Please, Sarah, get a grip! ;^) I wouldn't say that Shawn was any more rebellious than the rest of us in those days (actually, I was the one who only showed up for classes to take the tests). You must remember, however, that we were living in a college town in the early 70s - so rallies, sit-ins, and other forms of non-violent protest (as well as the drugs that went with them) were pretty commonplace to all of us. While Shawn was most definitely NOT a nerd, she was somewhat hyper-intelligent (in a good way) and completed high school in three years. I was also involved in that same accelerated graduation program but ended up having to put in the full four years to make up a bloody (don't get me started) P.E. credit! We were both members of the "artsy-fartsy"" crowd (Carbondale Community High School had received quite a lot of government grants at that time to fund arts education) and although we were both relegated to the chorus of the spring musical production our freshman year, Shawn went on to play the lead the following two years in "The King and I" and "My Fair Lady" as well as filling the role of the title character in one of our dramatic productions, "Tell Me That You Love Me, Junie Moon". She's really quite the actress, and I'm amazed that someone at Sony/Columbia hasn't thought of exploiting that aspect of her talents as yet. BTW, one of my spare time projects lately (I run an audio post-production house) has been compiling bits and pieces of the two cast albums we recorded for "King" and "Lady" into a sort of "Best Of" CD. I'm doing it primarily for myself, but there's probably a few other CCHS alumni who would be interested in such silliness... The last time I got to speak to Shawn personally (which was unfortunately some three years ago when she played a benefit concert locally) it seemed that her fondest memories of that time agree with mine: the "parties where we played stump the band" (extended jam sessions featuring as many as seven acoustic guitarists and up to eight part harmony) that she mentions in the lyrics to "Cry Like An Angel", her early duet performances with Julie Phillips and later Joanne Pappellis (both of whom have, like myself, returned to live in Carbondale), and a general feeling of unity that we haven't really experienced since then. "We were raising each other in a strange land" and, damnit, I think we did a pretty good job! ;^) And that's quite enough "strolling down memory lane" for now... =09 =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D Darwin Stearns =20 e-mail: darwin@geocities.com =93Consume at a rapid rate, if you don't mind. The ticket is sixth row, dead center. [Actually, as I look at the tickets now, I see that they say row "b," but when I bought them the ticket-lady, said sixth row...either way, good seats down front, I guess.] I'm asking face value -- $20. No auction or anything. First person to email me gets it (please include a phone number, so we can work out the arrangments). I hope this gets posted in time. If I don't hear from anyone by Sat. mid-afternoon, I guess I'll try to scalp at the door. Just thought I'd my fellow "hard-core" fans first crack. I wish they would have shown more of Shawn singing Lyle Lovett's "Private Conversation". What I heard sounded cool. I was thinking about how everyone was telling their ideas on what songs would be great to hear Shawn cover. Of course, I think that she could make anything sound good, but I was wondering about something else. Who is one person everyone would like to hear her sing a duet with? I mean, besides the people that she's already done duets with. Personally, I wish I could have seen her sing with Neil Finn. That would have been cool. And I would like to hear her sing "Better Be Home Soon" by Crowded House or maybe "Distant Sun". Of course, I've never had the pleasure of hearing her sing any Joni Mitchell songs, either, although I know she just loves Joni. I heard that she sang a couple on VH-1 last spring, but I didn't get VH-1, unless you count a picture with no sound and a beautiful smattering of brightly colored lines running through it. So I'm sorry I missed that. Anyway, just wondering what everyone else thought about this.:) Kristen ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body.
