I thought I'd offer my .02 worth about which Shawn cds our "new friend" should get. My favorite album of all time is "Steady On" but the rest are fantastic as well. As another fan stated, "depends on what mood you're in..." I think the Live 88 is terrific since its just Shawn with her guitar. I'm a huge Springsteen fan also and as Bruce said "its scary playing alone b/c everyone can tell whether you actually have any talent" or if its just hype. I agree with him - playing with a band is great and all but it can also be kind of a crutch. Shawn will NEVER have to worry about lack of talent. I know her recent popularity is due to AFSR (great album) and that's really good for her. As we all know, Shawn's had some pretty rough times and I'm just glad that she's doing well and enjoying herself (and the attending hoopla of stardom). She's also a terrific person with a wonderful sense of humor. She really appreciates her fans and always takes time after shows to make sure those hanging out for an autograph get one. I've been to 7 shows on this tour from Philly to Knoxville and I only travel like a fool for Shawn, the BOSS and Emmylou Harris. Oh well...my last piece of advice is to just BUY ALL THE ALBUMS as my colleagues on this digest can attest...you can't go wrong!!! Do true Colvinites acknowledge that song as part of the official SC repertoire? It is obviously more commercial and not too serious lyrically, but it is a lot of fun. For George: "Cover Girl" is full of some great music. I have never heard the original versions of any of those songs, but they could not have been done any better. "Some day" describes the town where I live. "Window to the World," "One Small Remove," and "If These Walls Could Talk" are fantastic. AFSR-L'ers, correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't the chronology of Shawn's discography go this way: 1. Steady On 2. Fat City 3. Cover Girl 4. Live 88 5. A Few Small Repairs I believe Steady On was her first LP not Live 88. I remember reading the USA Today review, going out, and buying the CD. I'm pretty sure the review was billing it as her first release. In fact, weren't Cover Girl and Live 88 released because she was going thru a long spell of writer's block and the label was pressuring her to come out with something. Maybe, Hans could clear this up since he had an affilation with Sony/Columbia. To Shawn newbies, one of the things I think you'll discover as we all have on this list: Shawn doesn't put any filler on her LP's. Almost all of the songs have a great melody and pretty impressive lyrics. That's why I buy the writer's block thing. I think she's a perfectionist. - -- Greg Welker welkerg@uakron.edu CBA Computer Labs The University of Akron - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. Now I'm going to have to buy the soundtrack. Speaking of soundtracks Philip, Shawn did the soundtrack for an HBO movie called "Edie & Penn". During the credits, she covers a Siberry song called "Sail Across the Water". I've been lobbying for this as B-side material for several months now. I grok it. Siberry's version is excellent as well ("When I was a Boy" is name of LP, I think). Shawn just gives it a different flavor. - -- Greg Welker welkerg@uakron.edu CBA Computer Labs The University of Akron - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. Nothing On Me should definitely be a single release. It is more commercial (musically) than anything Shawn has ever done, but still has the strength of Shawn's lyrical talent. It will consolidate her single popularity but will, through album sales, expose a much greater number of people to Shawn's immense strength in depth in an unique musical genre that some had never before thought to consider. Secondly, sorry LLee991218@aol.com, but I've got to tell you about how lucky I was last year to see Emmylou three nights in a row at a venue 5 minutes walk from my home in Camden, London. She played The Jazz Cafe which holds probably 400 people max. and did all of Wrecking Ball (one of the best albums of the decade) and some old favo(u)rites, including a stunning Love Hurts. Anyway, I gloat. You may be able to see Emmylou more often than myself, but it's great to see someone of Emmylou's stature and talent play a gig in a small venue, a venue that Shawn played on her second? visit to these shores. Maybe Shawn will play there again for a few nights as Emmylou did instead of a large venue that fame seems to demand. (That is, if Sony allow Shawn to become famous over here by allowing her to release a single in the UK from time to time) ____________________________________________________________________ Get free e-mail and a permanent address at http://www.netaddress.com - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. A