I love Loreena McK. for rainy autumn Sunday mornings but I wouldn't wanna use her as a substitute for White Castle coffee and amphetamines. Ricki C.'s driving picks; El Corazon / Steve Earle (also might not be a bad idea to pick up the essential Steve Earle compilation disc, but be forewarned, you will break speed laws listening to these in the car. anything by Marshall Crenshaw In Your Bright Ray / Grant McLennan Rumor & Sigh / Richard Thompson Rear View Mirror / Townes Van Zandt (for the winding down/coming back part of the drive, save it for 50 miles from home.) ps. I wasn't aware anyone still read Spin magazine. I gave it up years ago after their "We're a generation of misanthropes and we're damn proud of wallowing in our misery." editorial policy got the best of me. If you really want a good rock & roll read try Mojo magazine from England. I would think any good bookstore in your area would carry it, if we can get it in Columbus, Ohio I would think you could get it anywhere. Great writing, wide range of music coverage, historical perspective, and a killer sense of humor; qualities I find sadly lacking in U.S. publications. Enjoy your drive. HO! HO! HO! Marsha from Chattanooga here. Shawn did a wonderful performance of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" or is it called "The Christmas Song"?...a few minutes ago on Good Morning America, sans guitar with a piano accompanist and traditional bass. Lovely! As early AM as it began for her (she arrived at the studio at 5:30), her voice was in the best live shape I have heard on TV. Good thing, too, because it was the type of sound with which you could hear every bubble and squeak. None came from her, only beautiful sounds to do justice to one of my all-time favorite songs. She was dressed in a grey boa over her clingy black top tucked into black leather pants. This song of hers can be heard on her label's compilation of Christmas Songs (Sony I assume), which I will check out. In her interview prior to singing, she voiced appreciation to her fans as well as the AAA radio play she has received through the years prior to her recent breakthrough on pop stations. Great Shawn moment...making it worth the early rise for this night owl, honey! For those who don't yet own this 1990 compilation, its title is "Acoustic Christmas" (Columbia #CK 46880) and also features offerings from Rosanne Cash, Harry Connick Jr., Judy Collins, Poi Dog Pondering (a personal favorite), the late Laura Nyro and many others. Be doubly warned - this is totally true! (speaking from experience). I bought the essential Steve Earle a while back, and have been driving like a maniac since when listening to it in the car... well.. more than normal ;) BUT, the good thing (?) is... you'll have it up so darn loud, ya won't even hear the sirens! (aren't you all glad you don't live anywhere near sydney?!) Moving on... some of my other faves bought this year (in no particular order and besides the obvious shawn) are: 1. Patty Griffin - Living With Ghosts 2. Robyne Dunn - Spindrift 3. Once Blue 4. Sarah McLachlan - Fumbling Towards Ecstasy 5. Chapin - Stones in the Road There's also the Charlie Sexton Sextet's Under the Wishing Tree, which i actually bought last year, but it's still great driving music. There's probably a heap of others I can't think of right now, and many of which have been inspired by people on this list (you all know who you are!). Many seasonal greetings and all that jazz to everyone... Kat :) ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. I have to say that I really really like Tom Cochrane's "Songs of a Circling Spirit". The songs are acoustic versions of his stuff, it's like he made his own Unplugged album. I liked his stuff but I never bought any of his albums but this album is one of my top picks, possibly #2. I don't know if it is availible internationally, if it is you should try it, think of it as a "brother album" to Sarah's. Carolyn Arends is pretty cool too. Shawn on TNT: UNICEF Benefit If you didn't catch shawn on TNT last nite... you missed quite a gig! Shawn rocked the house with "Sunny Came Home" with Levanthal and Kate Markowitz by her side... The shawn-meister strutted her stuff for all to see! For the fashion conscious, shawn wore a sleek black outfit; spandex pants with just a hint of bell bottoms at the ankles, heavy black boots, and a black top that was on the verge of Biker Chick apparel. She looked good. And she looked happy. The Sunny performance was the usual rendition; Kate Markowitz did a great job as always on backup vocals while John L. maintained his "I-mean- business" face. shawn's voice was right on. To be honest, i had sort