Well.... after many months of reading all your reports on Shawn's gigs, it's finally my turn!!! But geez... where to start? First night was at the Harbourside Brasserie - great location, right under the Sydney Harbour Bridge. As in Melbourne, Monique Brumby was supporting... she was pretty good, even tho she turned up late :) (which I think is why a couple of songs got cut from Shawn's set...) :( At first I thought the audience was gonna be pretty polite, but as the standing room only crowd started drifting in, I realised maybe not... Monique got very little respect really, plenty of talking over her. I cursed my luck as Glenn A Baker came in and sat down at a spare chair at my table... for non-aussies who don't know who he is, he's a well-known "rock historian", with a very loud, grating voice and an opinion on everything.... fortunately he didn't try to commentate the show :) Anyway, Shawn and the boys came out to rousing applause and launched into Kill The Messenger.... set list was pretty much the same as it has been for all the shows, but I'll give it to you anyway... Kill The Messenger Another Long One Get Out of This House The Facts about Jimmy You and the Mona Lisa Window to the World Wichita Skyline Trouble Polaroids Steady On I Want It Back Sunny Came Home Round Of Blues encores If I Were Brave What I Get Paid For Killing The Blues Diamond in the Rough We got all the usual banter throughout... the Newt Gingrich and lipstick jokes after Get out of this House etc. I suspect a lot of the audience had no idea who the hell Newt is... a couple of people laughed really loud, and a few laughed just cos they realised it was a joke of some kind.... The funniest part of the whole evening was when Steuart attempted to join in on cue at the beginning of I Want it Back, screwed it up royally and threw his hands out with a look on his face like "wooooaaahhhh.... what the hell was that?!!" The audience all cracked up laughing, Shawn turned round to see what was going on, had a bit of a laugh at poor Steuart shaking his head, and kept going. When Steaurt finally managed to join in, he got a huge round of applause and cheering... Of course the actual music was great - the audience was loving it (except for the few punters whose conversations were more important and refused to shut up - why do they go?!). Only complaint was that Larry's bass was cranked up way too high, and was really bone-jarringly overpowering in a lot of songs... but I can live with that! In the encores she got a lot of people yelling out for Shotgun, and also Killing the Blues, which she did (and it was GREAT!!!) Shawn seemed kind of surprised that they were getting such a good reception, she said at the end they were really glad they'd come down... And I didn't think she'd do it, but Shawn and Larry both tried on their aussie accents.... very brave. In fact, it was just before she sang If I Were Brave... and although it was a nice attempt, it wasn't that close.... :) little bit too much British in it really - but you gotta love her for trying! Anyway, after the show I waited for her out the front so I could say hi... wasn't hard at all, only had to wait 10 minutes. I told her I was off the list.... she just can't get away from us! She happily signed a couple of CD covers for me and I let her go - she looked pretty tired (hell, so was I!). And for the fashion conscious among you, she was wearing a long, short sleeved burgundy dress.... But wait - there's more! The next night was at the Basement, a much better venue acoustically, and the audience were also much better behaved, and even more enthusiastic. And Monique was not only on time, she started early! Shawn's set list was pretty much the same, except we also got Stranded, and two encores that included the additions of Someday and New Thing Now. The three of them seemed to be in a pretty good mood, and were having lots of fun. Larry got paid out a bit... they did this whole bit about how complex he is - Shawn started raving on about 'The Many Levels of Larry' and they thought it sounded like a good book title. She said that the stipulation for Larry coming to Australia was that his therapist had to come too, and Steuart immediately joined in with "yeah, and it's just lucky I can play guitar too!" which the audience loved :) Shawn told the story about getting off the plane in Melbourne, and when they got in the van, Steuart "our rock" suddenly said "is anyone else feeling pyschotic?!".. apparently he felt like he was upside down... and he was serious.... Anyway, there were plenty of requests shouted out for the encores, with people going "please please please...." etc. After a couple of minutes of listening to it all, Shawn just went "Aaaarrrgghh" (or something like that) into the mike, and we all laughed and shut up and let her sing whatever she wanted... We were all stoked when she came out again for the second encore, cos she hadn't looked like she would. So after the show, I left my friend waiting for me and went off to look for Shawn's manager Ron Fierstein, since our most wonderful list hostess Jean had been chatting online with him that afternoon, and he'd said to tell me to find him and say hi... so I found a security guy I'd been talking to the night before who went and found Ron for me. He took me backstage and introduced me as "Kat, the Sydney representative from the Small Repairs list" and said I was a friend of Jean's... to which Shawn responded "oh yeah, Jean, I know her - BigHAIR!!" I just laughed.... you're just so darn famous Jean! :) So there I was backstage chatting to Shawn (again!) and got introduced to Larry and Steuart (they really are funny guys!). Shawn saw I had my camera with me and asked if I wanted a picture.. so we got the sound guy to take some pix of me with Shawn and the boys... we had to take a couple cos Larry wanted one with his "model face"... Anyway, I'm sure that's more than long enough of a report! I just had the greatest time! I told Shawn when I left that I'd be expecting to see her back again soon and she said "well, we never know....". I think I'll have to re-submit my survey now that I can actually put a decent answer to "no of times you've seen Shawn live".... Kat :) PS Aren't you all glad I can stop counting down the days now? ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body.
