I still have to pinch myself to believe I've finally seen Shawn live... twice :) CONTINENTAL CAFE: Shawn's first gig was at the Continental Cafe was, according to the blurb, to be a stand-up only affair, so I was surprised to see the tables in the usual areas from the front of the stage back... the usual stand-up area is behind these. Well it seems because this was a combined performance/industry (Sony) night, the tables where still in place with only the back half reserved for the industry, so I was able to nab some spots right up the front of the stage. There was another hour and a quarter before the support act, Monique Brumby was due, so I spent time being Mr. Social Butterfly chatting to various fellow Colvin fans... my 'Get Folked' Shawn T-shirt had a few people intrigued. A SC loving friend, Adrianne, showed up before the start and with millisconds to spare fellow lister Alana and her friend Belinda arrived as Monique took the stage... always one for the dramatic entrance :) Monique did a nice, but shortish set which was warmly appreciated. Her album Thylacine has only been recently released even though recorded it over 18 months ago... presumably Sony sat on it due to the glut of new female artists that had hit the charts at that time. Monique puts a lot into her performances and was able backed by 'Maryanne' on acoustic guitar and bass. With only a short break, Shawn, Larry Klein and Stueart Smith hit the stage and immediately launched into a couple of songs from Steady On. We were only about 15' from the trio and it was almost a challenge to work out who to watch (well not really :), Larry wielding his seemingly oversize Gretch bass in his inimitable way, Stueart alternating between various Fenders strumming, picking, tapping his way to great effect or Shawn dead in front alterning between a couple of acoustics and a Fender. All amazing musicians... but then you knew that. Shawn was in fine voice despite a comment by her to the contrary at one point, and didn't look as tired as I would have expected as they had only flown in within the last 24 hours. During one spot of banter, Shawn said the Stueart was almost homicidal/psychotic by the end of the long flight... the LA-Sydney run is one of the longest non-stop routes you can do. :( During the the first verse of 'Facts about Jimmy' something suddenly happened to the sound of Larry's bass through the PA which caused Shawn to suddenly break off and call a halt to proceedings with a funny "Hold on just minute, what the heck was that" sort of comment. There was a brief conversation between the sound mixer and Shawn which had everyone amused and then she turned to Larry and then Stueart and continued on with the song from where they had left off as if nothing had happened. I didn't actually hear the grmelin as we were close enough to be hearing direct from their guitar amps as much from the overhead PAs. I'll leve the set list to Alana but it was great that she played quite a few from Steady On and Fat City... the version of Steady On itself really rocked... I think it was at the finale of this that Shawn and Stueart finished off the final chord by strumming each other's guitar. You could tell that they had all played with each other (you know what I mean) many times before and were very tight while still seeming spontaneous. It was great to be so close as you could see the visual communication between them so clearly... and at one point Shawn and Larry were literally leaning on each other... playing head to head. On a fashion angle, Shawn was a beautiful gold coloured (brochade?) jacket over a black top and I had to show considerable retraint in not calling out 'show us yer biceps' ;-). The set went all too fast and they quickly returned for an encore which included a Steve Earle? cover (from Cover Girl?) and finished with Diamonds. There were a few people who called out for Shotgun, including moi, when they first returned, but it seems they had a fixed set-list and were sticking to it... no complaints at this end though. I think the Shawn was on for like 90 minutes which of course went way too quickly, but I knew I would be seening her again the following night, so I treated this as an extended interval. I noticed at the end of the gig that there were microphones mounting in the ceiling pointing back to the audience and almost on cue the 'sound tech' arrived to remove them. So I asked him who he was recording this for and it turned out that he was in fact Paul Petran who is the producer for the ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) 'Sunday Concert' program and that he was going to play this concert sometime in Dec/Jan. :)))) On the subject of radio broadcasts, I caught the end :( of Shawn doing a live studio performance on one of the Melbourne radio stations (FOX-FM) on Thursday. The radio was playing downstairs at work and suddenly I could hear in the background 'Sonny Came Home' and thought "oh yeah, this should be being played a fair bit at the moment", but then realised that it was an uplugged version in the studio... agghhh! Unfortunately I can only handle listening to commercial jocks for about 3 mill-seconds before become homicidal/psychotic! [ Actually at the moment I am having to sit through our national entertainment? program 'Hey, Hey it's Saturday' as Shawn was scheduled to appear on it... just love MC's who think they are more talented/interesting/funnier than the performers... not!... gee I am sounding grumpy tonight :( ] PRINCE PATRICK: This gig I was going to be joined by net-friend Sherlyn who had driven down from Sydney that day (600 miles!) and another Shawn devotee, Derek. After a meal up in the trendy end of Smith St. we walked down to the PP and staked our claim at the front of the stage. Like the Conti gig, this was also a sell out although this crowd was more your regular pub giggers. Monique opened again to perhaps a less receptive; ie: usual noisy audience, which I found a bit pathetic as she is definately an up and coming coming talent and deserved, as all artists for that matter do, more respect. Shawn and the guys launched onto the stage to great applause and once again got down to business without delay... seemingly with a more relaxed feeling. Shawn introduced Wichita Skyline about "being stuck in the middle of nowhere and thinking you'll never get out" which inspired a heckler in the crowd to proclaim in a very distinctive Merkan accent "Hey, you've never been there" to which Shawn reply without a moments hesitation "Well fuck me" which had the crowd cheering support. [ Ahh, Shawn has just performed SCH on HHIS :)... I can now revert to normal programming ie: SET TV=OFF ] They played an almost identical set but perhaps a bit looser, but considering the much hotter temps in this venue, I can understand that. With sweat dripping from Larry's forehead, Shawn broke into a banter about them discussing beforehand whether it would be hot downunder in a real yokel voice saying "well do ya reckon it's gonna be hot down there", "yip I reckon so, yip I reckon it's gonna be hot" and "yip, it's hot down here"... much mirth. When Shawn began the first verse of SCH, she was temporarily (pleasantly) taken aback by the strong audience participation and initially seemed like she would let us do the honours, but then took the lead and continued on with the audience adding support. The set and encore finished way too soon of course and the crowd was very appreciative and gave them a rousing send-off. At this gig they had T-Shirts for sale which were a khaki green with the eyes from the front cover of AFSR on the front and the hand and match on the back. Shawn also came down later on to do some poster/cover signing and was ever gracious with all of the enthusiastic fans. Even though I could have dragged along a few CD covers and even T-shirts to get signed I felt she had given me more than enough over the years and I just spoke to her very briefly to thank her for coming down to Australia and also to say "hi" on behalf of the small-repairs listers. Actually what I said was "... and Casey will kill me if I don't say hi from the small-repairs list" to which she suddenly brightened up when she realised what I meant and said to say "hi to every one". :) From what she was saying to other people, I think will be seeing down here again soon... I can't wait! Cheers neill BTW: Shawn was wearing a slip over some pinstripe pants and so I got my 'bicep fix' this time... :) - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body.
