Three words: Wow....... Wow....... WOW. As many of you witness from my e-mail address, I have a "slight" weakness for the Truly Amazing Patty Griffin. The tone for the day was set when the first musical note of my Lilith experience was Patty belting out "Poor Man's House" as I walked into the venue. And the fun was just beginning... Pittsburgh had three stages. Sheryl Crow got added late, so Patty Griffin was bumped to the second stage. That was sad for me, but at least they let her play on both small stages, so I got to see her twice. And she ROCKED... hard. One of the highlights of the day for me was looking out over a packed, sold out crowd, and seeing every gaze fixed on Patty in awe. I gleefully answered all the puzzled folks asking "WHO is that?!" Okay... enough Patty adoration... the rest of the line-up went like this: SHAWN COLVIN LISA LOEB .... (Second stage) SARAH MCLACHLAN JEWEL SHERYL CROW INDIGO GIRLS Does that not just make you smile?? What a great bunch of people, and a great musical event... everyone was excellent. I had the opportunity to be backstage and I was having a Coke with "the Truly Amazing Patty Griffin" when I heard the first strains of Our Hero, SHAWN!! She opened with Kill the Messenger... strange choice I thought because of the crowd and the atmosphere, and I admit I didn't rush down to catch that one. Next she played Get Out of This House and the crowd started getting into it. When I walked down to the stage, all the other Lilith performers were standing in the sound area watching Our Hero. For the fashion conscious... Shawn was wearing a blue and white plaid (short) skirt, kind of like a kilt, a white t-shirt, and a big pair of black combat boots. And she was lookin all kindsa good. So I'm standing on the stage watching this crowd, most of whom know nothing but "Sunny," and then watching the other performers around me watching Shawn. What an interesting contrast. Emily Saliers and Amy Ray from the Indigos were standing there, Sarah, Lisa, Sheryl... ALL watching Shawn, and singing along. That made me smile. After "Get Out" she did Mona Lisa, and Emily Saliers turned at one point and said "she's so good." Yes, she is...YAY SHAWN!! The rest of her set was: Window to the World, Wichita Skyline, Facts About Jimmy, I want it Back, Sunny Came Home. It was all good, the trio was in fine form, but I would have liked to have seen Diamond in the Rough, or maybe Another Long One. I think Facts About Jimmy is a great song, but I don't think it was right for that crowd or that setting. ANYWAY... it was still great to see Our Hero in action and to watch her receive the well deserved admiration of her peers. And seeing Amy Ray dancing to I Want it Back... that was worth the price of admission right there. Next up... SARAH. Whew.... what can ya say??? Sarah McLachlan is a genius. She orchestrated the whole deal, sat on stage and watched every other performance, did her own set beautifully, and never showed one sign of stress. A huge smile was plastered across her face all day. She was having a great time! And looking mighty fine as well... I LOVE the short hair!! I didn't write down a set list for Sarah, but I know she did Witness from the new CD, next to last was Building a Mystery, and she finished with Posession. She was singing beautifully (of course!) and the crowd was really into her... I could see the first ten rows singing along, as we all were backstage too. Next Up... JEWEL. Okay, okay... it's no big surprise that I am not the world's biggest Jewel fan.... I tried to give her another chance though. I talked to her a bit in between Shawn and Sarah's sets, but she was really quiet and tended to keep to herself most of the day. BUT... when she got on stage, she was anything but quiet. She rocked the place out. At first, nobody else was on stage watching, but after she got into it a little bit, everyone else started showing up. The Indigos came out of their dressing room, Sheryl was there (taking pictures all day), and Shawn came down and watched too. The best part of Jewel's deal was a Patti Smith cover, Dancing Barefoot (i think??). It rocked, rocked, rocked. Jerry Marotta, drummer from the Indigos, and Amy Ray were standing beside me and I wish I had a video camera because they were hysterical, bobbing their heads in time to the music, totally in sync, and totally unaware that they were doing it. Too funny. On Jewel's big climactic finish, she got added drama "with a little help from God." (her words.) It started POURING down rain... hard rain... sideways rain. It blew across the stage and the wind was whipping through her hair as she finished... that was a great view from where I was standing, but to the people out on the lawn, not so much. Everyone got soaked. So there was about a one hour delay in between Jewel and Sheryl while they tried to wait out the rain. All the performers were backstage watching the crowd get drenched and saying "these people rock." They really were a die hard crowd, I don't think the rain made one person leave and the performers were all very impressed and grateful. I was taking refuge from the rain with Larry Klein and Shawn in her dressing room. Yesterday was the first time I had the pleasure of meeting Larry and Stuart. Both very nice guys, very sincere and sweet. After a little while, everyone was in the hallway outside of the dressing rooms. Sheryl was up next, and she said "I should just go out in a shower cap." Shawn chimed in with the suggestion that Sheryl could borrow her flippers. No doubt, she had a set of yellow rubber flippers *with* her. She went to the bus and got this huge gym bag and pulled out her fins, a swimming cap and goggles. Sheryl suited up and did ballerina poses while everyone laughed and took pictures. When the time came for her set, she marched out on stage like that and did her whole first song, flippers and all. The crowd loved it. Then Shawn ran out and took the fins off and gave her her cowboy boots back. Cute. cute. cute... And Sheryl ROCKED. I had seen her before, but this time I was even more impressed. But I think it may have had more to do with the fact that she was a lovely person. Funny, pleasant, friendly, AND beautiful. She put on a good show.... we were all dancing on stage. At one point Shawn and I were dancing and she realized that she could be seen by the audience, so she walked further backstage about 10 feet and just cut loose. I love it... Next up... THE INDIGO GIRLS!!!!!! Again, what can I say?? BRILLIANT. Emily Saliers is also a genius, and Amy was just rockin out as usual. The crowd had been SOAKED for over 3 hours by this point and showed no signs of thinning out at all!!! Everyone was on their feet, dancing, singing, it was a huge party, on stage and off. By this point I was having too much fun to write down a set list, but I do remember Galileo, Get out the Map, Shame on You (with Brown Eyed Girl stuck in the middle), The Power of Two, and Chickenman. They brought Sheryl out to play the accordian on one song. And later in the set they brought out Sarah and Jewel to do some four part harmony. It was beautiful and I was standing inches from Shawn, watching in awe, and singing along. Wow... what a sweet moment. The big finale... CLOSER TO FINE. A party as usual, the crowd on their feet and TOTALLY into it, and everyone was out on stage. Amy started it off, Shawn did the next verse, Jewel did the "four years prostrate to the higher mind" verse, Lisa Loeb did the "twice as cloudy as I was the night before" verse, Sara Lee played the penny whistle, Jerry Marotta got out from behind the drum kit and sang with all the girls (in a dress!) and Jewel yodeled. No doubt... it was hysterical, and a total blast!! So... my summary.... LILITH ROCKS!!!! If any of you have a chance to see one of the dates with the Indigo Girls, DO IT! They are so much fun, and really put the icing on the cake of a perfect day for me!! ~~~Janel~~~ - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body.
