I used to always skip this song when it began to play! The lyrics were such a far cry from, say, Kill the Messenger, which has lines like, "sometimes the beauty of life hits like lightning washing everything clear..." or Polaroids: "but he just took polaroids of her smile in the light of the dawn of the menacing sky..." to lines like, "I was on drugs/ i took a nap/ i didn't mean it/ i want it back.." yikes. BUT! Seeing shawn jam on the electric guitar on this song has changed it completely for me. Now when i hear it, i turn it up reeeeaaalllyy loud. Correct me if i am wrong, but i think this is the only song i have ever seen her play an electric guitar on in a live performance. (I know she does electric guitar on 'Monopoly') Makes me wonder even more what hard rock songs she did in the early days... perhaps some ac/dc covers? I can hear&see it now-- shawn singing: "And YOU, shook me ALL NIGHT LONG!" ~jean - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. I caught a radio interview with shawn on our local station which airs the Bob & Sheri Show each morning... I am only spewing what i remember off the top of my head cuz i was at work and missed bits and pieces... (Confession: I took the phone off the hook to hear most of it... shhhhh! don't tell!) They asked Shawn how she has a social life being on tour so much... she said that the touring is her social life, and that she has been out there on the road pretty much non-stop for 7 years. Her life is her relationships with the band and crew...traveling, watching movies after the shows, inside jokes; all of that was what she loved. Shawn talked about writing music... she prefers to write on the guitar as opposed to piano; She also prefers writing sort of separately as opposed to a group effort. She emphasized the awesome partnership her and john leventhal share when writing...but that they still kind of do their individual thing initially and THEN put it together. They asked shawn about her collaborations with other singers, mentioning lyle lovett ( i thought for sure she would mention Chapin here, but didn't.) When asked who she would MOST like to do a duet/collaboration with, she emphatically replied, "Neil Finn, Neil Finn, Neil Finn!" Me thinks she admires Neil Finn... :) (Incidentally, I recently picked up the latest Finn Brothers CD, and it is really good...) The announcers asked shawn how she felt about being everywhere now, on the radio, on VH1, in the news... she said that actually, not much has changed for her because she is still doing mostly the same thing: touring. She stated that she is a tad busier these days, but doesn't really get the chance to hear the radio, or watch tv, or read the magazines, so it is pretty much business as usual. Hmmm...i should've taken notes while listening, bcz i am sure there is more, but it escapes me right now. All in all, a pretty good interview, recognizing shawn's newly found recognition... to that i say, "It's about time!" :) ~jean - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. Never saw her do any real hard rock. But she did cover these songs in the real early years (1979-1980) - Kathy's Son, Up On the Roof, Satin Sheets, Racin' in the Streets, Sweet Baby James, You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go, Acadian Driftwood and It's Over. As you know, she still does some of these songs and has recorded a couple. susan (still bummed about missing Shawn @ the Greek in Berkeley cause I'll be in New Jersey) Susan Krauss Krauss Research skrauss@hooked.net http://www.wenet.net/~skrauss - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. Mary Lou and Shawn are good friends, Mary Lou seems to mention Shawn a lot, and Shawn guests on Mary Lou's forthcoming album, just to let ya know. - -- rachel rkb200@is5.nyu.edu my Mary Lou Lord page is at http://pages.nyu.edu/~rkb200/ - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. Just one more adventure on my "summer list of things to do"... I will be venturing up to Scranton for Lilith Fair! It should be pretty awesome, since the Shawn-Meister will be present.... I am also looking forward to seeing Patty Griffin and Lisa Loeb. Needless to say, i'm slightly excited...(but you knew that already...) I saw a lilith in charlotte, nc, a coupla weeks ago and am a tad worried about shawn going on so early on the mainstage... i hope the crowd will be less distracted than they were for emmylou harris in the same time slot in charlotte. It was dinner time, people venturing from the b-stage, and just not paying much attention. Of course, Shawn's following up north is a little more respectful than down here... (The winston-salem Ziggy's crowd was a tad rude at last tuesday's show...) I'd be interested to know if anyone knows of an artist named Yung Chin Lahmo who is scheduled to appear on the b-stage... never heard of her. Can anyone help? ~jean :) now playing: duncan shiek-self titled patty griffin-living with ghosts ani difranco-out of range (<--- thanks for recommending this J!) susanna hoffs-self titled sarah mclachlan-surfacing - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body.
