I saw her perform it at Villa Montalvo (great venue) as part of her encore. The song is perfect for Shawn (lots of minor chords) and being a Beatles fan made it more special. She played it with a slow, deliberate pace which was mesmerizing, she really made it her own, as with her best covers like "Don't you think I feel it too". >PLUS: Has anyone ordered the sheet music books from Cherry Lane Music? (I'm >an old trumpet player turned rock star-poser.) Do you have any of her sheet music? I have Fat City and Cover Girl, which are pretty good. They give all of the tunings, capo placements and chord fingerings which make it easier for those of us who struggle a bit reading tablature. They don't get you to the point of being able to sound like she does on something like "Satin Sheets", she is an excellent guitarist. Okay, Jean (aka BigHair...although due to a recent 'hair reduction' it's not as big as normal ;-) and I went to see Shawn last night at Ziggy's in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Major good stuff forthcoming... Jean and I had agreed to meet around 7pm. Due to my problems with directions (my fault not Jean's), I got there about 20 minutes late. I go up the walk and try to go in. Um, miss? We don't open until 8pm. Huh. I was supposed to meet people here at 7pm. Well, if anybody comes looking for you we'll let them know you came by. I turn around to wait in my car and figure I'll listen to some Shawn CDs in the meantime. Then I see this tiny thing walking across the street waving a baseball cap (our clue as to who Jean was). Introductions were had. Jean then tells me, "You're not going to believe this. Look." She hands me this piece of paper that's an email printout from Shawn's manager telling Jean to find Scott so&so (we kept butchering his last name ;-) and he would get her backstage. I completely freak out. I told Jean I thought about bringing my camera but figured they wouldn't let me take it in so I didn't bother. I convince Jean we need to purchase a disposable one. So Jean and I leave her sister and her friend Sue and head for the local drug store. We discuss our disposable camera options and decide to go with the medium price one with the coupon. We split the cost and head out the store. I tell Jean to look at the dust on that thing. Jean laughs and says she hopes it hasn't expired. Then we give each other the look. You know the one. Uh oh, we might be in trouble. We take a look at the expiration date and it was sometime in 1996. The month had rubbed off if that tells you anything ;-). We head back in the store to buy another camera and return that one. Of course the manager can't figure out how to do a return with a coupon. Sigh. I politely look at her and say, "Excuse me we're in a bit of a hurry." She *finally* gets the exchange done and Jean and I are on our way! The line has started forming by time we get back. I had my ticket already but Jean, Sue and Tina were on a list since they had paid for their tickets over the phone. Of course, the 'call back' guy had started at the back of the line so those three have to go to him. I go on in and hold a place for us right up front. Sue and Tina decided they'd rather sit, so they sit while Jean and I stand guard over our front row, dead center seats! Duncan Sheik came on first. This was the fifth time I've seen him in concert. I must say this by and far his best performance. He was even more talkative than normal. He's extremely shy and pretty much would rather not perform at all. He kept his eyes closed during every song. Jean said she thought Duncan looked at me like he might remember me, but who knows (I've met him twice so far.) There was this little 11 year old girl to Jean's left. Huge Duncan Sheik fan. She all but swooned when he took the stage. After his set I got one of the roadies to give her Duncan's setlist (the one he had used). I told her I had taken some pictures of him at a small acoustic set he had done and would mail them to her. She was overjoyed. It was so cute to watch. Jean and I remindisced about our first concerts. Then we felt old ;-). Then came SHAWN!!! I'm going to let Jean handle the setlist and all the other stuff. Jean got Shawn's attention by correctly answering the trivia question! This is the second time I've seen Shawn. The first time really doesn't count because I saw her at the beginning of a 13 band lineup and she was only on for like 30 minutes. Not nearly enough time! But she ROCKED! I was so blow away. If you get the chance...go see her!!! You won't regret it. She had such an incredible rapport with the audience. Her and Larry Klein looked like they were having the time of their lives! The show was over and we were wondering where we could find Scott, the tour manager. This guy walked past us and Jean said she thought it was him. So me and my big mouth yelled out his name. Sure enough he turned around, walked over and it was him! He gave us these cool passes and told us to hang out. We did as we were told! :) Jean and I walked up and looked at the t-shirts in the mean time. I bought a shirt and since they were having a deal selling the Live '88 cassette for three bucks with the t-shirt, I got one of those too! (Of course I had to