There's a CD review of AFSR in last Friday's Sydney Morning Herald, which you can find at http://www.smh.com.au/metro/content/970926/features/feat7.html. Be warned that the reviewer might not really have been paying that much attention, as she got half the song titles wrong... I mean, referring to Sunny Came Home as the "title track, A Few Small Repairs" is just pretty dumb really. It says some nice things about Shawn tho, so it's not too bad. And at least they've finally realised the album is out there, 6 months later... See what a tour can do for your publicity?! There was also another article in the paper that I couldn't find on the web site, so I took it upon myself to provide it for y'all :) Although again you gotta wonder about their facts - eg. we all know that Shawn left Vermillion long before she turned 17... anyway, here it is: Colvin evolvin' It's dubbed the Redneck Riviera but Shawn Colvin seems unperturbed as she prepares to take the stage before an impossibly rowdy beer-swigging crowd at the House of Blues, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. As the diminutive singer/guitarist begins her set, the crowd still their ice-filled plastic cups and wipe off the drop from their onion fries to pay attention. It's the kind of attention her crystal-clear, honest voice has always commanded since Colvin left her hometown of Vermillion, South Dakota, at the age of 17 for a life on the road playing bars, clubs and weddings. Mass attention has taken a little longer. She was 32 by the time she released her Grammy-winning debut album, Steady On, but it would take another nine years for Colvin to revel in mainstream success with her fourth album, A Few Small Repairs. The title is a line from her first bona fide radio hit, Sunny Came Home, a lifting but twisted ode to relationship break-up. "My job conditions have improved but I've been doing this a long time so nothing has really changed" she says modestly. The 41 year old singer, who is preparing to marry for the second time in October, admits she was set to retire from the rigours of the road if her latest album failed to ignite, but her slow simmer to success did give her time to find her niche as a songwriter. "I tried to write blithe pop songs, but I just wasn't very good at it" she says, preferring instead to weave more intricate melodies. Not that Colvin's any more confident about the results. Neil Finn sent her an unfinished song to complete, What I Get Paid For, which appears on her album, but Colvin's too scared to ask him what he thinks. "I really wanted to keep it in the spirit of a Neil Finn song because I'm such a fan but I'm not sure if I did a good job" she says. "But I guess he wouldn't have sent me the tape if he thought I was total crap." Colvin, who was part of the hugely successful all female Lilith tour which played through the US summer, agrees her upsurge has come at a time when the musical climate favours female performers, but her southern fried voice sizzles at the thought of comparisons. "I call it the beauty pageant mentality where there is supposed to be only one winner - one woman - this year's model and the rest of us are supposed to be cattily backbiting each other" she says. "When I first came out I was the next Suzanne Vega, now I'm the dues-paying, hard-working she's-been-in-the-trenches-and-finally-made-it-singer". Katherine Tulich - Sydney Morning Herald Metro I'll get back to yas in a couple of days with my show reports - when I've recovered :) Just over 4 hours to go!!!! The long drawn-out countdown is almost over!!!
