Regarding the whole "call-vin" vs. "coal-vin" controversy, I agree with Katherine McLeod - let's just leave it at Shawn and be done with it. I kind of like the whole "one name" thing anyway - like Prince or Donovan or Oprah (I'll avoid naming Jewel) - it's kind of a symbol of greatness. While it is true that 20+ years ago her name *was* pronounced "coal-vin", it really doesn't matter now, does it? Personally, I smell a publicist's influence here. I'll see what I can find out. 3. Could Shawn's first name actually be Shanna? Maybe, but I don't think so. Her nicknames in high school were Sha-Na-Na (like the fifties tribute band) and Shanna (pronounced "shawna"). She wasn't particularly crazy about either of them and I'm pretty sure neither of them were officially sanctioned by her mother. ;^) 4. Shawn's natural hair color is brown. Well, this isn't exactly the same thing, but I thought I'd share anyway. My sister and I are javelin throwers, and in many individual sports, people tend to have certain superstitions. well, my sister always swore she wasn't superstitious, but for the last two or three years she's had a ritual before meets where she listens to Steady On and Diamond In The Rough before she throws. Well, last year I was injured so I didn't throw much, but I went to Indianapolis to watch her throw in Nationals, and when I went to pick her up at her hotel to take her to the track, she was running around the room, frantically throwing clothes and shoes up in the air and digging through bags. I thought she couldn't find her shoes or maybe the number she was supposed to put on her back. Or maybe the athletic tape that holds together her javelin boot which she refuses to replace, despite the fact that it is falling apart. Finally I asked, "What are you doing?" She answered with, "My tape...the tape. I can't find my tape." I said, "Here," and threw her a roll of athletic tape I found on the table. "No, my TAPE!" she said. "Steady On and Diamond in the Rough. MY TAPE." I started laughing. "You're not superstitious are you?" I asked. She was starting to get mad, and I could tell, so I knew i couldn't go far with it because she still had to compete and she doesn't throw well when in a bad mood. But I did let it go for a while before I told her I had the CD in the car and she could use my portable CD player. She was fine then, and actually did quite well in the meet, throwing near a personal best. Of course she had quite a few good luck charms along with her. Since I wasn't throwing, I had plenty of time on my hands and after seeing Shawn play at a free concert in austin where she signed something for my sister that said, "Kirsten, Good luck at nationals, Shawn Colvin" I decided to add to it. Not that Shawn's good luck wish wasn't good enough, but several people had told me to tell my sister good luck, so I just had them write down whatever they wanted to say and I stuck it in a little box and hand delivered it all to her. It contained good luck wishes from everyone from Shawn to John Jennings to the custodians at the indoor facility where we work out in the winter to the little kids across the street to the little kids in our older sister's preschool class (Our older sis is a preschool teacher) to the people who work at the convenience store by our apartment. My sister called it her "Box of Luck". Anyway, it turned out to be quite a good thing, and I didn't even think about it until Shawn signed that thing for Kirsten like that. Now it all goes with her to all her meets. Well, just thought I'd share. SOrry it was so long.
