Being that '97 was a year that I went to many concerts(no, I didn't total it up, but lets say over 30) I wanted to post my faves: Shawn at the Beacon Theatre-NYC-2-27-97 1st time seeing Patty Griffin live who opened for Shawn, even though she only played 5 songs you could tell she highly impressed the audience. What was really memorable about this Shawn concert was that John Leventhal was also playing with the band and I got to hear Window to the world, Richocet in Time and Witchita Skyline all in the same show. Mona Lisa was great with harmonica, Tennessee and Nothing on me really rocked. The 3 song acoustic set with just Shawn and John was stunning, he again did a great harmonica part on Beautiful Flower, Shawn fumbled a bit during Steady On and they had a good laugh about it. I could have just bawled during Shotgun down the avalanche...I don't think I've heard a better live version. I'll be back still has me reeling and what a way to end with Suicide Alley montage. Patty Griffin-Hamden CT 5-97 Even though I'd seen her live 2 weeks earlier I was more looking forward to this show and I wasn't disappointed. The venue was set in a beautiful barn from the 1800's. Patty just rocked out and played for over 90 minutes. I think she left her foot imprints in the wooden floorboards. Outstanding show. Patty Griffin Laura Love-Towne Crier Cafe-5-30-97 For those of you that saw her on Sessions on West 54th you know what I'm talking about. For those that didn't see it, she plays lively afro/celtic/vibe music as she prefers to call it. Even though she couldn't move around much at the studio, seeing her onstage is another matter, she's jumps around, sings and plays with a vengence. Her band is outstanding. I highly recommend seeing her if you can in '98 You won't be able to stop dancing. Laura Love Band Cliff Eberhardt-Bridgeport CT- 7-97 Cliff has always played with intensity whenever I've seen him, he was super funny here playing at the zoo. and the kids also loved him. Lyle Lovett and his band- Oakdale Theatre CT-7-5-97 What more can I say, his band is great, his songs are great, he knows how to sing and he's very charming. Shawn- Vanderbuilt Theatre NY- 7-22-97 The start of the "Trio" tour, Shawn chatted lots which was great, 1st time hearing "Viva Las Vegas" and "What I Get Paid For" It was very funny how she had to start Viva 3 times since she couldn't get the chords right after Larry started the song. Did a long discussion before Witchita about the Wizard of Oz/Pink Floyd comparison. Jonatha Brooke-Iron Horse Cafe MA-8-2-97 This was my 3rd time seeing her this year and 1st time seeing her play with her co-singer Ingrid Graudins. Their harmonies were heavenly. The acoustics at the IH are phenomenal. Jonatha played lots of new songs from her CD "10 Cent wings" which went over very well with the crowd. She's touring again in the spring with her full band and I highly suggest you don't miss her. Erica Wheeler- Turining Point NY-8-14-97 Erica writes touching, funny, sad songs. She's a very good storyteller and we all were laughing with her at her song/road stories She tours a lot out west, see her if you can. Erica Wheeler Sinead O'Connor- Beacon Theatre NY- 8-26-97 Need I say more? Her E.P. is one of my faves of 97. Her band rocked or played so tenderly you could hear a pin drop in the audience. AHHHH........THAT VOICE!! Sinéad O'Connor Jill Sobule-MA/9-97 & NY/11-97 Jill's an amazing songwriter/singer and comes up with lyrics no one is singing about these days. The pop songs are not bubblegum. Her CD's don't justify how great a live performer she is. A MUST SEE. Shawn Colvin- Paramount Theatre NYC-9-20-97 The "Trio" had a week off and Shawn was very chatty again and cursed quite a bit. It was amazing what the band did with the songs since I saw her in July. Mona Lisa was haunting, Stranded killed me. Viva Las Vegas Stuerat did an amazing solo while Shawn playfully "danced" around him. John Leventhal came by again to play on about 5 songs and they did a wonderful acoustic Cry like an angel and Climb On a back that's strong. I finally got to meet her! Yipee!! Jane Siberry- Turning Point NY-9-3-97 My 2nd time seeing her, her