Double damn!! I had really wanted to hear her without Sarah and from what I've read I missed a good show. Any way, I got there just as Alana Mills was one her second or third song, so after surveying the village area for a while, I spotted the Nettwerk tent and headed that way, thinking I might spot a couple of Fumblers. And low and below, there was a whole little group of them. I saw Jennifer HD first, and recognized her from the web page. So I made my way over and said "hi". We talked for a while and it was nice to meet all these wonderful people who up until now had only been letters on a computer screen. I know Chris was there, and his sister, and a couple others ... but I can't remember all their names ... I'm sorry. But trust me, it was great to meet all of you. So, by this time the group of non-Fumbler friends I'd come with had left me to go shopping and then head for our seats. But I headed over to the second stage, hoping to see either Lois or Cathy B. And luck of luck, I saw them both sitting right in the front row. So, I sat down by them and introduced myself. After a little intro chit-chat with Cathy I remembered that I had brought a present for her. So, I gave it to her. It was a little silver picture album. On the front it was engraved. At the top it said like "Lilith Fair 1997" and at the bottom something like "Thanks for being such a great person". I told her it was for her to put all her pictures in she'd collected over the tour. She seems really, truthfully touched and was very gracious. It was great to find Cathy just as wonderful in person as she is over e-mail. I also gave her this cool silver and black onyx necklace I'd gotten for Sarah and ask her to pass it on for me. Today she mailed me saying thanks for her gift and to tell me that Sarah and Ash both really liked the necklace. Talk about putting a big, stupid grin on my face ... jeez!! Oh, yeah!! And Cathy took a picture of me. Eventually there will be a link to it in her diary part of the web page . I thought that was too cool!! And I agree with Jennifer HD -- we should start a Cathy mailing list ;) Now to the performers: Katell Keinig: she was on the second stage and I was really impressed. She has a *huge* voice and I really enjoyed the mini-show. I think I'm gonna get her album ASAP. Her song "One Hell Of A Life" was really cool!! Lisa Loeb: cool lime green pants, woo-hoo!! I thought she was "ok" before, but now I really like her. She did a great job with the a-girl-and-her-guitar routine and was super cute. I think her vocal talent has really widened since the CD was recorded and I'm looking forward to the new one. Emmylou Harris: wow!! I gotta say I just have so much respect for the woman. As someone else mentioned, just the epitome of class and SO MUCH TALENTED. I'm not fond of country music but she's just great. Her band kicks ass too (in particular the drummer). Oh, yeah ... and the version of "Deeper Well" she did just rocked!! Joan Osborne: this was something I was really looking forward to. Joan is one of my all time favorites and never having seen her live before, I was really psyched ... and I was not disappointed. She was just amazing and sexy and cool and loud and liberal and I'm just in love ;) I loved the new stuff, too -- and am really upset she has no idea when a new CD will be out. I want a new CD ... NOW!! Jewel: uhhmmm, I have to admit this was kinda the low point of the evening for me. I mean, don't get me wrong, I like Jewel and still listen to her CD occaisionally. But I don't know, I just don't connect with her music that strongly. She's still just ok to me. But, to give credit where credit is due her performances of "Foolish Games" and "Who Will Save Your Soul" were excellent. I also thought the "Catch A Cold With Me" song was too cute. But all in all I wish Jewel and Joan had been switched. Sarah: what can I say but ... YEA!!!!!!!!!!!! She was just amazing. Her voice is stronger than ever and she was terrific. Somewhere between the Fumbling tour and now she's just unleased this energy on stage that wasn't there before. I mean, yeah her voice and "cuteness" have always been there but this charisma that she has now -- wow. I mean, even the crowd who had never heard anything except "Possession" and "BaM" were just jiving. She was *so* entertaining. I also think the "new Luke" was fantastic. It's still seem weird though seeing Sarah jumping around on stage with him ... but I like it, I *really* like it. All in all, I just can't find anything wrong with her set (except it was too short). I think Sarah has really come into her own while on stage. I think the days of the little singing waif on the carpet are gone -- and I for one like the "new" Sarah just fine!! So there you have it. I had a wonderful time and was so fortunate to get to meet so many wonderful Fumblers and the ever awesome Cathy B. All in all, an unforgettable day. - -Casey =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= / "If I shed a tear, I won't cage it ... if I feel a rage I won't / \ deny it ... Hello all! Jean here-- this is a little late, but it would seem that i'm getting too old for these adventures, and am STILL trying