We're few and far between, but there are quite a few Toy Matinee freaks out here. I don't know if you have heard, but Kevin Gilbert passed away about a year ago (under VERY bizarre circumstances). I was in contact recently with the person handling his estate though, and his as yet unreleased final solo album, "The Shameing of the True", is curently being considered by some theatrical producers as a possible Broadway show (a la "Rent"). If they don't go for it, the CD of "True" should be available in a few months. I have been lucky enough to hear a few pieces of this work (sort of a rock opera about musician Johnny Virgil and his adventures in the land of the music industry weasels) and it is on par with his best Toy Matinee work. The only cut released so far has been "Suit Canon - Fugue of the A&R Staff" (an absolutely hilarious vocal piece) on the "Giant Tracks" Gentle Giant tribute CD (Kevin was a huge GG fan)... > Don't you think Shawn could do a killer cover of "Remember My Name?" (Does anybody besides me find it strange that Shawn is going on tour so soon after getting re-married or is this just a ploy for Sony to pick up the tab for a little honeymoon jaunt, but to the Midwest?) Regardless, would anyone out there be interested in a "in my humble opinion" review of the show, set-list, etc.? And I wonder, is there a small repairs person in touch from each stop of the tour? Talk to you Friday or Saturday. (ps Bob Dylan is in Columbus the night after Shawn, Friday the 7th, possibly the best 24 hours of music Columbus has seen since in many a year.) Anything about Shawn is of interest to me. Anyway, if case you didn't know. Shawn recorded her very own version of "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" a few years back. It is available on the Sony/Columbia CD entitled, "Acoustic Christmas" and features an eclectic group of performers. The CD was released in 1990, and T Bone Burnett, Harry Connick, Jr, The Hootters, Art Garfunkle and Laura Nyro are some of the other artists featured. Also, you may not be aware of yet another Christmas inspired song recorded by Shawn in 1995. It's called "Wish You Were Here." No, it's not a remake of an old Pink Floyd song. It's an original composition, co-written by Shawn. I've been a BIG Shawn fan since 1989, but I've only been on-line since March. I'd never heard anything about this song, until I happened to be shopping for the foreign version of "A Few Small Repairs," which has the extra cut "What I Get Paid For." I was browsing through the many on-line CD stores, like CD NOW, and Music Boulevard for price comparisons, when I happened to stumble upon Vinyl Vendors (VV). VV specializes in rare music. That's when I discovered the CD single of "Wish You Were Here." Since it was Shawn, I ordered it without ever previously hearing a single note. Glad I did. Thought I would share that with you, just in case... Shawn is a tour-a-haulic, you know that. As far as pounding the pavements and gigging so intensly right now, the way I understand the music biz to work is that when you have a hit cd or single out, you are obliged to scoop up the profits -- kinda like harvesting when in season. For most artists, that obligation is written in their recording contract. Remember that to Shawn, even though music is her heart, it is still a job -- not many employers allow their employees more than 2 weeks off for marriage stuff. It seems wierd thinking of it that way, but its true -- she will tell you so herself. Its hard thinking of our deity having human limitations! :-( Give us a thorough review of the show!!! (bootleg if you can!!) hehehe;-) - --Mimi - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body.
