Shawn and Lucy go back to= their days in Greenwich Village in New York City. Shawn produced Lucy's= first album, The Tide, and contributes many backing vocals and guitar to= the recording. Lucy released a second disc last year, Flesh and Bone. Lucy and her= husband, Rick Litvin, wrote most of the songs on this effort and they are= very talented writers. Both discs are critically acclaimed and I encourage= you all to get these recordings, if you don't have them. Lucy is certainly= not a Shawn clone; she is an extremely talented artist in her own right. = With that said, if you like Shawn (if you don't, why are you on this= list??), there is a very strong chance you will connect with Lucy's music,= as well. Last weekend, I saw Lucy perform. I actually saw her twice, once on Friday= (this review) and again on Sunday evening in Monterey, at Morgan's Coffee= and Tea. She seemed very surprised and shocked to see us there when she= recognized me. It is something she should get used to, if she gets the= recognition her talent deserves. This was another great performance, with= a slightly different setlist, and two encores! It was a crazy, 950 mile= roadtrip weekend, but well worth it. The venue was interesting, to say the least. The Palms Playhouse is an= institution in Davis, which is a college town about twenty five miles from= Sacramento. It is a converted barn of undetermined age that has served as= a playhouse and music venue for 25 years, capacity is approximately 75, and= seating is extremely intimate. I was in the front row, stage left, about= two feet from the piano and five feet from the microphone. =20 Lucy started the show with a song by Richard Buckner, called Rain Squall, in= honor of El Nino, then played an as yet untitled song (I call it Lonely= Nights) which was excellent. This was the beginning of one of the most= wonderful musical experiences I've ever had. =20 "This is a very special night for me, my parents are here", Lucy told us. = They weren't too difficult to pick out, given the 30-40-ish crowd. Looking= around at the surroundings, Lucy dubbed it The Love Shack. She then told a= story about picking up a guy at a bar she was playing in New York City, who= would eventually become her husband, and the inspiration for the song, Ten= Year Night. She told her parents that the part of the song about the= kitchen floor was only there because it rhymed=85 This received a big= laugh. She then did an outstanding, A Cappella version of a Cliff= Eberhardt song called Drive. Given my proximity to her, I was continually amazed at how expressive Lucy= is when she sings. It was great to just watch her perform, as well as hear= her. She is emotionally connected to each of the songs she sings, she is= telling us about herself and her observations on life and relationships. = It was easy to tell that this was a special night, not just for Lucy and= her parents, but for everyone in the room. She was really on. Lucy, like Shawn, has a lot of energy and a great personality. She enjoys= sharing stories and banters with the crowd between songs. She told a long,= sweet, funny story about being hopelessly infatuated with Al Pacino in the= movie Serpico. The long hair, beard, earring, and he was a sensitive guy. = This lasted for about five years, starting when she was thirteen. She= would stare at the poster from the movie that was over her bed, and she= would be filled with a feeling of despair and misery, because she knew she= would never have this man. She recently saw the movie at a friend's house;= it had been fifteen years or more since she had seen it. She was wondering= how she would feel about now that she was older and happily married. She= felt the same feelings of despair and misery=85 This led to the song,= Guinevere, which is inspired by the unrequited love of Al Pacino. =20 Lucy told us about touring England and Scotland recently. When she was in= Liverpool, she visited the Cavern Club to pay homage to The Beatles. She= had her picture taken next to a street sign on Penny Lane, like any good= tourist. She visited a giant music store, HMV, and was distressed when she= couldn't find her CD in the store's Folk section. She introduced herself= to a manager at the store and he informed her that her recordings were= indeed in stock, but in the country section. She hadn't thought of herself= that way (not that there's anything wrong with that!) and was pretty amused= that someone named Lucy Kaplansky would show up in the country section,= right next to Garth Brooks. She was able to catch a show at a club where a= local band was playing country music, which was very exotic. =20 Armed with this new information about how she was being marketed in England,= she set out to write a country song, which resulted in the song, The End of= the Day. It's a Lucy Kaplansky song though, not really a country song. During the break, I had a chance to chat with Lucy's Mom, who is a wonderful= lady. =20 We really got to see how special this night was during the second set when= Lucy had her father come up and play piano for a couple of songs. These= weren't just any songs, but songs her father had written years ago. Mr. K.= is a mathematician who celebrated his 80th birthday earlier in the year. = He has been writing songs for fun for more than sixty years; many of them= based on math and science. Legend has it that he used to play piano in a= silent movie house in Toronto when he was eight. The two songs he played= and Lucy sang were "A Song About Pi" and "On an Asteroid with You", which= he wrote in 1951 on his honeymoon, Lucy wondered why he had all that spare= time=85 (A great line in this song: "You'll look so cute in your little= space suit"). This was such a warm and spontaneous moment; it was like= being in the Kaplansky living room. This got a standing ovation, and Lucy= had to pause a few moments to regain her composure and figure how she going= to follow that. She did get quickly back on track and dazzled us with a= few more songs. The last song of the set was a Gram Parsons song, The= Return of the Grievous Angel. Lucy explained that when she left music= behind to return to school, she completely gave it up for a number of years= and dedicated herself to her studies and her new profession. Then when she= picked up the guitar again and started singing, it hit her like a= locomotive how much she had missed it, and this song was and is one of her= favorites and reminds her of the happiness and joy of music. For the encore, she performed the song Still Life. This is an incredibly= powerful and moving song about confronting your fears. Lucy told us that= this song came out of the process of deciding to leave her profession of= Psychotherapy and return to music. It was one of those rare moments in= music, when everyone fell completely silent, totally caught up in the song= and the artist. As she finished the song and looked up, there was a pause= of a few seconds while everyone kind of blinked and said wow to themselves,= then came the richly deserved applause. I'll carry that moment with me= forever. My music teacher gave me the following quote over twenty years ago, trying= to focus me on playing with my heart: It is a rare and wonderful thing to hear the work of an artist who has the= ability and skill to portray their experiences in such a way that we are= moved to say, "Yeah, I've felt that way too." I have always believed that quote applied to Shawn Colvin. Lucy Kaplansky= will make you feel that way, too. After seeing this show, I got to meet Lucy and we talked for a few minutes,= she is a really nice, warm, friendly person, very down to earth. Check out her website and go see her perform, she is very special. http://www.pair.com/lucy/ Setlist: 1. Rain Squall 2. Untitled (Lonely Nights) 3. Ten Year Night 4. Scorpion 5.