to catch up on my sleep! whew! So lemme tell you about the show... Definitely one of Shawn's best performances in my book (Hey Gerry--The Show at Toad's, however, is still *THE* best!) ...and i'm not even speaking from the Shawn Hero Worship Mode... the Trio played off each other so naturally... omigosh. Now, being Height Deficient and all, i can't believe i went to the front to stand. Never done that before... But Rox had scouted front & center spots... How could i possibly resist? (Thanx Rox!) But being at the very front eliminated the problem of being at armpit level with the people standing around me, so it was all good. Opening Act: Duncan Shiek... He was surprisingly good. And cute! I have his CD, but had not listened to it enuff to be able to actually distinguish the songs from one another, other than the radio singles. But despite his obvious shyness, he put on a great performance even though his eyes were closed almost the entire time. He will be around for awhile, me thinks... Now for the Shawn-Meister: i will follow the same format that DC did... Shawn. *Hair: reddish, short... very chic. *Outfit: hmmm... a flowery ensemble; baby doll tee with a "sort-of matching" mini-skirt like thing... it looked great on her; and definitely showed off her runner's legs, but i'm still wondering about the color coordination... :) *Mood: Very high energy. Larry and shawn goofed off the entire show... stealing glances, butting heads, chatting and exchanging grins... there must have been a gazillion inside jokes with each song that we, of course, were clueless about. But seeing them have such a great time, made it that much more fun. The Trio. This is the second time i have seen these 3 perform together live... but the 1st time that i have been 5 feet away from them while they were perfoming...whee! I agree with DC... they ROCKED the house! They opened with my favorite song, Kill the Messenger. Larry Klein was gettin' down, Brother Man! Before the show, a guy standing next to me asked me if they would have any percussion... i assured him that with Larry Klein on bass, they would not need it. He didn't believe me at first... but now he is definitely a believer! :) Here is the setlist: - -Kill the Messenger - -Another Long One - -Get Out Of This House (no offense to shawn, but i have an intense aversion towards the harmonica) - -The Facts About Jimmy - -You and the Mona Lisa - -Window To the World - -Viva Las Vegas (complete with dance, and cat mewing) - -Wichita Skyline (She STILL hasn't been to wichita -- love the part where she sings a line from Wichita Lineman!) - -Trouble (Shawn asked if we knew the inspriation for this song, and i yell out "Private Universe!" Yay! She heard me and remembered that later that evening.) - -Polaroids (no medly at the end...boo hoo.) - -Steady On (She played the early arrangement, before it was altered for the Steady On CD; it was jammin!) - -I Want it Back (shawn on electric guitar) - -Sunny Came Home (The crowd realllyy got into this one!) - -Round of Blues ==========encore - -This Is Your New Thing Now - -Diamond in the Rough (this ROCKED baby; felt like shakin my booty!) **oh wait, Killing The Blues was in there somewhere.... it was pretty awesome. Being up front, we saw the songs that they had skipped since the setlist was taped to one of the monitors. They skipped 3 songs: Stranded, What i Get Paid For, and If I were Brave (drat.) I guess they had kinda' run out of time with the in-between song banter. But that's okay, because that is one of my favorite parts of the show anyway! At one point in the show, Larry pulled out a nifty little electronic device; it was a talking machine that gives them the "Word of the Day." So Larry tinkers with it a bit; they joke about the obscene words being programmed out of the machine...then he puts it up to the microphone and a little robotic voice says a word, sort of mumbled, which sounded at first like the word "Nucleus." He repeated it a couple of times... it still sounded like "nucleus". Shawn goes over to Larry, and snags the machine, and takes a look at what the machine said... the word was actually: "UTERUS"... What a hoot! Then Shawn programs the machine to say "BEER" at the request of one of the audience members. hehhehh. that was good. *MY ONLY COMPLAINT* is the affliction that seeing the show and meeting shawn has left for me to face on my own... it seems that now every time i hear Sunny Came Home, i get this goofy grin on my face! It's just like a Pavlov response... you know, when the dog hears the bell it salivates? Hear the Bell...dog salivates. This is what happens to Jean, only it's: hear the song...grin like a maniac. hear the song...grin like a maniac. you know... like an ax murderer? oh man. My customers keep asking me what the heck i am so happy about! That just makes me grin even more and say, "Oh, nothing!" It was a great time...and a great show. For those of you who have not had a chance to see her live... you have GOT to go!!! Meanwhile, i STILL have this goofy grin on my face... ~jean :) PS: (Pleasure meeting ya, Rox! I'll have those pics developed soon!) - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body.
