But I actually have an excuse. I tried several times to post and it never worked. Oh well, I have a little story to tell you. A few months ago, I was living in Austin and my twin sister decided to spend a couple months with me. She had come down with an ear infection that made her face swell to the point we started calling that time "The time when her mouth was over here," (and of course we point to one side of her face). Well, she was determined to go see Kris McKay one night at the Continental Club. As we were hanging around the apartment, I began reading the Chronicle, and was surprised to see that Shawn was playing a private party (one of those shows for the MIX station there.) Well, obviously we weren't invited to this little shin-dig, because for one thing, I never listened to that radio station. But it was at the Speakeasy, so we knew that we could hear it from the alley. So we went to this show and stood in the alley and listened. As we were standing there, we could hear quite a bit, until the waiters and waitresses, who weren't allowed to serve during the show, came outside and started complaining about the whole thing. I somehow managed not to throw the whole bunch of them into the trash dumpster I was standing next to, and really did enjoy the show. I was especially glad to hear her sing "Diamond In the Rough" and "Steady On." We also met another person who had showed up to listen in the alley.. A guy named Terry had ridden his bike there, and after the show we stood around and talked to him for a while. Well, someone had mistakenly told us that Kris McKay played at nine, and after the show and after we talked to Terry, it was past nine. But we didn't want to miss seeing Kris McKay, because she's become kind of a friend of ours. So we decided to run back to the car and then go to the Continental. We got to the Continental, and found an empty building. They told us the correct time, and we decided to go see if Terry was still around, because we had kind of left mid-conversation. Well, as we approached Congress Street, the pedestrian sign was saying "Don't Walk". But since my sister and I grew up wishing we were New Yorkers, we disregarded the sign and ran across the street. Now, remember, my sister had an ear infection, so she was holding her ear and trying to run. THen she lost a sandal, and I tried to half-drag her across the street. This made her laugh, and when my sister laughs, she loses all motor function. So you can imagine what that looked like. Well, just about then, a convertible comes around the corner and screeches to a halt just before hitting us. Once we were safely on the curb, I turned around to say "thank you for not killing us!" But then I saw who the occupant of the passenger seat was. It was Shawn. She was drinking what appeared to be coffee, and she kind of raised her cup and laughed at us. I think she thought we were drunk. So we, the true fans who had hung out in the alley with the garbage cans and blabbering waiters and waitresses, had almost gotten ran over by our idol. I wish I would have had the presence of mind to say, "Hey, you play a mean trash can!" because ever since reading the credits on "I Want It Back" that's stuck in my mind. But I just kind of said, "hi," and waved. And then I started thinking ... I'd met her about three times before, and the last time I had seen her she had recognized me from the time before, which had been a couple months before. So I started hoping that she didn't recognize me this time. How embarrassing would that be? "I remember you! You're the idiot who almost put a dent in my car!" A friend of mine said that we should have just taken the hit, you know, let the car hit us. That friend then said, "you could have gotten big bucks." And of course, I wasn't thinking about big bucks. I was thinking LIFETIME FREE PASSES TO HER SHOWS!:) We were laughing later that day at the possibilities of what we could say when someone asked how our day was. "Oh, nothing special. We just almost got killed by our favorite musician." But at any rate, there's my Shawn Story. Sorry it was rather lengthy. But I have a hard time cutting out the details. And if you didn't like it, tell Jean. She's the one who told me to share :) Kristen P.S. My case is similar, but has some unique twists. My son was born a little over four years ago with Spina Bifida. He has required a lot of medical attention, and is doing very well. He has been listening to a lot of Shawn from the beginning, but due some delays, was only able to speak through sign language. Suddenly, this spring, the speech came pouring out. I was surprised how many lyrics he already knew but could not verbalize. His favorite songs are Sunny, Get Out of the House & I Want it Back. Our conversations consist of questions like: "Dad, what is transcendence?" Time for me to censor songs like Trouble. Also, my grocery store plays somewhat hip music, and this weekend, we heard 'You & the Mona Lisa'. Could it finally be coming? At least the grocery stores are more with it than the awful radio stations in Northern Virginia. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. I'm not sure what the commercial was, but I'm pretty sure it was Shawn singing a little jingle to the tune of "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas". There was kind of a simple guitar strumming tune, and then it sounded like Shawn singing something to that tune. It wasn't the lyrics to that song. I know that. But it was the melody. I didn't catch the product or even any of the picture. Just the sound. Anyway, does anyone know what commercial this might be? My five year old nephew was the first one in our family who caught the Sears automotive commercial or whatever that was...five years old and he can recognize Shawn Colvin's voice anywhere. I think we have a genius on our hands.:) Kristen ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body.
