Hi Kat!!! In a message dated 97-10-12 00:25:16 EDT, you wrote: << One thing I don't think we need to worry about too much is that Shawn is going to change herself or her music to reflect new found mass popularity... >> Well, I have noticed one slight change in her. She seems very extremely drained as of late (more than the usual jetlag/road drag). I think it started taking a toll on her in the past couple of months. I think it may be a combination of her current level of extreme powertouring, mixed with night after night of venues packed with TALKERS who only came to hear Sunny, and ruin it for the rest of us by yapping loudly. I presume based on things that i have seen that, to her, it is disheartining, distracting and disrespectful in her opinion. I am starting to hear sarcasm in her voice when she talks about being happy with her fame and success. I think I may have an idea of one of the main contributing factors and reasons why. I am guessing here, but I think she may have/had some kind of contract with the MIX radio station conglomerate to play free shows for each MIX radio station in each MIX town. (These were exclusive shows where you can go only if you win tickets from the radio station). I think its a VERY clever symbiotic promotional idea. It promotes both the radio station by giving out freebies to their audiences, in turn it increases her radio airplay and gives tremendous exposure and saturation of the top 40 listeners. BUT... i see a huge flaw... it sucks playing to an audience who doesnt want to listen, barely know who she is, and only came because it was free. I was lucky enough to win tickets to one of those shows (believe me... listening to that station in order to get them was pure torture!!!) I sat my chair about 4 feet directly in front of her to and plopped myself down to listen with eager ears. (there were tables and chairs that you could move around wherever you wanted---believe me I wasnt shy about where i wanted to sit!!) I was joined by about 5 or 6 other dedicated long time shawn fans who also lucked out in winning tickets. The rest of the 400 people cluttered about in the back and talked so loud you couldnt hear yourself think. [What was REALLY heartbreaking is seeing all the real Shawn fans stuck outside without tickets, catching wafts of the music through the door as it opened and closed. (I have come to recognize some of them from seeing them at so many other Shawn shows)] During the show, of the guys sitting next to me yelled out a request for Steady On and she immediately started playing it... almost as if she felt lonely and ignored onstage and eager to make contact with her long-time dedicated fans who knew songs other than Sunny. As she was playing the introduction to Steady On the distraction of the crescendoing chatter caused her to screw up on the guitar part (the part where she does the straight one-fret bar chords). well, she hit the wrong fret and yelled painfully "AHhhh!!!!!" found the right fret and kept playing... At that point she was too pissed to contain herself and stopped, waved her hands angrily in the air and yelled "WAIT WAIT WAIT WAIT HOLD ON A MINUTE... I CANNOT F**KING HEAR!!!" She proceeded to yell at the audience for talking, and stood up for those of us in the front who actually came to hear her play. We roared with glee!!!!! then she made a side joke about running for a political office from the applause. Later that night at the meet and greet part of the party, she looked and acted like she was getting burnt out on schmoozing with people... not just for that night, but overall. She sat in a chair and signed autographs one after another after another like a zombie in an assembly line-------as if everyone were faceless. Does that sound like the Shawn we know? Hell no!!! I would under any other circumstance be inclined to think she was acting that way just because she was pissed at that particular audience; but her latest media interviews seems to reflect a serious, deep-level bitterness towards having top 40 fame of this nature. If this is true, than we should do our best to let her know that if she wanted to come back home to her devoted following and ditch the top 40 scene, then we will give her all the moral support that she needs. If its the money, I speaking for myself would be more than happy to pass the hat and give it ALL directly to her and leave out the greedy middlemen. If its the trophies, we can get her some of those too;-) LOL!!! (just being silly here!! but its not a bad idea!!!) hahhaha!!! HEY!! I GOT IT!!! [s-r] could launch a nationwide "TAKE BACK SHAWN" rescue campaign!!!! Who wants to design the tshirts??? (Dee? Janel?) wow!! bumperstickers, bilboards, public service annoucements, non-profit organization tax breaks... I am getting a vision here!! Anyone want to join in on the idea? hahaha.... WE love you, Shawn!!! We are here for ya through thick and thin! hehehe;-) - ---Mimi PS: Could you imagine the size of hat we would have to use for passing around to hold all of her personal support donations? LOL!! DONT JUST WORSHIP, TITHE!!! Heard "You and the Mona Lisa" on the radio twice yesterday here in little ol' Clarksburg, West Virginia (pop.18500 give or take a few). I'm excited about that for obvious reasons. Also, I caught the video this morning on the VH-1 Sunday Brunch show. Didn't get a chance to get it on video tape because it snuck up on me. I still think SONY needs to release a video compilation of Shawn's videos. Come on gang, let's get those cards and letters in to Sony. Maybe Jean can organize an official request for the group or something. I'm willing to sign up. Admittedly she did seem a bit tired when i saw her... not so much when she was playing, she was a bundle of energy then, and overall was getting a pretty good audience response which she seemed to enjoy, but when I saw her after the show she looked pretty tired... as you would be of course, after any show. But yeah, she did seem a bit ho-hum about all the meeting the fans, signing things etc... I felt a bit bad actually, like I was intruding on her space. But at least she knew I was really a huge fan, and not just a Sunny fan..... so she was pretty nice to me :) (not saying that she wasn't nice to everyone else, I'm sure she was... I didn't see...) >distracting and disrespectful in her opinion. I am starting to hear >sarcasm in her voice when she talks about being happy with her fame >and success. Ya got me there too... that's the distinct impression I got in the TV interview I saw here a while back... it was really a bit hard to read her facial expression, but she definitely didn't look or sound like she was as ecstatic about her fame as she said she was... >I am guessing here, but I think she may have/had some kind of >contract with the MIX radio station conglomerate to play free shows >for each MIX radio station in each MIX town. (These were exclusive >shows where you can go only if you win tickets from the radio >station). Geez, I didn't realise the MIX stations were a worldwide curse... I thought it was just us. And ours *was* giving away tickets to Shawn, which surprised me at the time (which I think I mighta mentioned..) but it wasn't a ticket-winners only show... I know that cos I was there! And that night was really a better audience than the night before... which could've had something to do with the venue - they try hard to enforce respect for the artists, and have big signs up everywhere asking people not to talk during the show... and woe betide you if you do try to talk (as some always do..) cos you'll immediately get shushed loudly by a large number of real fans.... it's great! Still, there wasn't much shushing required for Shawn, mostly the sudience seemed real keen to be there and listen... and I think Shawn noticed... she seemed pretty impressed that there were that many of us so far from her homeland that knew her and loved her music... >MINUTE... I CANNOT F**KING HEAR!!!" She proceeded to yell at the >audience for talking, and stood up for those of us in the front who >actually came to hear her play. We roared with glee!!!!! Good on her too! I was kinda hoping she'd do something like that at the first show I went to, where all the people who had seats were enthralled but all the punters standing around up the back and by the bar wouldn't shut up... they might've been far enough away from her not to worry her... (wish I could say the same about me!) >hahhaha!!! HEY!! I GOT IT!!! [s-r] could launch a nationwide "TAKE >BACK SHAWN" rescue campaign!!!! Who wants to design the tshirts??? >(Dee? Janel?) wow!! bumperstickers, bilboards, public service >annoucements, non-profit organization tax breaks... I am getting a >vision here!! Anyone want to join in on the idea? Hey, I'm always up for a wild idea and a good cause! And you've got me worried enough now that poor old Shawn (I mean... not old.... you know what I mean..) is getting the life sucked right out of her by the Top 40 scene, that I'll be in it! I can run the Australian branch!! I already work for a non-profit organisation so I know the rules... ;) Let's do it!! Heh heh heh....
