Richard in Liverpool beat me to the suggestion that you set the VCR for the VH-1 Europe Country program, if you have access. Good advice. That's where I've grabbed all the Small Repairs videos on tape (though unless you're sitting on the pause button live or have video editing facilities, you'll also capture a nasty dose of bland formulaic modern NashVegas output.) Nevertheless, I'm concerned that this program has been consigned from thrice a week (with different inserts each time) to just once a week. Will it be nonce a week come the next seasonal schedule shake-up? Does anyone in my part of the world know if Shawn ever gets any play on CMT Europe? I lost access about a year ago when the local cable company dropped it, but I've heard report that they've since broadened their playlist somewhat. I don't think the Mona Lisa video is too cringe-inducingly obvious overall. The only references to La Giaconda are to streetside readymades (ie. the "Lisa Mona" boutique, and that big black&white mural with the technicolour fruit.) Maybe the studio backdrop of gallery walls is a bit trite, but the only works one gets a reasonably close glimpse of are a Canalletto view of Venice, and a portrait that looks like Whistler's Mother. I'll certainly agree that Shawn looks particularly radiant in this video. The brief close-up shots they left in there when her guitar strap accidentally snaps off are precious. The best luck I ever had with Shawn videos on VH-1 was in capturing a three-in-a row slot of Every Little Thing, Round of Blues, & I Don't Know Why. If anyone has not yet witnessed these items, I'll append a fragment of a post I sent to the Mary Chapin list back in early '96. But these three videos, the recent Small Repairs stuff, and a couple of MCC collaborations, are all I know of Shawn's videos. Does anyone have a complete list of everything that is out there? I'll definitely be with you guys in lobbying for an official video release of this stuff. Martyn Manchester, UK - -------------------- --------------------- Every Little Thing He Does is Magic: Me: Well who woulda thought there was a decent song in there underneath Mr. Sumner's strangled wailings? (Just jesting, Sting appreciators.) It features a regular human Shawn meandering through deciduous woodlands, plus a very tiny shawn replete with wings and antennae (definitely Shawn as insect rather than as angel) buzzing the sleeping male humanoid of affection. Siskel: Preposterous crap. The bullfrog featured could have a future in Hollywood, but that's the best I can say. Thumbs down. Ebert: Masterly symbolist short. Conveys more psychological insights in 3 minutes than does Fassbinder's "Wings of Desire" in 3 hours. Thumbs up. Round of Blues: Me: Awful hard to sit still long enough to watch this one closely. Shawn in and around a rundown diner in a Joshua tree strewn desert "on a lost highway". An 'abandoned waitress' role is perhaps hinted at, but not explicit... Siskel & Ebert: That little earth-toned number the heroine sports gets our votes for Best Item Of Attire in a Supporting Role. Both thumbs erect. I Don't Know Why: Clockwork Mice promo tie-in. Film set in a British junior school a decade or two back. Quite a bit of running around featured, some in derivative Chariots of Fire-style slo-mo. A few shots of English countryside and old trains in full steam thrown in to boost the UK tourist trade. The occasional brief head and torso shot of Shawn singing fades in and out amidst the film footage proper. Siskel: Who was that Colin Welland twit that said "the British are coming" that year we deigned to let 'em have a few Oscars? Dreadful drivel. Thumbs down. Ebert: And not a name I know in it. Who on earth are John Alderton & James Bolam? Thumbs down. Barry Norman: Who on earth are Siskel & Ebert when they're at home? - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body.
