I've just come on the list. I first heard Shawn on KCRW, bless them -- Santa Monica College PBS station. /Steady On/. Listened to that album constantly, got it just when I first went to Hawaii. So despite all the angst, the album returns me to the tropics a bit whenever I hear it. I've been fortunate enough to see her several times at the Coach House in San Juan Capo, and hope to have more chances in future. In any event, Adam Legge was wondering about a winter song compilation. I'd suggest adding /Song for a Winter's Night/, performed either by Sarah McLachlan or the author, Gordon Lightfoot. A warm, seasonal song that should fit in nicely. Cheers -- . . Nah, not really. I found a site that will be of great interest to all Paula Cole fans. (Also Emmylou, Finn Brothers, PJ Harvey, Ricki LJ, kd, Beth Orton and many more) http://www.liveconcerts.com/listening/kcrw/ Choose the artist from the pull down menu and listen to them interviewed and singing live in the studio. You need Real Audio, but it's worth the download. Currently listening to Emmylou and Daniel Lanois from the site. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. This was an idea which I thought of after being on a Heart list last year, and several members pooled their own stuff to make a compilation tape for the list. Based on Sony's loss of interest in Shawn (at least over here in the UK), I think we should do something for ourselves. If anyone feels bad about loss of income to Shawn, copyright etc., then maybe people could make donations to a known favourite charity of Shawn's. I know legality is a difficult area for some (and in a strict sense it's a concern for all music lovers), but it often pisses me off to think of all the video footage sitting in record companies' vaults that probably won't be looked at ever again! Anyway, a few people e-mailed me showing some interest, so does anyone else out there think this is a good idea? If so, please e-mail me (if you'd rather not mail the list publically) and let's do this! Cheers Andrew Happy thoughts! I attended last year's festival and it was a blast! I've seen Shawn live 4 times, and her appearance at Telluride was wonderful. Believe it or not, her concert wasn't even the best part. On Sunday afternoon, Jim Lauderdale hosted a songwriter's workshop in Elks Park, featuring Shawn, Mary Chapin Carpenter and John Jennings. What a treat. They all talked a little about songwriting, reminisced and did a round robin performing songs for about an hour. Totally cool. Plus Shawn joined both Chapin and Lyle Lovett onstage during their shows and they reciprocated for her show. My best advice is get ahold of those $100 passes if you can. The festival sold out last year and there were alot of unhappy people who travelled long distances to find they couldn't get tickets at the last minute. I don't doubt it will sell out again this year, especially since it is the 25th anniversary. I bought my tickets in May ($40/day on Sat/Sun), but the 4 day pass is the best deal. As far as lodging, sign up early for that too, especially if you want to get a condo or hotel (be prepared to pay top dollar, though). The town park camp site is nothing more than a big open field where they jam as many people as possible. I stayed a the Ilium campground which is about 3 miles from the town. This area was alot less crowded and provided some wonderful scenery. Hopefully they'll be using it again. They had buses running to the campsite and back which was nice, but sometimes the wait was pretty long because the buses filled up rapidly (especially at the end of the final concert for the night). These were school buses, mind you, so be ready to be bounced around. I'd recommend taking a mountain bike if you can, because there is a bike path that runs into town (the road out of the campground is not paved, though, so road bikes won't work very well.) They also promised showers at the campsite last year but there were none. The local high school offered showers from like 6am to 1 pm. They charged some nominal fee, like a buck or something. Believe me, you'll pay just about anything after a couple of days without a shower and the only other option being bathing in a really cold stream. Bring your camera--photo ops are abundant. Also, bring lots of sunscreen, a chair or blanket to sit on, and plenty of clothes. During the day, it was mid to upper 70's but got down into the 40's at night. If the weather holds out, you'll be in shorts during the day, but totally bundled up at night. People were lining up the night before next day shows to scout a place to sit, so if you want to get a great place, plan on getting there early. Since it was just me and a couple of friends, we just took our chances and were always able to get a pretty good view. They have lots of food and drink on the festival grounds, but won't allow you to bring in alcoholic beverages. Bring a water bottle-they have water stations (i.e. garden hoses) all over the festival grounds. The town of Telluride has some wonderful restaurants and bars as well. Bottom line--go if you can! You won't be disappointed. Check the Planet Bluegrass website that Jean mentioned-they have all the info and are very helpful. Dudes!!!!!!! Just got back from seein Shawn at the 8-0 in Dallas. Wooooohooooooo!! Omg you guys.... poor Shawn. The set-up sucked - they moved the deal outside at the last minute cause a million people showed up, but the monitors were feeding back the whole time and the Dallas Quadrangle (where the 8-0 is) is conveniently situated right below the flight path for Love Field! About 20 planes took off during her set and she was so good about it. It got to the point where she would just see the plane comin and do an instrumental break - the crowd was crackin up. But of course, in spite of all the distractions, Shawn rocked, as usual. I was surprised by the crowd... it was a Mix station-sponsored show... a free one no less(!)... so I expected lots of teeny-bopper "Sunny fans." But that just wasn't the case. Of course the songs from A Few Small Repairs got the biggest applause and the sing-along action... but there were lots of hard-core Shawn fans there too. When she asked what we wanted to hear, the first thing someone shouted out was "Shotgun down the Avalanche" and there were also lots of votes for "Diamond in the Rough." The biggest thing that struck me about this show was how totally cool Shawn is... Of course, we all know that, but tonight it was just even more obvious. She came out looking tired and a little nervous... she wasn't clicking with the crowd at first. The monitor feedback got her at the very beginning and she actually almost forgot a line in her first song. But after she played a couple she settled down and was cracking jokes all night... I was laughin so hard. For instance... she intro'd The Facts About Jimmy by saying... "Okay, I'm gonna do the song that best follows Get Out of This House... It's a song about a big asshole." Later, after she played Sunny Came Home, she said she was thinking about re-doing it for the X-Files and changing it to "Scully Came Home" and she actually sang the line that way. Heh heh.... When she played "Nothin On Me" she mentioned that it was the new theme song for Suddenly Susan and she said "You guys... because that's the new theme song, I have to shoot a video with Brooke Shields. I've given it some thought, and I think we just need to be naked. I'm pretty savvy about this business now since I've been at it for awhile and I just think it would be good for my career at this point to be naked with Brooke Shields." LOL... Shawn!! I love it. "Nothin On Me" hehehe... (as the BigHAIRed One would say....) "BAH!!" :) Okeee... here's the set list. Interesting.... veeeeerrrrrrry interesting. :) Twilight (first time I've heard her play this live... yummmmmmm) Another Long One Get Out of This House The Facts About Jimmy -- the best I've *ever* heard her do this... WOW. And again I say... WOW. Climb On (a Back that's Strong) (Shawn mentioned that this was once featured on Baywatch... hehehe.) :) Shotgun Down the Avalanche -- simply mesmerizing :) :) :) You and the Mona Lisa Nothin' On Me Sunny Came Home I Don't Know Why Diamond in the Rough Encore: Round of Blues YAY!! A good show in spite of bad circumstances... that's our Shawn!! :) ~Janel~ - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body.
