I'm never gonna "make it" in the music biz, those days and dreams are long past, but I still play gigs because I happen to love playing. (Plus having a day job to pay the bills I get to eat a lot more frequently and stay home a lot more.) I love Shawn Colvin's music. She's my favorite female singer-songwriter since Joni Mitchell in the 60's. And I'm exactly split on the concept of Shawn having hits and mass popularity: on the one hand I want as many people to hear her as is humanly possible because there's something in her music I think people in these days of 1997 need; warmth, intelligence, power, beauty, committment. (Plus I want Shawn to make big piles of money, 'cause after all these years of scuffling she certainly deserves it.) And a higher profile for Shawn is certainly good for us fans; more TV, more press, more tours, etc. On the other hand: I loved Bruce Springsteen in the 70's, I love a lot of his music still, but I don't think anyone who was around at the time and was a fan can deny that the whole Born-in-the-USA-elevating-Broooooce- to-tabloid-fodder really damaged his credibility and creativity. There's an entire generation of kids I know who just think of Bruce like they do Madonna or Michael Jackson; overblown 80's media hypes. And that generation of kids will never hear Bruce play a sublime "Darkness on the Edge of Town" like we did back when Bruce could play 3000 seat theaters and most of the world had no clue what a "Bruce Springsteen" was. So do I want Shawn Colvin looked back on and grouped with the Spice Girls and Hanson in the hitmakers sweepstakes? I don't think so. Do I wanna share her with the rest of the planet? Yes, but maybe only with about 3000 people in each city at a time. Love & music, Ric ps. some other songwriters you might wanna check out; Steve Earle, Hamell On Trial, the late Townes Van Zandt (start with the live CD Rear View Mirror, it's a lyric miracle). I mean, give the girl 5 minutes to at least >RELEASE another song why don't they?! Hey everybody, I'm new here and I have to confess a little confused by the one-hit wonder debate. I first saw Shawn in 1989, opening for Richard Thompson, when she had just released Steady On. Since that time there have been three more albums all of which got plenty of airtime in the city where I used to live (Seattle). By "one hit" are we talking about national top 40 stuff? I never listen to top 40 stations myself, so I don't know what they play or say. But she's certainly had a series of big hits as far as the stations I listen to go. Anyway, I guess it just seems to me that since Shawn sold out venues in Seattle several times a year for the six years that I lived there, she can hardly be described as a one-hit wonder. And if some idiot music-reviewer doesn't know enough about the music scene to know better than dismiss her in that way, well that just reflects badly on him/her. I think I agree with Ric and Mimi too.. it is hard trying to balance your desire for Shawn to get all the success and associated benefits she deserves, and for everyone to hear her and think she's as great as we do, with your desire for her not to be dumped into a one-hit-wonder, or top 40 for the masses, or Spice Girls or whatever type category... (geez the Spice Girls are good for analogies aren't they.... see? everyone has a purpose in life....heh heh heh) And what bugs me most about stupid ignorant comments like that reviewer's is that at best, it's misleading, and really it's quite simply not true, and although it certainly reflects badly on that reviewer for those of us who know better, it also reflects badly on Shawn for those who don't know better.... and therefore perhaps alienates a potential audience for Shawn... Now I dunno how many people who don't know of Shawn would really take one bad review seriously, but you never know... people can be very easily led... One thing I don't think we need to worry about too much is that Shawn is going to change herself or her music to reflect new found mass popularity... I suspect at this stage in her life, after all her years of introspection and struggling, she's smart enough and knows herself well enough not to 'sell out' in that respect... what do ya'll think? She seems to me to be pretty damn grounded... In fact I'd go so far as to say she's one of the most darned grounded musos out there! I'm sure she'll love any increase in her popularity, not least cos she makes more money that way.. ;), but I don't think it'll really change the way she is.
