Jaggard" Subject: [s-r] Lilith Fair - Vancouver... last show! So, tonight I saw the final instalment of the Lilith Fair Tour. The headliners were Lisa Loeb, Paula Cole, Shawn Colvin, Indigo Girls, and Sarah McLachlan, of course. (Also Aabra Moore, although not a headliner and she was on the second stage, is one of my current fave performers.) Lisa Loeb was the first main stager, and where most people had been sitting down before, a lot tried to stand up. This brought on much complaining from the sitters, so Lisa tried to be a 'peacemaker' ... I was quite impressed by her ability to get almost everybody to sit down. Except for a group of people right up front, and they didn't have room to sit... :) She put on a good show, lots of people sang along, (me included! Luckily, it's loud, so you can't hear me..) And I finally realized who (in looks, at least) she reminds me of -- Daphne, from Frasier, only with glasses. Go fig. :) Also, she had Shawn Colvin come out for a song, along with the Indigo Girls violin player. Way cool! After Lisa, there were a couple second stage performances (including Aabra Moore, who did a great "Four Leaf Clover") and then Paula Cole came on. I've *never* seen a performer with so much energy. This woman literally bounced all over the place! She was wearing an outfit I rather liked, too... ;) She got *really* into her singing, you could definetly tell she was enjoying herself hugely. And I got a slightly different perspective on some of the songs I had heard before... hearing her do them live puts different feelings associated with each song. Nifty. :) But she was very bouncy. :) Then came Shawn, who was fantastic. I sang along, of course. Damned if I can remeber the playlist, all I remember was Sunny Came Home being the last one, and Get Out Of This House being the first. :) Her hair is a lot shorter and redder than I was expecting. :) The Sunny video, she's got sort of a blonde bob... of course, I keep forgetting that these videos were taped a while ago. Doy. :) Anyhoo, everyone around me was really enjoying themselves, too. I was fairly up close to the front, about 20 feet away, and to the right. By the time Shawn came out, it was getting squishy. You really got to know your neighbour! After Shawn came the Indigo Girls -- the highlight of the concert for me. At one point, they had Shawn, Lisa, Paula and Sarah out on stage singing with them. I got my friend to put me up on his shoulders for this part, so I could see better. (I'm rather short, I generally have to look around peoples shoulders to see the stage.) Anyhoo, they did a fantastic set, and everybody around was *really* enjoying themselves. There were huge grins on everybodies face, mine included. :) And Finally, Sarah came out. She's even better live than on her CD's, and I always thought her CD's were damn good. I was close enough that I could see tears on her cheeks when she talked about this being the last show of the Lilith Fair, and she thanked the audience for helping make her dream come true... (Aww!) It was one of those speeches that makes you smile. :) Like the other shows, she sang Ice Cream for the encore, and I think the audience sang more than her. :) And then they brought all the performers out, and did Big Yellow Taxi. That was also darn cool. Each performer sang a different part of it. :) All in all, it was a fantastic Grad present. (Yes, I got the tickets as a gift.. I sure as hell couldn't afford $50!) :) The HMV tent also handed out free cassette tapes with a lot of the second stage artists (Alisha's Attic, September 67, Wild Straberries, Cinnamon) on it, called "Lilith Fair, Music for the Ride" ... so, since I'm currently broke, and I've got a few friends who wanted to go, but couldn't, I grabbed 6 tapes. :) (Yeah, my pockets were bulging...) :) And I got a catalogue of Nettwerk merchandise, and the Sarah McLachlan/Lilith Fair catalogue... I may have to buy a t-shirt, once I have the money. :) Okay, it's 2:30am, I'm exhausted, and I've gotta sleep. I have to be up in... eek! 4 and a half hours, to go to work. Oh yeah, thats gonna be fun. :) Donna Donna M. Shawn opened with "Kill The Messenger," followed by "The Facts About Jimmy," "You and the Mona Lisa," "Sunny Came Home," and "Diamond In The Rough." Shawn's segment was 30 minutes long and Keb' Mo's segment was 30 minutes long. The show was interrupted here in West Virginia due to a pledge drive, but I don't think they left anything out, they just delayed it until after the pledge drive. Sorry to tell you, but thought you should know. Plus, you can keep an eye on the TV Guide and this list for the repeat date. