Yeah I got that, but it was a bit more than a screen saver. I think Sony called the package they were selling a 'Screener'. You could adjust the way it was displayed - bouncing around the screen, and a jigsaw style etc. etc. There was also an absoluteley useless game included where you matched portions of the video frames. It wasn't available in the UK, but I was lucky enough to get The Round of Blues copy and another Shawn version at the Sony Plaza in New York. It was the only place that sold them in late 96. I tried all the record shops. Even then, the Screeners were not on display and a very helpful guy went looking for 15 minutes for me and came up with the goods. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. Her first cd LIVE 88 is all live stuff she recorded when she was just getting started. They took a lot of that material and made Steady On which won her a Grammy or two. get Live 88 and you'll be impressed with the sound quality. You can hear the strings squeek on her guitar. Cover Girl is also great and Polaroids is a classic. A Few Small Repairs was the first cd of hers I had. You can not go wrong by buying any of these. A small correction: I think Mike meant Fat City instead of Polaroids (which is the first track on the album). If you like her latest tunes, I'd either go for AFSR or Fat City. The reason for Fat City is that it is sort of half way between where Shawn is now and where Shawn was in the past. It'll help you decide if you'd rather go with her older stuff or her newer stuff. Personally, I love the Live '88 & Steady On albums more than the rest combined, but I know that Shawn's current popularity has more to do with AFSR. - --Chris - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. I too have been a list lurker George, and it's nice to hear from the guys as well as you lady's,so Ill come out of the closet too. Saw Shawn in Portland a few mo's back. Have seen lots of fine shows featuring some great singer-songwriters. This lady was beyond good. I was mesmorized with her voice, the depth and strength of her musicianship, and the fact that every song was so good! Where to start?-I'd go with either "Fat City" from I think 93, or "Steady On" from I think 89. Then move into the current recording. I just ordered Live88 and "Cover Girl" Maybe someone can let me know if I'm missing anything! My favorite is Fat City esp. Round of Blues and Jane. Love to hear others favs and why. Clearly, this is an artist who touches the listener. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. You're right mike, they are all good! here is my breakdown... (And everyone is free to comment...) get Steady On if you are after a slightly more melancholy sound, more subdued... i think this one is the strongest overall lyrically, at least for me... It's kind of simple and straightforward ... this one is my very favorite. if i had to give up all my shawn CDs but one, this is the one i would keep. get Live 88 for the raw, stripped-down shawn... just her and her guitar, baby! you won't believe your ears... what a voice! Kathy's Song is fantastic.... or, you could get Fat City which has Polaroids.. what a brilliant song. And Round of Blues... the first shawn song i ever heard! (and haven't been the same since!) and Kill the Messenger, which is probably my favorite song by shawn... (that is, if someone held a gun to my head and FORCED me choose...) I think this is the most upbeat of all the CDs.. the one with the most "hooks." There are a lot of layers to this CD in terms of production, i think... with instumentation, and background vocals... Fascinating to listen to with headphones... Lots of guest spots too! Joni Mitchell, Bruce Hornsby, the now defunct Subdudes, Richard Thompson, Bela Fleck, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Chris Whitley... Why this CD didn't have a gazillion singles released off of it is beyond me. I had always hoped they would release "Object of My Affection" as a single... errr... of course, maybe they did and i just missed it in my backwards town.... Cover Girl... took me a while to love it as much as i do... i think that the most impressive thing about this CD (other than the fact that i have actually grown to love her version of Every Little Thing, despite initial cries of 'Blasphemy'!! i, uh... love Sting...) is that the performances are so good you can hardly believe most of the tracks are live. Whew! Dang, she's good. My favorite song off this CD is "Twilight." AFSR is very good if you like the pop thang she does so well... yet somehow she stays true to her sound guitarwise AND lyrically... it's just brilliant. "Trouble" is my favorite off this CD... if you like Sunny and Mona Lisa, you won't be disappointed! There ya go... BigHAIR's $.05... (i didn't have any pennies to make it $.02!) ;) And welcome to our world, George. Thanks for delurking... You are in great company here! (just, uh... don't mention Hanson, Sony or flying paintings, and you'll be fine!) Kidding, kidding... i'm only kidding everybody! Local CD import shop, Gaslight, has had various Screeners for sale for a while, but I don't think they are big sellers... even at AUD$20 a pop. neill PS: loved the Finn piccies :) - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. Hey gang, The way the exchange rate on the aussie dollar is looking at the moment (it's dropped 9 cents in the last 6 hours!) i'm not sure i can actually afford to throw in my 2 cents on this discussion.... but money, schmoney, and i'll have a quick say anyway.... :) I reckon everyone's pretty much summed up the dilemma of which Shawn cd to start with... how *does* one choose between perfection and... well.. perfection? I gotta say that if you were holding a gun to my head and making me give up all my shawn cds but one, you may as well just go ahead and shoot me! I think the ever insightful and bighairful jean did a pretty good job of describing the differences in sound and feel of each album.... that's the great thing about Shawn (well, one of the many...) - no matter what mood you're in, she's got something for ya! >Cover Girl... took me a while to love it as much as i do... I admit it actually took me a while to even *buy* Cover Girl.... (yes, shame on me, I know...) but the concept kinda scared me... Shawn? sensational songwriter that she is? doing a whole album of *covers*?! But you see, i hadn't had the benefit of seeing her live and knowing what a great job she does with other people's songs... and after thinking about it for a while, I got over it enough to give it a go, and, needless to say, was damn glad I did! What it comes down to really, is that it doesn't matter where you start with Shawn, cos you'll just end up buying them all anyway! So go get started!! >company here! Kidding, kidding... i'm only kidding You know, I was hanging out in Sony's Sydney office the other day, and who should walk in but the lads from Hanson! Well, there were these fans there that had painted pictures of them and started throwing them at them and..... oh... I'm sorry... I forgot! (it's the exchange rate thing....
