The theater was a third to a half empty, a about half of those there were young. I'd say about a half of the people there were there only for Sunny (I say this because of the behaviour of certain people around me). Shawn didn't seemed particularly pleased with the audience. She did the usual banter, at times, when people would yell things out, but when they wouldn't repeat their comments legibally, she seemed to get pissed, saying, "I think I'm getting heckled." In fact, there was a noticable lack of story telling by Shawn. There was the Lyle Lovett story after Mona Lisa...the same one that she's told on at least the last three tours (going back as far, at least, as last March). [Side note: Someone asked about this story, so in a nut-shell. There is a prevelent feeling in the industry that writing a song about your child is pathetic. Last Christmas she was doing a radio show in Austin. While waiting to go on, she was hanging out with fellow preformer, Lyle Lovett. While waiting, they were listening to whoever it was performing (has she ever named the singer?) who was singing a "beautiful, deep, moving song" about his kid. Lyle turns to Shawn (Shawn here makes fun of Lyle's lack of expressivness) and says in an impression of his vioce, "If you ever have a kid, don't write a fucking song about it!" Shawn was too afraid to tell him that Mona Lisa was written for her niece.] After Trouble, she made a joke about her voice -- it's a bit out of practice 'cause on her honeymoon, she didn't spend her time singing. This was followed by a discussion of what's on Spectravision. She really went off on Demi Moore and GI Jane. When she messed up on Steady On, she said she had started to think about the movie and just couldn't concentrate. It was during that discussion that people started yelling out things she couldn't make out, she'd ask for a clarification, and they'd shut up. It did almost seem like she was being heckled. There really wasn't any more talking, except when she came out for the encore: I had yelled for Orion, and several other people had taken up the cheer (hell, this is my seventh time singing her, I deserve to hear the damn song at least once) and she seemed to be listening. Several other songs were also requested, including one person with a powerful voice asking for 4 Seasons in 1 Day, and he won. Saying that we wanted "all of the suicide songs" (whatever that means) she spoke about Crowded House, Neil Finn, New Zeland, and then sang the song. I really thought we were going to get Orion. The audience was, again, terrible. There was talking through-out, and people really didn't seem to want to listen to the music. As I said, I think most were there to hear Sunny, knew none of the other songs, didn't care about the other songs, and don't care for accustic shows. Which raises the obvious question: What were they doing there? Having seen Shawn alone, with a band, and with the trio, I have to think that she has the best chance of reaching these people during the full band shows. There's more energy, she can joke around with the guys, and there's more to hold limited attentions. I've never had the experience of having one of my musicians suddenly become big with the "teeny-boppers." I'm not sure that I like it. Before two years ago, I hated it when she, and others I like, played over 21 clubs. But now that I'm legal and now that all of thse people aren't, let's play the bars! Anyway,(for those interested) Shawn wore dark cordory pants and a dark blouse. The pants sort of bell-bottomed out around those weird shoes (boots?) that she wore this summer -- the ones that looked like they were from the sixties or seventies. Short brownish hair and a ring with a huge stone on it. The set was sparse: a mic, Shawn, and a wooden stool behind her. I was hoping there might be a harmonica on it, but no luck. There was a bottle of Evian water that she drank about half of. And now for the weird part: I usually try to get some sort of reminder at concerts -- usually the play list taped to the floor in front of the performers (I have 2 from Shawn, 1 from Dylan, Freedy, Joan Baez, etc), but there was no play list. So as I went to the front of the stage, I really didn't see anything...not even an extra pick. Well, there was one thing. When the roady came over to take down the mic, I went, well, a little bit wacko. And so I asked him for Shawn's half-empty water bottle. You should have seen the look on his face. Well actually, its probably the same look on all of your faces right now. But, he gave me the bottle. Now my thought, was that Shawn often talks to fans on her way out of the venue, so I figured "wouldn't it be cool to have her sign the water bottle?" Of course, she (according to the equipment guy) she walked off the stage and directly into the waiting car. So now I have a half empty bottle of Evian (and no actually proof that it was Shawn's -- but it was, I promise). [Someone posted after Columbus that she wasn't wearing make-up, and there is no lip-stick on the bottle, so I guess he was right.] Anyway, with the painter guy having been run off the list, I think this may make be the leading freak. I'm really worried about me behaviour on this one, I hope this isn't the first sign of becoming a stalker.
