I've heard the story at 3 of the 4 Shawn shows I've been to - she didn't tell it at the most recent show in Berkeley. The "You know it's over..." is actually part of the set-up for the story. Basically, as Shawn tells it, songwriters consider it to be a sign of weakness to write songs inspired by kids. "You and the Mona Lisa" as Kellie points out, inspired by Shawn's niece. So Shawn happened to be sitting back stage next to Lyle Lovett at one of these radio station Christmas shows when someone sang a song inspired by their child. Lyle turns to Shawn and says "Shawn if you ever have a kid. Don't write a f***ing song about it." I like this story a hell of a lot better than the whole Whichita Skyline bit, even though the Whichita story changes a lot more than this one does. I also like Shawn's "Slingblade" imitation. Uh-huh. According to a mailshot from 'One In Vermillion' the single has been cancelled. The reason given from Sony is that advanced orders would only get it into the top 60 and thus there was no point in releasing it. I've acquired a UK promo one track cd of the single which features the artwork that was to be used (flyers for the single were given out at the London and Glasgow shows). My belief (and that of a local record store) is that the single exists its now just a matter of working out how to get it off Sony. Any ideas? If I find time later (and if someone wants to hassle me to do it..) I'll write up the interview and post it to the list. It was pretty short - here's a synopsis: RW asked Shawn (who looked kinda tired) how she felt about having a worldwide hit with Sunny Came Home, to which she looked surprised and said "Is it a worldwide hit?" and then said something about it being her dream come true (which *almost*, and I could be wrong, sounded sarcastic...). He also asked her about the link b/w scooping icecream and her guitar playing, which she seems to think is a bit of an urban myth; about what we'd see when she tours here (she said she was looking forward to coming down and ".....showing myself to you..." - hmm, sounds interesting...); and whether or not making albums gets easier by the 4th one - apparently it does. Oh, and he also asked for the story about the inspiration behind Sunny. Well, my short term memory's rapidly failing on me, so maybe I will just have to write it up later... And again, for anyone who may be in Sydney when she's here (although I'm pretty darn sure I'm talking to myself here...) Shawn's doing an instore at the Pitt St Brashs on Wed Oct 1 at 12.30pm. I'll be there! ~ Kat ~ 2 weeks today till touchdown!! - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. I didn't hear it at her Harborlights concert >last month (I live near Boston). Jess, I live in Boston! How far are you out? I'm going to ask anyone else on the list who's heard this one to add or correct any details that I miss here...the show was awhile back... Okay, Shawn has a back-up vocalist who toured with her last spring, and also sang on "A Few Small Repairs". I can't remember this woman's name, but she has a beautiful voice, and blends very well with Shawn. Some of the vocals on "A Few Small Repairs" that I attributed to Shawn backing herself in the studio were, upon closer examination, this back-up singer that I'm talking about. She sings on "You and the Mona Lisa" and "Sunny Came Home", and "Get Out of This House" for sure if you want to look for her name. Anyway, Shawn was talking about how on this particular tour, there were three women in the band, including herself, and how nice it was to have those 'girl's night out' parties. The bass player, and this back-up vocalist made up the rest of the estrogen group. The three of them, along with the rest of the touring band had made it to see all of the movies that were nominated for Best Picture on Academy Awards night while the tour was taking place, before the Academy Awards Show was aired on t.v. Shawn was excited about this, being that she's a self-proclaimed "movie buff". So, on Academy Awards Night, the three women got together in Shawn's hotel room to watch the ceremony. They were gossiping about who they'd met, who they wanted to meet, and other stuff along those lines. Suddenly the camera panned out to some of the spectators in the Academy Awards audience. Shawn's back-up singer screeched and leapt from the bed and pointed at a woman on the screen...Shawn and her bass player asked, "What? What!?" The vocalist yelled, "That's my gynecologist! That's my f--ckin' gynecologist!" This of course surprised the bass player and Shawn herself. Of all the things that this woman could have yelled, this was the last one they'd expected to hear. For the rest of the evening, whenever the audience had calmed down or gotten really involved in one of Shawn's plaintive ballads, she would yell at the top of her lungs, "That's my f---ckin' gynecologist," and send her back-up vocalist running to the wings of the stage blushing violently...it was hilarious! Probably loses something in the telling, but the running gag had the crowd rolling all night long. Fun show! And during "Shotgun Down the Avalanche", Shawn kept breaking into "Slingblade" impersonations. That's all.
