May I take this opportunity to apologise to everyone I promised a tape or a mini-disc of Shawn at Glasgow Arches. I've been pretty busy over the last few months and my tape deck, DAT and Mini Disc are all at different locations around London. Not only that, but our IT guy at work seemed to have a grudge and managed to delete nearly all of my mail folders from both my work and home PCs. Jean - I may have a problem with Telluride, but am still hoping to make it. If I can't, you must nominate either a friend or someone from the list and they've got a free 4 day ticket. I'll know late next week. Currently kicking myself after turning down a kind offer to go to NY for a few days to celebrate St Patricks Day, only to find out Shawn is playing in NY on one of those days. DOH!! Currently listening to : Incessant whingeing and moaning - Not on the CD...... I'm at work. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. For those [s-r] listers who had no idea what a dork I am, let this be a good example. Yesterday was a wonderful moment in the life of our beloved Shawn and as witness to this event, I have transcribed for you the honor Shawn Received before the Executive Session of the Austin City Council yesterday afternoon. Message from Mayor Kirk Watson before the City Council: "And now for some very very special music. We are very very excited to have with us today, Shawn Colvin. Tuesday January 6th, Austinite Shawn Colvin found herself nominated for 3 Grammy awards. Her hit record Sunny Came home from her gold album AFSR is contending for honors as record of the year, song of the year, and best female pop vocal performance. The same album was also nominated for 2 Grammys last year. In 1990, Shawn Colvin took home the best contemporary folk recording Grammy for her debut album Steady On. Shawn was born and raised in Vermillion, South Dakota and moved to Austin in 1994, and in 1995 she began working on her 4th album AFSR in her Lake Austin home. More recently Shawn has been involved in television. Her song Nothing On Me is the theme music for NBC's hit show Suddenly Susan starring Brook Shields. The producers were so enamoured with Shawn and her music, that they wrote her into an episode which aired on February 2nd. Shawn Colvin has toured with Neil Young, Richard Thompson, and Lyle Lovett and was featured in Lilith Fair tour last summer. Last October, Shawn married local Advertising Photographer Mario Erwin, and they are expecting their first child in August. We are very honored to have you here today. Everybody help me in welcoming Shawn Colvin. While we're giving her her Austin music pin, let me proclaim: Be it know by these present, that I, Kirk Watson, Mayor of the City of Austin Texas do hereby proclaim February 12th 1998 as Shawn Colvin Day in Austin. And call on all citizens to join me in recognizing the many outstanding contributions by the local music community for development of Austin's social, economic, and cultural diversity, and in recognizing the dedicated effort of artists which further Austin's status as the Live Music Capital of the World, signed by me, Kirk Watson, Mayor of the City of Austin. Ladies and Gentlemen, Shawn Colvin!" [I swear, Mama looks like she just woke up---pillowhead-- hair sticking every which way. (it's 2:00 in the afternoon), but she's cute as always. She is wearing an untucked, loose fitting, light and dark blue, kinda tie-dyed cotton sweatshirt and elephant- legged white pants.] A half asleep, bashful, very soft spoken Shawn: "Thank you very much. It's quite an honor. I'm gonna sing a song for you by Graham Parsons... it mentions South Carolina in the song--I dont know why he sang about South Carolina, he was from Georgia. I'm thinking about Austin as I sing this song It reminds me of the way that I feel about Austin... so I'll sing this for you now." Shawn sings "Hickory Wind." during applause, with a big cute smile, shawn takes off her guitar and stands it at her feet, gently rests her hands on the head of the guitar, and bashfully leans into the microphone: "Thank you very much I dont really have anything planned to say--I lived here in Austin in 1975 and 1976 and I fell in love with it then. I always wanted to come back. And as soon as I had a chance to get out of New York City and Los Angeles, umm.. (lowers voice) I did love New York although I didnt love Los Angeles, (audience giggles)... uh I did come back here just as soon as I could. and it's--it's a rare place for me that would honor me this way (touches her hand to her heart) and make me feel so at home, and I knew that when I came back here, and its appreciated more than you could know. I'd also like to pay my respects to the greatest radio station in the world, KGSR who's always made me feel really great (gentle smile, clears throat. kinda rocking on her feet from side to side like a little girl) and---and to all of you for giving me this honor----I love Austin, and I hope I can be here more often in the future to help out the community----I'm never home which is the irony of all this. We're looking forward to raising our child here. Thank you very very much." The End. So there you have it!! February 12 is Shawn Colvin Day! Just thought I'd share that with you. A day in the life of our dear and beloved Shawn. If you try to learn to play on a shit guitar, you're gonna sound like shit. We all start out on those and I think that's why so many people give up on playing, they never give themselves a chance to sound good and play well. I lucked into a really good acoustic guitar real early on because a girl who had a crush on me in high school sold me her guitar cheap when her musician boyfriend bought her a better one. Without that guitar to encourage me by bringing out the fact I could make some good noises I probably would've given up on playing and missed out the last 29 years. Alvarez acoustics are currently my favorite and I couldn't do without the one I now use for gigs, but I've played other Alvarez virtually identical to mine and it's just like somebody said online, even the same model of guitars play differently guitar to guitar, you just have to settle in and search for one you like. (ps. buy a tuner, they're cheap and they'll help you make better noises.) Grey Hair; like I said I'm 45, I've got a ton of them. But I still have tons of hair, unlike large segments of my graduating class encountered at my 25 year high school class reunion, so I figure I'm ahead of the game. Paul Westerberg; quite simply, Paul Westerberg is a god. The Replacements were the best band of the 80's bar none. (And don't even try to tell me about any of those English synth-pop simps. Please.) Austin Honoring Shawn; I've visited Austin for South by Southwest the last three Marches and it truly is like nowhere else on Earth for musicians. How many cities on this planet do you think would honor a musician in this way? The mayor of Columbus, Ohio wouldn't spit on a guitarist here if they sold a million records, in Austin Shawn is honored for just being Shawn. Yeah Mimi, I'm jealous. (Plus I bet it's warm there.) Okay, this has turned into more like a dime's worth than two cents, I better go. Ric ps. Things are still going well at the record store, I got full-time hours and medical benefits, I still sell tons of Shawn to unsuspecting but ultimately appreciative suburban shoppers and Loreena McKenitt is starting to sell through the roof due to airplay at our local so-called "modern rock" station (albeit in a rather suspect "remixed" form.) I'm co-hosting a local radio review show here this weekend and one of the advance CD's I got is the new Ani Difranco and I'm pretty happy to report she's belatedly and thankfully developed a sense of humor.