songs/voice are outstanding. Sad to hear she's having label problems. Jane Siberry Dan Bern-Turning Point NY 9-18-97 I don't think I've laughed so hard a concert since seeing Cheryl Wheeler or Erica Wheeler. He comes up with original songs on current topics. He may sound like Bob Dylan to some but he's got his own unique perspective. Dan Bern Homepage Bruce Cockburn-Tarrytown NY/11-14-97 He has almost 22 CD's out, hadn't seen him live since 95 and what a guitar player/songwriter he is. Patty Larkin Stamford CT 11-16-97 Patty had a cold but she kicked major butt singing and playing. Her '97 CD "Perishible Fruit" is worth checking out. Shows I missed in '97 or that I hope to catch in '98 David Byrne Paula Cole (Jean are you coming to Toad's on Feb 19th?) Gerry, just curious how a New Yorker, like yourself (at least from what I've deduced), is going to swing the logistics of a Telluride trip. Have you been there before? Camping or lodging? Driving or flying? How long have you had this planned? I'd love to go to this, but I'd have to do it on the cheap which requires some reconnaissance. Or maybe I'm not spontaneous enough. - -- Greg Welker welkerg@uakron.edu CBA Computer Labs The University of Akron - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. To be honest, I've no idea where I got that from and I'm starting to really doubt it - I thought I read it somewhere, like maybe in one of the articles on the Sony site, but after much fruitless searching there (and the rest of the web!) I'm damned if I can find it anywhere! Hmmmm.... must've dreamt it :) Still sounds quite reasonable though, doesn't it? Shawn Louise.... I like it ;) Although I hate having a question with no answer.... where are ya Darwin? Put us out of our misery! >So, your car's name is Louise. Yep - my last car was Thelma... so... you know ;) I think Babylon Correctional Facilty wins hands down though, in the car name contest. Anna & Lindsey - you guys crack me up ;) kat :) (p.s. update on the sydney harbour bridge cheesy nye grin, which i can't stop raving about even tho i hated it - apparently its now being hailed as a priceless icon, an image forever linked to the bridge, and is up for sale..... sigh..... someone please buy it and take it away!) ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. The only one we were at together was Shawn at the Vanderbilt Club on Long Island. I also saw her and Meridith Brooks at a micro-brewery in Jericho, L.I. sponsored by WHTZ earlier in the year. That was neat. About 100 people there and I was 5 feet from the "stage" sitting on the floor. She sang 5 songs, including "Sunny" which was live on the air. If I had something for her to sign I would have gotten on line to meet her. I did get to talk to Meredith Brooks. You mentioned that you were at the Turning Point in Westchester. Did you happen to see Jim Dawson there? He's a singer-song writer who was popular in the '70's who is still hanging in there trying to get his music heard. I have many of his albums and a new CD he released in Europe. Just curious. Do you know what John Leventhal does other than collaborate with Shawn? Although each act only played for about forty minutes, it was still great! What a show! I'm hoping this summer will be just as good. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. John Leventhal, in addition to being married to the lovely, very talented Rosanne Cash has also produced some of her CD's as well as Patty Larkin's and Kelly Willis's. I'm sure he's worked on lots of others, from a radio interview Rosanne did she said "he's a very busy boy" Gerry - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. I've wanted to go to CO for a few years and after reading many of the reviews from last year's festival, Jean (BIGHAIR) has been a big influence in getting me to purchase tickets.(THANKS JENA =) Hopefully I'll know about lodging soon(knock wood). If not, there's always the camping option. I also want to mention another show fave from 97 which was seeing Shawn at Toad's in CT in September where I finally got to meet the famous SteadyOnDC Denise! YAY. The concert was great too...lol.....Hope you can come to Telluride Denise!
