For Mike & those others of you who are also wondering where the heck I'm counting down Shawn's ETA from (or don't really care but wish I'd stop doing it :)), I'll be at both shows at The Basement in Sydney, in the merry old land of Oz. Hence my excitement, since Shawn doesn't make it down here all that often... I'd love to be at the New Haven show too, but it's a just a *little* further than even I'm willing to travel (actually I would if I were very rich, but alas, I'm not) Kat :) P.S. only 43 days now ;) - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. It poured ( and I mean poured ! ) rain all afternnon, but this did not stop what Shawn described as a 'hearty batch' of lawn people from sticking it out. Depsite the rain, spirits were really high. I was a little disappointed in the audience's reception of Shawn. She was on too early (IMHO) and people were not yet settled in to do some serious listening. People jusr did not seem to benearly as into it as they should have been, BUT she was amazing ! Her between songs chatter was limited, which as a disappointment because I always enjoy that. She was wearing black pants and a black sweater with black boots ( I think this was her most recent Letterman appearance outfit) I do not have a set list, but what I remember is as follows: Kill the Messenger ( fitting opener..' Jane it sure looks like rain, these Canadian plains....' ) and in no particular order... Get out of this House Trouble You andthe Mona Lisa Wichita Skyline Steady On Sunny Came On Shawn seems to have take off after her set because she was not there for any of the ensemble numbers. Maybe she had to continue her video shooting ( You and the Mona Lisa) Indigo Gilrs had a bit of trouble getting the crowd going. Every other time I have seen them they stop singing during at least one of their songs and let the crowd carry it. They did not do this , but they seemed to want to try in Least Complicated - the crowd was just not singing. They did start to sing on Galileo. Sarah and Jewel came out for four part harmony on The Water is Wide- beautiful ! Everyone (but Shawn : ( ) came out for Closer to Fine. You have to love Emily and Amy - they were calling out all of the performers to sing on this one, including the second stage local acts that were not going to come out. Jewel did some yodelling in this (IMHO this was the highlight of Jewel's performance) and Meredith Brooks seemed to forget her line ! Sarah was incredible. She opened with Hold On, then did a couple of other songs from Fumbling Towards Ecstasy . Then she did new stuff.. Angel, Building a Mystery, Witness. She did Ice Cream as an encore, at which point it became clear just how much of a Sarah crowd this was. She let the audience take an entire verse and they did so without missing a beat. Last song of the night was Joni Mitchell's Big Yellow Taxi with everyone singing and playing. There were a few problems with mic's cutting out, but it was still incredible. I am now trying to convince myself that I can afford the exorbitant scalper's price I wouldhave to pay to go again today.... - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. Hi all: I'm a big Shawn Colvin and All My Children fan. Anyone else noticed that Shawn seems to be playing quite often in the background whenever there is a scene at the bar/grill Holidays or at the local coffee shop? I love it. Anyway, I was watching the 8/5/97 show and they featured a song that I have since learned was "Wounded Heart" by Kati Mac, in a great montage scene. I immediately had to have the song. I had no clue who it was. I managed to make a cassette copy, which left every record store clerk just scratching their heads. I managed to surf the web and found a chat page for AMC. Someone there was kind enough to e-mail me the name of the song and artist after about a week. Now, I'm in the process of finding a cd or someting by Kati Mac with that song. Any of you familiar with her work? All I've heard is the one song so far. Thought this might be a good place to ask the question. Well, I'm heading back to the stereo, where I have all of Shawn's CDs on the changer, playing all the songs in random order for hours at a time. What a nice way to spend a Saturday morning. I don't know... I tend to agree with the general idea though. I have had so much luck getting to meet and talk to my musical idols lately. And I can't explain it other than I just *really* wanted to... and everytime I talk to one of them I forget to say the one thing I really wanted to say. There's never a good way to express the amount of admiration I have for Shawn or others of her caliber. So you just shake their hands, and look into their eyes, and hope they know... I remember when I went to see Mary Chapin Carpenter... as I was getting ready for the show, I was looking through my closet and thinking "What should I wear to meet Chapin?" I had no idea how I was going to talk to her, but I really believed that I would. And I did. And there are probably bigger Chapin fans out there than me... there are way more die-hard Shawn fans out there than me, people who have worshipped her from the first note of Steady On... same thing with the Indigos... but, for some reason, the first time I saw Chapin, I met her. The first time I saw Shawn, I met her. And the same with Amy and Emily. I feel kinda guilty because I know that is just too lucky. But I am a True Believer. :) > When folks line up near the performers' get-away vehicles, > other true believers and I scoff at the mixture of > pitiful items non-believers bring to have signed.... So true! It was sad when I saw Shawn do an outdoor show in Austin and teeny bopper types who had never heard of her were lining up to get their drink holders signed, saying "Hey lady, would you sign this..." But maybe they are big fans now, so... it's all good. :) > concentrating your efforts at smaller towns and clubs > is always more effective. I traveled 100 miles. > That is a short distance for true-believer-travel. True again... it's always easier to meet folks at small venues. And the show is usually much different than the big venue shows. 