It was a beautiful, hot summer day on August 31st, perfect for an afternoon with our hero. We had 5th row seats, which (of course?) meant we were actually in the third row! Big bonus. Duncan Sheik was the opening act and he did what most opening acts do, which is to say he built up the anticipation for Shawn... Okay, here's the thing, he wasn't very good. He has no stage presence, the eyes closed thing gets annoying after a couple of songs. He played every song at virtually the same pace, ponderous. This even included Barely Breathing, which is one of his very few up tempo songs from the CD. Now, on to better things, Shawn was just great. She was wearing black jeans and a blue camouflage tank top. The band was in a great mood, and all three played together like the old friends they are. We received a special treat when Shawn brought out Emmylou Harris, who did a striking version of a Steve Earle song, Goodbye. It was neat to watch Shawn watch Emmylou, she was obviously a big influence on Shawn. Particular highlights were: The Facts About Jimmy; where she seemed to be totally into it, the song and Shawn carrying each other to transcendence. Stuert added alot of nice guitar work, as well. Viva Las Vegas; They had a lot of fun on this one. Shawn did a lot of Elvis steps, it was great. Wichita Skyline; with the Wichita Lineman break. Trouble; one of Shawn's best songs, the whole band was so together on this one. Steady On; it was great to hear this great old song. Killing the Blues; Shawn just plain nailed this song, she had us mesmerized. Diamond in the Rough; great, great version. Emmylou added alot on back up, stuert had a blazing solo. All in all, a great show and a wonderful day. Setlist: 1. Kill the Messenger 2. Another Long One 3. Get Out of This House 4. The Facts About Jimmy 5. You and the Mona Lisa 6. Window to the World 7. I'm amazed at the Americans shown on television that are crying and hysterically grieving. We as a country need to realize that this celebrity-worship we practice is not healthy. IMHO, that sort of emotion should be reserved for the loss of family, friends, hell even pets ... but not someone who the average person has never even met. Just so you know I'm not an ogre - I shed a tear watching the kids walk behind the casket. It reminded me of my father's death and the huge vacuum it left in our family. You wouldn't think it would be the case, but the death of a parent is equally devastating to a 25 year-old. Seven years later (I'm 32 now) and I still regard it as the most critical moment of my life. - -- Greg Welker welkerg@uakron.edu CBA Computer Labs The University of Akron - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. I have a question for everyone... do you like Shawn best in solo acoustic situations, with the "trio", or with the band? Here's my take: 1. The Trio. My favorite has to be the trio, because the chemistry between the three of them is amazing. The songs sound great... the word "fuller" comes to mind, but I don't know enough about music to tell you why I really feel this way. 2. The Band. I have similar feelings about the band, but Shawn really doesn't need the rest of the band. Just give me the trio. 3. Solo. My first Shawn show was a solo acoustic show, and she was great. She really draws the audience in, and this is something I expected to disappear with the band and the trio -- it doesn't, so there's no advantage here as far as solo shows go. Frankly, I'm a bit tired of the acoustic guitar bit, and my ears need a bit more to keep them amused. Shawn also has the tendency to over-emote. Overall, I think having to play with other people and stay with the rhythm is good for Shawn. I just heard her on the radio (on "Alice" here in the Bay Area), and although she was great, I've heard it before. Also, her voice has been getting worse, and the sound from the band tends to hide that a bit. For any of you who want to see all the lovely things the Basement says about "the singer's singer" Shawn, eg. "Her guitar playing is strikingly innovative, her voice an instrument of rare beauty, her songs full of honesty, irony and the gamut of undiluted personal experience" and see a pic that I at least haven't seen before, check out this month's gig guide at the Basement's web site at http://www.soulpacific.com.au/basement/thismonth.html (she's right at the bottom of the page, being on at the end of the month and all...) Trivia for the day: Did you all know she's Matthew Perry's favourite singer? I knew there was a reason why I like Chandler the best... :) *20* days to go... ~ Kat ~ - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body.
