I haven't heard this on the radio yet (although one has to *listen* to the radio to hear it...). But while we're talking about the song, I have to say that it's my least favorite on the album. I feel like the lyrics are a bit more contrived than I'm used to for Shawn, that whole "giving up the ghost" couplet just doesn't do much for me. Besides, I always thought "giving up the ghost" meant dying -- isn't that some line from Beetlejuice, or something? I could be missing the point of the lyric, but since I wasn't that fond of the song musically, perhaps I just haven't been open enough to it. Nevertheless, I do hope it's a big hit for Shawn -- she deserves it! NO Just kidding!! *Shawn* really... Hey people, Well, I'm happy to report that interest in Shawn certainly seems to be picking up down here in sunny old Sydney. By 8.30 this morning I'd already heard 2 separate mentions of her, they being: 1. Of particular interest to Aussies, Richard Wilkins said on Today this morning that Shawn would be on the show on Monday morning, although he didn't elaborate on that. I'm not sure if you Melbournians get the same Today we do, but if you do, watch it! Richard's segment is normally on sometime between 7.30 and 8am. I suspect he's a bit of a SC fan, as I remember he was quite excited when AFSR was released (only reason I knew it was out, actually) 2. I was flicking between radio stations in the car on my way to work and happened to come to MIX 106.5 just as they gave some caller tickets to Shawn's Basement show and a copy of AFSR as a consolation prize for guessing the "secret sound" wrong. Now for those of you (probably all of you) unfamiliar with MIX, it's generally more of a...well... Celine Dion type station, is probably the best way to put it. But they do occasionally surprise me, and they're one of only 2 Sydney stations that I've heard playing Sunny, so good on them! And I've never heard of anyone giving away tickets to any show at the Basement before... it's hardly the Sydney Entertainment Centre! This is Kat, reporting from Sydney - now back to you... SHAWN. =) I THINK 'COVER GIRL' HAS LOTS OF GOOD GUITAR MOMENTS...MY FAVORITE ALBUM OF SHAWN'S TO LISTEN TO IS 'LIVE 88'. I LIKE TO FOCUS ON WHAT'S HAPPENING WHEN IT'S JUST HER GUITAR AND VOICE. SHE HAS SUCH SKILL IN MAKING ONE FEEL AS IF THE INSTRUMENTS PLAYED ON HER STUDIO ALBUMS ARE ACTUALLY PRESENT DURING HER SOLO STUFF...I CAN HEAR IT EVEN THOUGH IT'S NOT THERE! THAT'S TALENT. I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO MEET SHAWN ONCE...AT THE GUTHRIE THEATER IN ST. PAUL...RUTHIE, A GIRL FROM MY BAND, WAS WITH ME. WE SANG TO HER AND SHE OFFERED US SOME OF THE CAKE SHE HAD IN HER DRESSING ROOM...(SHE WAS KIDDING.) SHE WAS GIGGLY AND FRIENDLY. VERY SWEET AND FUNNY. THE PICTURE OF THE THREE OF US IS CUTE. WHEN SHE'S ON, SHE'S ON. SHE CAN REALLY CAPTIVATE AN AUDIENCE. SHE'S BROUGHT ME TO THAT POINT ON MORE THAN ONE OCCASSION...AT THE SAME TIME, SHE CAN JUST CRACK YOU UP WITH HER SILLY STORIES AND ANECDOTES...PERSONALITY LADY FOR SURE. AND, THOUGH SOME PEOPLE DO, I DON'T THINK OF HER MUSIC AS DEPRESSING AT ALL. TO THE CONTRARY, SOME OF THE DARKER STUFF BRINGS ME MY LIGHT WHEN I GO THROUGH AN EXPERIENCE THAT REMINDS ME OF THE SONG. IT'S LIKE YOU SAID, THAT COMMON CONNECTION THROUGH LYRIC AND MUSIC THAT STRIKES A COMMON CHORD IN ALL OF US...THAT'S WHY I SEE SHAWN'S MUSIC AS SO POWERFUL...WE KNOW WHERE SHE'S COMING FROM...WE FEEL IT TOO. I WAS AT A LIVE SHOW WHEN SHE TOLD ABOUT THE MOTIVATION FOR "YOU AND ME AND THE MONA LISA". SHE WROTE IT FOR HER NIECE...I LIKED THAT. IT MADE ME GRIN...PART OF THE REASON WHY I LIKE IT SO MUCH. SHE SAID SOMETHING ABOUT THE SORRY STATE OF ONE'S CAREER WHEN ONE STARTS WRITING FOR THEIR CHILDREN OR YOUNGER RELATIVES...SOMETHING ABOUT WHEN ONE'S LOVE LIFE GETS TOO DIGUSTING TO LOOK AT ANYMORE, YOU HAVE TO WRITE FOR OTHER THINGS. SHE ALSO, AT THE SAME LIVE SHOW, SAID THAT THE "WICHITA SKYLINE" WAS ORIGINALLY THE "TOKYO SKYLINE" BECAUSE TOKYO WAS THE ONLY OTHER PLACE NAME THAT HAD THE SAME RING TO IT...FUNNY LADY...GREAT PERFORMER! PLEASE FILL ME IN ON ANYTHING I'VE MISSED ON THIS LIST RECENTLY.
