Mimi, I think you said fairly perfectly what I was feeling and thinking. And although this is a totally irrelevant topic for this list, I suspect that many of you, like me, have lost enthusiasm for most other things this week and need someone to express their feelings to. I hope you all don't mind if I do that here. I was surprised how upset I was about Diana's death, like many people it would seem. The only time I've taken any close interest in her life was her marriage (I was young - we watched it at school and just knew it was something to be excited about) and the interview she gave in 1995. I had been fairly indifferent to her before that, as I never really understood the saturation coverage she was given by the media. Australia being a Commonwealth country, she's always been hugely popular here, although most of us aren't really royalists. I watched the interview only because I wanted to hear her speak for herself, and in so doing, I gained a lot of respect for her - everything she was up against and had been through, and the ways she handled it all, and turned it round to create some good for others. I am hoping that the phenomenal global reaction to her death will continue on, and that the causes she fought to support, and the qualities she possessed will rub off on all of us. If we were all a little more like Diana in that we loved all others as ourselves, and were not afraid to show it, this world would surely be a happier place. Perhaps that's even why she was taken so tragically and so young. Nothing happens without a reason, however hard that reason may be to fathom. And I do think we all need to examine our attitudes towards the famous and learn where to draw the line between their public and private lives. We are the ones who drive the market for the media and not until our demands change will the media take any responsibility in changing the way they operate. May Diana rest in peace, her family be comforted in their grieving, and may we all never forget what we have learned from her life and death. She will be missed.
