I'm still having problems getting into "Trailer Park", mostly because of all the studio-added weirdness, perhaps a legacy from her background of collaborations with the likes of the Chemical Brothers and other UK techno-noodlers. But I'm probably just too old and set in my ways to get into that sort of thing now. But the mileage of you youngsters may vary considerably. That said, like Mary, I thoroughly enjoyed my live experience. I saw her here in Manchester about six months ago (same small standing-only venue that Shawn played in Nov. 96.) Then there was no noodling to get in the way. Just a good little four-piece band, and a small string section providing adventurous accompaniment that actually sounded like strings were meant to sound. I was interested to learn that she'd made it over there for a Lilith date or two, and I'll be interested in the direction she chooses to take come the time for a follow-up album. It'll save you a little bit of money so the prices are more down to earth. It'll take you to the site and then you can search for Beth Orton and then order away. I think it can happen. Guess what? "Get Out Of This House" was released as the first single from "A Few Small Repairs." I saw the video only once on VH-1, and never heard the song on the radio. But, wilder things have happened, and now that more people know about Shawn through their exposure to "Sunny Came Home," maybe-just maybe we could see "Get Out Of This House" re-released. The song Shawn performs on the "Carnival" CD is "All Through The Night," which is an old Welsh lullaby if I'm not mistaken. Shawn does a wonderful job, but it's only 1:43 long. You're left wanting more. Other artists on the CD, which benefits the Rainforest Foundation, are: Sting, Bette Midler, Annie Lennox, Elton John, James Taylor, Madonna, and Paul Simon to name a few. The CD was released earlier this year on RCA Victor/BMG records. The catalog number is 74321 44769-2 if any of you need that to order copies any anthing like that. Also, I'd like to suggest that everyone pick up a copy of "The 1992 Telluride Bluegrass Festival" CD. It's a doulbe CD on Planet Bluegrass records that came out in 1993. This CD contains a WONDERFUL version of Shawn singing "Shotgun Down the Avelanche" with Bela Fleck doing some magic on the banjo. The CD also features David Wilcox, Mary-Chapin Carpenter, Blue Rodeo, Emmylou Harris, and even Dougie MacLean. I believe Planet Bluegrass has a web site on the Internet. AND---there is also a video of the Telluride Bluegrass Festival that features Shawn and the artists on this CD. Shawn is wearing the dress you see on the cover of "Live '88." Both the CD and Video are worth every penny. Happy listening!! Man, that is my absolute favorite new song by Shawn. I guess it wouldn't have fit in the mix of songs on AFSR, but I have to admit I like it better than any song on AFSR and I like them A WHOLE GREAT BIG BUNCH. Someone asked if you could see Shawn in the movie "Grace Of My Hert." The answer is yes, but you'd better not blink. She is sitting on a stump in a park, playing her guitar and singing "Between Two Worlds" as the star, Ileana Douglas, is walking by. It was a joy to see Shawn even if it was for only a second or two. The movie is actually pretty good. It sort of parallels Carole King's life, with a few fictional variations thrown in for good measure. It would make a good double bill with "That Thing You Do" since both are about the same era in music. I sure would love to see that soundtrack from Edie & Penn released too. Happy listening!! I listen to a lot of music in languages I don't understand, and I'm fine with that. For all I know, they *are* singing the phone book to me... To me, music is a form of personal communication that doesn't necessarily need to be literally translated into words to be effective or meaningful on some level. Of course, if you do know the story behind the music and understand the words and the message the artist is trying to convey, then that takes you to another level. Different, but not necessarily better. Sometimes, I like the mystery of not knowing everything, maybe that's just me. Perhaps there is a song on Cover Girl by a female artist, but I thought in the liner notes Shawn talked about not having any songs written by women on the recording.
