It seems to be especially those who quote Steady On as a favourite album. What does everyone else think? I'd agree it sounds different but isn't that just what artists who progress do? Would anyone else agree that if you had to pinpoint one way in which her sound has changed over the years is that the folk/country tinge has almost disappeared? SC records used to be filed under C&W in this country but now in Rock and Pop. Is that significant? It would be difficult imagining her recording some of Steady On now. My own point of view is that she has just grown in ambition, stature and ability. That might sound brown nosey but it's really not meant to. She's just a talented woman who keeps stretching herself, with the arguable exception of Cover Girl. Anyway hope you're all doing well. August 4, '97 G.Love and Special Sauce opened, playing a rockabilly, rap, Mississippi blues kind of thing...played for about an hour to a half full house. The house filled up by 8:00, I believe, in anticipation of Colvin's appearance. Shawn started just a few minutes after 8:00...casually walking on stage with Larry Klein and Stewart (Smith...?)...no drums. They played together very well, even though Stewart, the electric guitarist, was too loud at the beginning. He and Shawn complained to the sound engineer to turn up Shawn's guitar. This didn't really solve the problem and eventually I got used to hearing more electric and less acoustic guitar. Stewart's a great player...exacting, very articulate and clean. Stewart played Fender Stratocasters all night with stock and non-stock electronics...used a Fender amp and a bazillion effect pedals. I've enjoyed listening to Larry Klein for years with Joni Mitchell...I was pleasantly surprised to see him accompanying Shawn. Larry played a Gretsch hollow body electric all night long through a Galien Kruger of some sort...weird, but good tone. I can't think of anyone better ( maybe Pino Palladino...?) to accompany Shawn. Shawn is also an accomplished guitarist, reproducing on stage most of what is on the recording. She changed tunings quickly and obviously has a fine ear. I would like to hear Shawn accompanying herself with acoustic only... Shawn seems at ease on stage and willing to take chances...making jokes with the audience ( the evening's magic word, supplied by Larry's pocket thesaurus, was 'clitoris'...) carrying on inside jokes with Larry and Stewart, doing some synchronized (hilarious) dance moves with Larry while Stewart got down on a solo during 'Viva Las Vegas'...? She joked with the audience segregating us into 'the seat people' and 'the lawn people'...it was warm and friendly. The music was performed wonderfully and with much heart. I sat front row center and was able to look into the eyes of the performers...it was rewarding for me to watch Shawn get lost as she sang her songs....(Jimmy, Wichita Skyline, Get Out Of This House, in particular...) It seemed like she went away while singing and came back near the end of the song. It was a great show...and my first opportunity to see Shawn Colvin live....she was marvelous! I hope she's around for a long time. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. Her guitar is outstanding as is her selection of some of the most outstanding musicians I have been hono(u)red to witness. But do remember they also choose to work with Shawn, and, according to recent quotes love every minute. AFSR was an initial dissappointment to me, but now my favo(u)rite album after Live 88. As Shawn mentioned at a recent concert "They'd grown older too". Everybody matures, Shawn has in her music. Probably a natural progression. I've matured in a different way. (Always feel 2 years old when I see or listen to Shawn) Still, however old or young I feel, I seem to be going in the same direction as Shawn. If I am maturing inversely, then to paraphrase an old English band : "Hope I die before I get (too) young" - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. "Shotgun Down The Avalanche" will always be my absolute favorite Shawn song. I had a little, tiny, itty-bitty bit of trouble getting used to "A Few Small Repairs" at first. But, it didn't take more than about a hour before I was enjoying it for the amazing piece of work that it is. I am a gigantic acoustical guitar fan. I loved the work John Leventhal did on "Steady On", and the moody, atmospherics Larry Klein did on "Fat City". But, it is Shawn's voice that brings any arrangement together. I would listen to her sing the alphabet while being accompanied by a gong, if that's what she decided to do next. And, I have to admit I can hardly wait to see what she is going to do next. Marsha from Chattanooga here. I had the privilege this past Saturday to see Shawn's concert in Knoxville, Tennessee and greet her again for photos and autographs. She did essentially the same show as George from Charlotte listed. We got a bit cheated for the encore, with only two numbers: "If I Were Brave", (I loved seeing/hearing her on keyboards; new for me), and "Diamond in the Rough". This was my third time to see her perform in these past 4 years, but my first to see her with such a talented band. I was thrilled to finally see bassist Larry Klein live, and I am a huge Joni Mitchell fan for over 23 years now. The other previous performances (Nashville and Chattanooga in earlier years) were so different. Shawn is a fine guitarist, but did not show a level of enthusiasm that we finally saw this past Saturday, as she had Larry and Stewart to play off of, joke with, and help give her the richness her beautiful voice and songs deserve. They enhanced the musical dynamics and rhythm punches that she hasn't delivered solo in my witnessed shows of hers. We also did not receive the cute electronic dictionary fun you guys in other performance venues got from the band, so I am a little jealous. (I've heard Larry Klein likes lots of gizmos, and this must be one of his new toys!). Shawn joked about moving her use of the harmonica to the end of future shows, since it removes her lipstick, and laughed about not using the all day brand of color to her lips any more, as it required "a brillo pad to remove that sh** from your lips". She also told of her adventures in sleep and dreamland, when she thought she came up with wonderful songs, only to forget them the next morning upon awakening. She decided to get a bedside tape recorder to capture the brilliance of her nocturnal creations. When she played back her efforts, all she got was a weak, raspy and unintelligible rendition of some Buddy Holly tune, and was so cute demonstrating this... My big thrill came as Shawn and Larry graciously posed for pictures with my husband and me, and signed autographs. I have quite a Shawn collection now, and will cherish the AFSR songbook she penned for me. And that Larry...oh, oh, Larry, you gem of a man! Thank you for being such a wonderful sport to sign, "Hi Marsha-- Larry Klein" on your portrait at the inside cover of your ex-wife's album and painted by her...none other than the incomparable Joni Mitchell's "Wild Things Run Fast", (where she and Larry are scrunched up, cheek to cheek, so obviously in love)... Well, things change, and now I ALSO have a portrait of Larry Klein and me (not quite so cheeky, but almost as cute!). I look forward to seeing Shawn and the band again, when I meet with a few of my Joni Mitchell Discussion List friends in August for the last Lilith Fair event in Vancouver, BC. If only Joni would surprise us with an appearance... my life would be complete.