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. BigHAIR here... In a message dated 97-08-25 05:17:44 EDT, you write: << Four questions that I know if I can't find answers for here, I'll never find answers for:>> I may be able to help ya! << Which Bruce Hornsby album has Shawn on it? As I recall she does some duets and maybe a lead vocal with him.>> The only duet that i know of with Bruce and Shawn is the song "Lost Soul" which appears on the 1990 RCA release, "A Night Out On the Town." A very good song. And, if you are REALLY into shawn, you may want to pick up Bruce's live video, also called "A Night Out On the Town." She only appears for one song, but if you like Bruce, it is worth it. (Hey Kelly--you are the Hornsby Guru... are there any other duets with Shawn that we don't know about?") << Also, last spring (the Small Repairs Tour) she sang a Prince song...something about a cove. What was the name of it?>> Well... as i was cleaning my room recently (yes, J and SheLL, i ACTUALLY got around to it!) I found the set list that i had written down for the Small Repairs Show i saw in Austin.... Shawn did a most excellent cover of the Prince (the Artist, the Purple One, or whatever the heck he is these days...) song Holy River. It's on his latest release if i am not mistaken, and I think he has done a video for this which is on VH-1... because of this, i remember reading somewhere, that Shawn would probably stop doing this song, since it has been officially released and "no longer cool" to do. Too bad for us. It was very very very good. << I saw a double CD benefiting (I think) a homeless project. Had Shawn and Freedy and some others on it. Are the songs just the normal versions or are they live or specially recorded?>> I think the compilation CD you are referring to is the Shelter CD from Putumayo World Music label. For those of you who may not have come across it, It is called Shelter: The Best of Contemporary Singer-Songwriters. (CD Catalog number: PUTU115-2 - M115-2) It is a two volume set featuring great songs by 28 artists including Mary-Chapin Carpenter, Sarah McLachlan, Nanci Griffith, Shawn, John Gorka, Freedy Johnston, David Wilcox and others. $2 from the sale of each CD set, and $1 from each cassette set will go to the National Coalition of the Homeless. (hmmm, did that sound like a commercial just now?) I am not totally sure, but i think shawn's track is same version of Round of Blues that appears on Fat City... but double check to be sure. If you want to know more.. check out their website at http://www.putumayo.com or email them: putumayowm@aol.com. <> I think perhaps these lyrics have baffled everyone.... The editors of the Shawn Fanzine, One in Vermillion, took a stab at it, and didn't get very far.... it doesn't appear in the songbook, so i guess we are on our own.... (Maybe this list should take a stab at it? Any interest?) I know that it is a pretty cynical song in general... but that's about it. Just do what i do, and make the lyrics whatever you want. Heh, heh... much more fun that way. :) Well, i hope that helps.... and hey... sorry about your Lilith experience.... trust me when i say... i know your pain! :) << I had already seen Shawn twice this summer (while I was back home in Vermont, I did a road trip around New England to see her) and enjoyed both shows. [Did I ever write reviews for those shows? And is it too late?>> nope and nope! Sorry to tell you all who caught it on TV that they cut out at least half of the songs that she performed that night. In addition to the songs aired on Saturday night she did everything on AFSR minus 84000 Different Delusions and Nothin on Me. She also did Polaroids and her Sling Blade version of Shotgun Down the Avalance -- that was a treat. The show that they aired was wonderful, but I have to say that being at the taping beat watching on TV. David Crosby: To a degree. Obviously, I'm happy as I can possibly be that Shawn Colvin somehow busted through and got a hit. She's one of my favorite singer/songwriters. She opened for Crosby, Stills & Nash and we all fell in love with her. Nash and I have gone and sung with her, I've sung on her records. . . she's a close friend. Interviewer: She has a mesmerizing voice. David Crosby: We were just so happy to see a real singer-songwriter break through. That's exactly what should happen and almost never does. Usually, the radio formats just exclude that kind of stuff. Cool Huh. It seems Shawn's peers are even more excited than she is!
