Like you I've only been a member for a couple months. I've read you're posts and appreciated them. For me I joined the list to "hang" with others who are Shawn-fans. I really wasn't expecting the list to have 90% Shawn-content (or 70% or 40% for that matter). If it were like that, I'd probably get bored and unsubscribe. My expectations were simple -- to experience the "community" of other people who appreciate Shawn. This sentiment seems to be shared by others (Kat, Janel, and Jean) so I'm encouraged by that. I posted my agreement with eb (the now infamous thread) because I felt comfortable with this community and wanted to explore a "Socratic dialogue" and learn more about others on the list. And thinking back on it, I guess I have. BTW anyone, how long has this list been in existence? Does anyone know the number of current members? Kellie, I personally have never known anyone who's attended Berklee. I'm very impressed and am looking forward to future posts from you. Of course, there has also been more than a little bickering that accompanied that, too. But, that's ok ... it only makes sence that as a large group of people converse, there will eventually be conflicts. As long as they are handled with a little maturity and just a pinch of tact, we'll survive them all. First off, some have been asking how old the list is and how many people are currently subscribed. Well, the list has been here since early July of this year (I can't remember the exact date, check the website for that) and as of 9:35 CST on 9/12/97, there are 189 subscribers. This is a truly phenominal growth rate -- almost 200 people in less than 3 months. I think this is a real testament to Shawn's popularity. Next, I'd like to address the issue of the "official" Shawn mailing list operated by Plump Records. I do want to say that the post that was made suggesting that a new subscriber RUN from Small Repairs to the Plump list was not only rude, but totally unjustified. I have no problem with talking about the other list on Small Repairs or telling people how to subscribe to it. I do, however, think that it is inappropriate for someone to use *this* mailing list and *this* server to advocate that you leave *this* list and *this* server. However, I do stand by my policy of "almost anything can be discussed", and so while I think this was a really tacky thing to do, it's not like I won't allow others to read it and even support it, if they so choose. Also, if you'd like to join the Plump list ... I say, GO FOR IT!! There is absolutely no problem with that at all and I certainly have no sence of competition between the two lists. All I'm saying is that please don't just dump Small Repairs for the "official" list, because I will remind you that not only was Small Repairs the fist Shawn list, it is also supported by Shawn's management and so often benefits from info before *any* other list. Ok, now: the non-Shawn content problem that *still* seems to get arguments going. Once and for all I will say this: the list does NOT exsist solely to talk about Shawn and/or her music. Pretty much everything goes, except extreme personal attacks on other people. If you have any questions about this, please consult the FAQ on the website, or mail me personally. However, as is stated at the bottom of every post, we do ask that you use the "NSC:" tag in the subject of all posts that do not relate to Shawn or her music. You will notice that I broke this rule with this message. I did so because I want everyone to read this. So, I did not use the tag, hoping to avoid the kill file some people might have set up. And finally, as our good friend who advocated dropping this list and running for the Plump list mentioned, I did indeed post the original Diana message without the tag. I did this for two reason: 1) I felt it was important and that many people would be interested in it. 2) With "Princess Diana" in the subject line on the day after she died, I thought it would be pretty clear that the post was not about Shawn and/or her music. On a final note, since we do have so many "newbies" I think it would be a great idea if my beloved ;) co-owner, Jean, would post her survey to the list again. That way, those who weren't here the last time she did it, would have an easy chance to introduce themselves.