of hoped for Diamond In the Rough (bcz of the reference to a child) or even Nothin On Me so that non-shawn worshippers and mainstream americans would know that she does have more than one song in her repertoire .. thankfullly, she proved that later! Later on, after a couple of performances -- (and, yes, an Elmo performance...as in Sesame Street…. ooh boy...but I will not make fun of Elmo since shawn will be performing in ElmoPalooza quite soon….) shawn came out and introduced Mary Chapin Carpenter. She beamed with pride for her friend... it was great to see. Chapin did a great song... Keeping the Faith (?) i think was the title. then... my secret wish came true... Shawn came back out on stage... to do a duet! YAY! Would it be One Cool Remove? Would it be Four Seasons In One Day? Even better... it was Lefty Frizzel's That's the Way Love Goes. Woo! Hoo! (hey Kat -- Ctrl-G!!!!!) The lights came down with only a spotlight on them... just shawn on her trusty Martin D-28 and their voices filling the Beacon Theater. Wow. again i say, Wow. It was pretty dang awesome. (Of course, now i am REALLY REALLY excited about Telluride... can you say, "six-months of INSOMNIA?") It almost seemed that it was a last- minute decision to do the duet... that perhaps Chapin cut her song short to allow time for the duet... i could be wrong, but that is how it seemed. At any rate.. for anyone that missed this performance, they will probably rebroadcast it soon.. but i will be glad to tape it for those who want it... audio or video…. i had taped the whole concert, but a good bit of it was kinda blah... so I only kept the shawn parts. (Oh, and about Elmo...it kinda depressed me that he can dance and dress better than i can!!! sheesh! ) Shawn on GMA: Wow. man….. just Wow! GMA did a good job with the interview before hand…. Charlie always seems to do quite well…. But the lady who took Joan Lunden’s place was terrific! No goofy I-Don’t-Know-Who-The-Heck-You-Are-But- will-Ask- you-Sumthin-Stupid-Anyway questions. Instead, there were well-informed comments on AAA radio and Austin singer-songwriters! Thank goodness Joan wasn’t there! Shawn sed of the hostess, "Ah!! Radiospeak!" she was pleased. The Outfit: shiny black leather pants…. Black top…. And a gray feather boa…. I’m still trying to make up my mind about that choice….it scared me…. ;) AND it drew a comment from charlie! The Performance: A very very very good performance. Bad acoustics could have ruined this appearance, but instead, shawn hit every note. There was one voice crack, but even that sounded good! (hehheh.. I’m blinded and in hero worship mode methinks!) Seriously, it was great. I chuckled that shawn was on a stool without her trusty guitar…. And it seemed as if she did not know what to do with her hands!! LOL! Same piano and bass players from the night before.. their names escape me. It was the same arrangement of Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas that appears on the Acoustic Christmas CD from a coupla years back. But now you can find it on a just released compilation disc apparently of Sony artists called Sounds of the Season. I assume it is the same recording…. Get thee to a record store and get it if you have not heard shawn do this song. Yay for shawn….. two AWESOME appearances in two days. Wow. EGADS that was long….the [s-r] post from Hell....Okay, I am done! (No, Kat, Sara and Shell…. I haven’t packed yet….) ~jean PS: ======warning!!! NSC-NSC-NSC-NSC!!! Enya on Letterman:=========== Okay... so i LUV enya... have all her CDs... couldn't live without them... even though, admittedly, they all sound a lot alike... Curiosity got the best of me and i just HAD to see how she was going to perform on Letterman! There she was, seated at a grand piano/synthesizer gizmo, surrounded onstage by woman backup singers and a string ensemble dressed in velour gowns, and a lone dude on tympani drums in the back. (Forgive my lack of technical terminology...hehheh...) To be totally honest, it sounded kinda canned... sort of Milli Vanilli if ya know what i mean... but ya know what? The song was so uplifting and rich and full and just so doggone happy that i really really liked it. Enya had this big smile plastered on her face... you just couldn't help but smile back. (hmmm.. that sort of sounds psycho...watching Letterman by yourself with a maniacal grin...yikes!) So you fellow True Blue enya fans will enjoy the new song... but everyone else will probably think, "Been there... done that." I, of course, loved it. Now I am really done. ~jean now playing: Nothing Like The Sun - Sting Not a Pretty Girl - ani difranco Steady On - Shawn October Project - self titled (sara….
