Shawn Colvin's Golden Repairs

ASK SHAWN COLVIN if her 1995 divorce inspired her two incendiary hits, "Sunny
Came Home" and "Get Out of This House," and you can hear the weary
exasperation mount in her voice.


This, of course, is the question that's dogged Colvin ever since the two
songs began flooding the Top 40 airwaves. "Sunny Came Home" describes a woman
who makes "a few small repairs" to a relationship by setting her house on
fire; "Get Out of This House" seems aimed at an unwanted mate. 

"It's not that simple," insisted Colvin, who performs Saturday at The Theater
at Madison Square Garden. "Get Out of This House" was "honestly, truly
inspired by buyers' remorse" over a house she'd bought in Austin, her latest
hometown, Colvin said. The catalyst for "Sunny Came Home" was a haunting
painting of a three-eyed woman with a Mona Lisa smile setting fire to a
prairie. The painting became the cover of Colvin's latest album, "A Few Small
Repairs." 

"Now, to go a little bit further," Colvin continued last week in a phone call
from Los Angeles. "I had intended to stay married forever. Part of me was
very melancholy and sad, part of me was somewhat disillusioned and bitter . .
. The sense of disillusionment was there, for various reasons." 

But that was before fate made some not-so-small repairs to Colvin's life. For
starters, she became engaged -- she and Austin photographer Mario Erwin will
tie the knot next month. The unpretentious but provocative new album became
her first gold-seller, with sales of more than 500,000, and received two
Grammy nominations (Colvin already had won one Grammy for her album "Steady
On" in 1990, and received two nominations for "Fat City" in 1993). 

What's more, Colvin duetted with James Taylor on "Yellow and Rose," a song on
his new album, "Hourglass." Her performance last month on the public
television program "Sessions at W. 54th St." was so successful it's being
re-broadcast Oct. 23 on WNET/13 and two days later on WLIW/21. And Colvin got
to tour over the summer with the all-women Lilith Fair. 

Suddenly the singer-songwriter found herself at the peak of her career at age
41, a quarter-century after she'd formed her first band. It's a position that
Colvin admitted to hungering for in "New Thing Now," a song on her new album
about the lures and pitfalls of the music industry. 

"I persevered, and I'm proud of that," Colvin said, her smooth voice
roughened to raw silk from performing the night before. But, she added: "I
also feel fortunate to have appreciated my career for what it was before this
happened. I have a very loyal constituency. It was okay if this was not going
to happen." 

The South Dakota-born Colvin built her constituency through constant club
gigs, often touring solo with her acoustic guitar. But it wasn't until the
mid-'80s that she became a songwriter. At that time, she was living in
Manhattan's East Village and was collaborating with John Leventhal (the pair
reunited for "Small Repairs," with Leventhal co-writing 10 of the album's 12
songs). "I loved songwriters, I was in awe of them," Colvin recalled. "But
singing is a very immediate gratification. Songwriting required a lot of work
on my part and I was lazy -- in terms of my mind I was lazy -- and insecure.
It was a big step for me to stick my neck out there and put my words out to
be judged." 

It's not a move she regrets. "It's the hardest one thing I've done," she
said, "but it's probably the most rewarding."

Yeah, it is on the aussie version, which would be good if I had realised
before I went and ordered it from the States! (D'OH!!!) And yes, the
reason I did that was because our CD prices are ridiculously high...
high enough to make airmail postage from the US worthwhile when buying a
couple of CDs. It only just occurred to me a while ago (during the What
I Get Paid For bonus track discussion) that our version of Cover Girl
could well have the Ol' 55 bonus track too...so I checked it out and
sure enough, there it was. My dilemma now: do I dish out another $30 to
get an album I already have for the sake of one extra song? Don't ya
just hate when that happens?!
