn't expecting this. L.R. "You once told me that the Grammy you got in 1990 didn't make much of a difference. S.C. Well, the feelings that I described to you about when I won in 1990 really had more to do with my record company [not getting behind her album]. But basically, all of the other people in my categories this year certainly have gone platinum and I haven't yet (the album has sold 750,000 copies so far), so I appreciate that the recording academy has recognized me in this way. This record has done better than any of my previous ones, and as much as any award system has its problems---people get left out and none of it's perfect---I can't really help but personally be grateful for it, because I know its going to give me a shot in the arm. L.R. What feels different so far? S.C. Well, I really don't know. I do notice that at the Grammys, if you come out of nowhere and surprise everyone, it can make people stand up and take notice. L.R. Did the success of the Lilith Tour change things for women performers? S.C. I think it did a little bit, mainly because people realized that there was money to be made. Something was proven, which is that the power of women isn't a novelty. It's not like a beauty pageant; you don't have to have just one winner. You can put a bunch of them together and it'll still make money. That's got to be saying something to the industry. L.R. How did you feel competing at the Grammys with so many of the same women you performed with at the Lilith Fair? S.C. It's what the guys have done for years. And we're buddies and its kind of cool to see that we're in good company. I guess it would be hard if I didn't like the music that they make, but I have a lot of respect for all of the women that I worked with. It was a good tour, it was a lot of fun, it was real professionally done and I enjoyed everybody's performances. Some more and some less, but I was impressed by everyone. Anyway, I think the competitive aspect of it is normal. These are your colleagues and you should be competing against one another. It's healthy. L.R. Your album, "A Few Small Repairs," is about love gone wrong, but now you're happily married now. What happened to change things? S.C. I don't know. I don't think it was anything all that earth-shattering. It just took a long time for me to learn and do very basic things that perhaps I should have known before. It's mature kind of stuff that you end up learning over time. I just think I made a good decision. L.R. Wha't's the worst thing about being on the road for years? S.C. You start to forget about being social. Everything starts to just waste away. Every semblance of routine, family, social life is gone. It's all about where you're going to be next. Days of the week fall away. Birthdays, holidays fall away, seasons fall away. It's just about surviving on the road and I don't think it's good." So, she obviously has mixed feelings about jumping on the opportunity to keep up the momentum generated by her Grammy wins, and the desire to spend some time with her new husband.
