A personal message from Kelli got me to thinkin' Why don't we see what we can do as a group to get Sony to release a video compilation by Shawn. EVERYBODY has at least one of these on the market these days. I think it's time Sony put one by Shawn out there too. If I counted correctly, she has about 10 videos in the can now. Surely that's enough to fill a video tape. What do you think? Where do we write? Strength in numbers, combined with her current commercial and critical success might be enough to set Sony in action. Any thoughts??? (complete with all the ahs and ums, and the occasional editorial note from moi, just to keep you informed of the general mood of things....) - hope it's not too long Casey :) RW: Now on the show we=92re firing up the satellite for a chat with American singer/songwriter Shawn Colvin, who grew up in small town South Dakota, paid her dues and honed her skills in New York=92s Greenwich Village, and has just released her fourth studio album, A Few Small Repairs, which boasts the smash hit single Sunny Came Home. Shawn Colvin is in our Los Angeles studios and it=92s a great pleasure to be able to say hi there Shawn Colvin, how ya doing? SC: Gee I=92m great..... How are you? RW: I=92m terrific, now listen, we=92re playing Sunny Came Home here.... furiously; I guess we should say congratulations on having a huge hit on your hands. What does it feel like to have one of the hottest songs in the world? SC: Is it really one of the hottest songs in the *world*? RW: You betcha, it=92s the third most played song in the States at the moment, it=92s all over radio here and Europe and everywhere else... it=92= s a hit! SC: (sighs and shakes her head) It=92s a hit. It=92s great, it=92s great= .... it=92s my dream come true. (not looking entirely convinced of that, for some reason...) RW: It is a wonderful song, tell us about the inspiration behind the song, and exactly what you=92re saying in it. SC: Well, I don=92t know if you=92re gonna have an opportunity to show t= he album cover, but um, it was the 11th hour of the whole project, the music to the song Sunny Came Home was written, but I had failed utterly in writing the words and I chose an album cover painted by a friend of mine named Julie Speed, who lives in Austin Texas, where I live... RW: Yeah, we=92re looking at it now. SC: OK - so you=92ve got the woman holding the match with the fire in the background, and I thought, you know.... what could be more interesting than this picture, why don=92t I write a song about this woman, let=92s g= ive her a name, let=92s give her a story, and that=92s what I did. RW: It=92s a beautiful song and it=92s a wonderful album - your fourth album, does it get easier or harder for you Shawn? SC: It=92s gotten easier..... no question. Um, I=92ve always been a performer, I can sing and play live in front of anybody in just about any circumstance. The studio when I started out making records 7 or 8 years ago was weird to me, um, it was a chance to put everything under the microscope and that daunted me, um, and I think I=92ve learned.. I think I=92ve cracked it a little bit. I think I=92ve learned how to deal with the studio and we had a very, very good time making this record, it was fun, so it=92s getting easier definitely. RW: Hey this guitar playing style of yours, is it true you developed such strong hands, you can.... SC: (giggling and wagging her finger at the camera) I know what you=92re going to say.. RW: ... by serving icecream, that=92s the story, is it true or false Shaw= n Colvin? Come on, spill the beans... SC: (still laughing) You know, if you really, you know, if you wanna cut from Point A to Point... Triple Z..... then...... it=92s true! I mean, when I was 15 years old, I got my first job scooping icecream, and I did get a helluva forearm (shows off helluva forearm - wow, those muscles!!) as a result of it, but, um.... I don=92t think it really is....I don=92t think that=92s where my guitar style comes from, to tell = you the truth... honestly (wry smile, in case we=92re all really disappointed about that) RW: Hey listen, you=92re coming to Australia, what are we going to see when you hit the stage here? SC: What are you going to see? You=92re going to see, uhh... me, and my guitar player Steuart Smith (sly sideways glance like he=92s hiding just out of camera shot...) and a bass player named Larry Klein, and we=92re a trio and we make a lot of noise for 3 people... but not always!.... and we do a lot of songs from the new record and some old ones from the other 3 records that I made, and a couple of surprises, and we have a lot of fun up there, and uh, we=92re a good combo, so I=92m really excite= d to be coming over and.. showing... myself... (giggles) to you guys. =20 THE END... So that was it folks! Interspersed with bits and pieces of the Sunny video of course (which I *still* haven't seen in full...). I think Richard was a bit excited to be talking to the great one, he seems to be a pretty huge fan himself (and why wouldn't he be?!) The other thing I noticed (being one of those people that notices these things) is that when she said the point triple Z thing, she said the Australian 'zed' instead of the more common (for Americans) 'zee', which got me wondering if she's really that well versed on Aussie language-isms, and she did it just for our benefit...(after all, she did say she liked aussie slang in that article Neill posted) or do yanks say zed as well some times? Just curious... That's enough from me....