100 miles is nothin... right Jean??? :) > As I ready myself to meet up with friends for the last > Lilith Fair venue in Vancouver, I will not expect to > get my True Believer memorablia signed that I hand-carry > across the country and into Canada... but I will be prepared! Oooohhh the last night of Lilith Fair... I'm jealous. :) That's going to be a blast!! Make sure you talk to Sarah and thank her for such a great tour! ~~Janel~~ - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. It has taken me a few days to force myself to sit down and write this... a review of the Lilith show in Scranton, PA at Montage Mountain. Ya know... ya have some good days, and some bad. :) Pittsburgh was good. Scranton was BAD. VERY. LOL.... First let me say that I'm not talking about the music. The performers all put on really good shows... the ones that I saw anyway because I happened to be stuck in ten miles of traffic and missed the first three acts!! Montage Mountain has got to be THE WORST venue I have ever seen in my life. I will NEVER go back. The access was horrible - one way in, one way out, on back country roads. The parking lot was filled two hours before the doors opened and they were making people park five miles away!! The name of the place was accurate - it was a frikkin mountain, and those poor people were hiking up it in 90 degree heat. Miserable!! I just refused to do it. After sitting in traffic for almost 2 hours, there was NO WAY I was going to walk five miles uphill and miss Shawn!! So I drove straight up to the gate and BS'd the security guard to let me into the musicians parking. Whew!! Once inside, Lisa Loeb was finishing up her set, which means I MISSED PATTY!!!! And she was on the main stage. :( Jean (BigHAIR) saw her and said that she fairly rocked. Of course. That was not a happy moment for me... but I went to see Jean more than anything, because I knew nothing could top the previous night's experience in Pittsburgh. Sooo... I saw Jean. For 10 minutes!!! Then Shawn came on, and Jean had to go back to her seat and my tickets were lawn so I couldn't go with her. And the guy who was supposed to get me a backstage pass couldn't get one. Nobody could!! The security was SO tight it sucked... So there I was... lawn seats... which amounted to "mud slide" seats... all alone... Shawn's set about to start, and it started to POUR!!!! There was no way I was going to venture into the mud pit from hell, so I went under a pavilion and "listened" to Shawn, without being able to see. While I was there, I ran into Josh, the violinist from the Indigo Girls. He was trying to get passes for two of his friends that came to the show and he couldn't. He ended up smuggling them in with "Local Crew" t-shirts. So I just hung around the backstage security guard until Shawn finished her set. About five people that I had met in Pittsburgh came by and said hello. But without a pass, I wasn't going anywhere. Finally, Steuart Smith came by and said hi and asked me if I knew how to get backstage passes. RIGHT!! And why would I be standing HERE Steuart?? Anyway, he couldn't get his people backstage either... I said "I think there's a stage entrance down that way..." And he said "Let's go check it out." So I just walked with him right down to the stage and security man didn't bust me that time. :) Again, whew!! So I got to watch the Indigos, Jewel, Sheryl Crow, and Sarah from the stage. But I couldn't walk freely between the stage and the dressing rooms like I could in Pittsburgh because the security was so tight, I would have gotten tossed without a pass. So I just sat my butt down and watched the show. I would have much rather been sitting with Jean in the audience, but I couldn't get into that section. Silly, huh?? I could get ON stage, but I couldn't get into Jean's section to sit with her. So I sent her a note to her seat saying "Don't leave without me! Meet me at my truck after Sarah's done..." Well, it was just the way that day went.... it was a totally fitting screwed up ending to a totally screwed up day. Jean's friends were grouchy because of getting soaked in the rain and they dragged her away before we could meet. Do any of you realize how FAR Scranton, Pennsyl-fukn-vania is??? Jean drove about 8 hours to this show, and I drove 6. And we saw each other for TEN MINUTES!!!! It was NOT a good day, to say the least. Oh well, can't win 'em all. But all of that aside... making the best of a bad situation... the music was great! A couple of the highlights for me were Shawn and Steuart doing "the swim" while dancing to "Every Day is a Winding Road." And Shawn did a duet with Sheryl, "Do Right Woman," and THAT was beautiful... and I got to have a nice conversation with Sarah McLachlan. She's such a sweetheart. AND... now Jean feels bad for ditchin me after the show so she's gonna make it up to me with free drinks tonight... it's all good... :) POOR JENA!! You drove further than me baybay... we'll have our own Lilith Fair tonight and start it off with Patty in the CD player. Loud!! And we'll have no rain, no mud, no grouchy friends... And NO SECURITY GUARDS!! :) ~~~Janel~~~ - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body.
