The ticket is sixth row, dead center. [Actually, as I look at the tickets now, I see that they say row "b," but when I bought them the ticket-lady, said sixth row...either way, good seats down front, I guess.] I'm asking face value -- $20. No auction or anything. First person to email me gets it (please include a phone number, so we can work out the arrangments). I hope this gets posted in time. If I don't hear from anyone by Sat. mid-afternoon, I guess I'll try to scalp at the door. Just thought I'd my fellow "hard-core" fans first crack. Sam >> Man!! If figures I have to work this Saturday!! I would have been willing to drive out to Indiana (I live near Washington DC) to see this show with such a GREAT seat!! Oh well, maybe next lifetime!! Thanks for the offer!! But not anymore. Walking out to the welcoming applause pretty promptly at 8:05 Shawn wore a nicely tailored pantsuit, no makeup (something I, being a guy, probably wouldn't have noticed but which my girlfriend Sharon pointed out at the onset), and sporting a short natural brown she didn't have the time or inclination to wash hairdo. I'm not being derogatory, I happen to think Shawn Colvin is one of the most truly lovely women I've ever seen, but it was striking how tired and yes, drawn, she looked. However, once she picked up her guitar all that just floated away. I've seen Shawn solo acoustic before but only in opening slots (once with Richard Thompson '92, twice with Jackson Browne summer '96), never headlining, and her close to 90 minute show was one of the most varied and interesting solo acoustic sets I've ever seen. (Richard Thompson himself and maybe Elliott Murphy being the other people I've seen come close.) Shawn commented early in the show how strange it was to be touring solo again, saying, "I've only been playing with a trio lately, but even that seems like a lot of people when you're out here all alone." It was a good Shawn crowd, people were warm and into it, there seemed to be few or no "Sunny Came Home" late arrivistes (not that I care who comes just so Shawn fills the seats and we get future shows). Reading this over I realize I've said very little about the actual show: it was lovely, it had power and intelligence, it had warmth, the guitar playing was absolutely dead on the money, the singing was all sides of Shawn; from just beautiful on "You & the Mona Lisa", to edgy and menacing on "the Facts About Jimmy", to aching on "I Want It Back", to playful on "Nothin' On Me." In other words the show was everything I love about Shawn Colvin. I might think of more to add later but that's the story for now. SET LIST Twilight Another Long One Get Out of This House the Facts About Jimmy You and the Mona Lisa Polaroids Trouble Wichita Skyline Everything Little Thing He Does is Magic I Want It Back Steady On Nothin' On Me Sunny Came Home Round of Blues encores If These Walls Could Talk Killing the Blues Diamonds In the Rough sidelights; no opening act at least on this stop of the tour, get there on time; as a musician something I found strange, Shawn brought one guitar only, seemed to be functioning without roadies, I'm wondering how she's going to deal with broken strings or technical problems throughout the tour (I admit I worry too much about that kind of thing but even I bring a spare guitar to the crummy little gigs I play); great Lyle Lovett story in the set after You and the Mona Lisa; nice story about Shawn wanting her and Brooke Shields to appear naked in the upcoming Nothin' On Me video in order to live up to the title. high points of set for me; Trouble, If These Walls Could Speak, I Want It Back low point of set; no piano onstage so no chance of If I Were Brave biggest surprise of set; a version of Everything Little He Does Is Magic that actually worked, I think that may be my least favorite song Shawn performance on record I realize this way too long, I'm sorry. He kept on singing while completely replacing the string. Never stopped. Never broke stride. Shawn has frequently toured solo with just one guitar and no techs. I'm sure if there are any problems, she can handle them. susan (who missed Shawn a couple of times this year because of travelling and wants her to return to the bay area soon!)