Few Small Repairs You're absolutely right on the release chronology, Greg. Although "Live 88" was recorded before all the others, it wasn't released until after "Cover Girl". Shawn had originally planned to release "LIVE 88" on her own (and had even gone so far as having cassettes duplicated), but then the deal with Columbia/Sony came along and her management evidently advised her not to proceed with the private release so as not to screw up the deal... I'm pretty sure the review was billing it as her >first release. _Steady On_ was her first major label release. _Live 88_ is most of an independently produced cassette (cleverly titled _Live Tape_) that was her first solo album. She used to sell it at shows before she was signed to Columbia. You may be able to find it at used record shops, especially in the Boston-New York-DC area, where she was working a lot at the time, and where a few record stores carried it when it was new. It's my (perhaps incorrect) understanding that she stopped selling it as part of her recording contract. It was produced by folk producer extaordinaire, Darleen Wilson. Good stuff. A couple tracks were rerecorded for _Live 88_, and bits of conversation with the audience are missing, but it's pretty much intact. The old tracks were remastered, the sound of the CD is amazing compared to the analog hiss of the cassette. (On the CD, you can actually hear fingers lifting off of the guitar strings. Maybe there's something to this digital stuff after all...) And because folks will ask, no, sorry, I can't dupe it for anyone. No loss, though, _Live 88_ is the version to have, it's a terrific CD, and what everyone was clammoring for when the buzz had it that _Cover Girl_ would be a completely live album with no overdubs. - - Kate - --- Kara Longo longo@world.std.com - --- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. It was just flat out perfect. I repeated her name to myself fifty times so I wouldn't forget it and went to Tower the next day and found Steady On. Since that day I have been fully Colvinized. I have two of the soundtracks where she has contributed a song not found on an album; Tin Cup and One Fine Day, where she covers a Van Morrison song. She sings that song in a very plain un-Shawn-like voice, but I like it anyway. She also contributes a number to the rain forest benefit CD, Carnival, which is very good. My favorite non-Shawn CD with Shawn songs on it (...uh, you know...) is the Columbia Records Radio Hour Volume 1, which has Polaroids, Shotgun (with Mary Chapin Carpenter, this is the best version of this song, IMHO), and then Shawn sings backup on Chapin's Come On Come On, which is also excellent, listen to them all with headphones. This also includes a bit of banter between the songs. And the rest of the CD is pretty good, as well. It's interesting to hear the originals of some of the songs from Cover Girl. The one that is furthest from the original has to be Naive Melody (This Must Be The Place), a Talking Heads song. Someday is a Steve Earle tune and it is pretty faithful to the original, as is Satin Sheets. I would like to hear the original of One Cool Remove... A couple of weeks ago people were mentioning songs they'd like to see Shawn cover in the future. I would love for her to record I'll Be Back which she did at some solo shows in the summer. But sticking with her own model of covering songs from male artists only, I would like to hear her do Your Latest Trick from Dire Straits and Peter Gabriel's In Your Eyes. As to what is considered officially accepted Shawn material, I can only paraphrase what others have said; if Shawn were to do an album of atonal, Siberian nose-humming, backed by a heard of angry Yaks, we'd buy it. I just felt that I have to help a new Shawn fan find his way in this crazy world......that's all it takes to make me posts. I was just wondering has anyone listen to Beth Orton's CD "trailer park". I really liked it and also got a chance to see her live in Boston. If she tours in your town you should check her out. Great live show. Just thought I would share. Pulling the live cassette was part of the strategy to clinch the Columbia/Sony deal. My previous post may have been misleading on that point. I didn't mean to imply that the cassette was never released. Heck, I have a copy of it myself (and, no, I'm sorry but out of respect for Shawn I won't duplicate it for anyone either). Also I agree with you 100% that the CD re-release is the superior version. The cassettes were cheaply dubbed on not particularly high-grade tapes (Shawn wasn't exactly "pulling down the big bucks" at the time, after all). Believe me, those of you who don't have the original cassette version are really not missing anything... BTW, I really wasn't lurking.