bum a dollar off Jean...) Scott came up and told us that there were some other people there to meet Shawn, but to come hang out by the bus and he would take us in last so we could 'hang out'. Apparently some people had won a radio contest and were getting to meet Shawn. Shawn got out of the bus and talked with them for a few minutes and signed some autographs and got back on the bus. Then Scott called us over and told us to come on in! Yes we got to go *inside* the bus!!! Jean told Shawn that we knew they were tired so we wouldn't stay long. Jean also told her that she was the crazy one that had flown to Austin to see her. I told her I had worn my hair in pigtails so she would notice me. She said, "How could I not miss you two, you were *right there*!" I don't know about Jean but I was squealing on the inside!!! She posed for some pictures with us (coming to a web page near you soon!) and we talked to her about the listserv. We told her that we had a 150 people on the list and everyone was really excited about it. (Okay controversial topic coming up...sorry.) We asked her if she remembered some guy giving her paintings at shows. She said it sounded vaguely familiar. Jean filled in her on the controversy on the list about it all. Then Jean handed her Neil's song! Sorry Neil but I talked Jean into it before we got on the bus. My convincing remark was, "C'mon he put it on the *internet* he has to know it will get around. Plus, she'll probably get a kick out of it." Well Jean gave her the lyrics and she put them on the table and said she'd read them later. She wrote a little note to the list. All it said was 'Thanks all for listening' or something like that. If I get a chance I'm going to scan it before I leave work so you all can see it. I'm also going to scan the backstage pass that she and Larry Klein signed. We got ready to leave and I had my t-shirt wrapped in a little ball. She wanted to know what it was. I told her it was a t-shirt I had bought. She asked the others if they had gotten t-shirts. They said they already had some. It just occurred to me, maybe they should have said no, they didn't have any money on them and maybe she would have given them shirts! We said our goodbyes and our thank yous for seeing us. She put her arm around Jean and told us good night. Me being the big dork grabbed her and hugged her. And fortunately she hugged me back rather than calling security! All in all, it was an unforgettable night. One of the best concerts I've seen. Especially due to the venue. Can someone please clarify this for me - I happened to catch the end of Sunny on the radio as I got into the car the other night, and turned out it was only cos' they were playing American Top 40. Anyway, after the song finished, whatsisname the AT40 host said something like "there's Shawn Colvin, the bride to be; she's already been down that road once before and it didn't work out... marriage's not an easy thing..etc etc" and then they just kind of moved on to the next song without really clearing it up. Is Shawn getting married again?! Or is this just a vicious rumour, or did I just fall for some stupid joke from whatsisname. Or did I in fact dream the whole thing? (somebody help me!) Don't get me wrong, it's not like I think that Shawn's personal life is any of my business, and I don't want to intrude, but I just thought it would be nice for her if she'd found someone to grow happily old with, that's all. If she's happy, I'd like to be happy for her too... (ok, this is where you all go: "oohhh, how sweet...") Yeah! Shawn is engaged (saw the rock at last night's show)... this is public knowledge because she mentioned it in the recent article in People Magazine... here's the article.... 6/7/97 Steven Lang Michael Haederle (In Austin) Fine Tuning [With an upcoming wedding and a hit CD, singer Shawn Colvin is finally hitting all the right notes] As she retreated to her oak-shaded, Austin, Texas, home in 1995 to begin work on her album A Few Small Repairs, singer-songwriter Shawn Colvin was stewing over her pending divorce. And so, as she stared out her music-room windows toward Lake Austin, it was no surprise when the lurics to the song she would later title "Get Out Of This House" began to pop into her mind. "I thought of the line, 'Go jump in the lake/Go ride up the hill,'" she says of her Grammy-nominated vocal performance about telling off an ex. "It became a fairly comical tirade about my marriage, but way over the top." Although Colvin's talent for making music from misery has served her well over 24 years of performing, upcoming events might change that tune. This summer she will tour with the Lilith Fair, an all-women revue, once again singing songs from the 1996 CD, her first gold record. "It's the most deeply affecting collection of songs of hers i'd ever heard," says her friend, singer Mary Chapin Carpenter. "I love the lyrics [and] that voice -- I'm transported." Colvin, too, has been moved lately, and in ways that have nothing to do with her touring. In October she plans to marry Austin advertising protographer Mario Erwin. At 41, it seems, she is an altogether different woman from the struggling performer who in her 20s face down a five-year bout with depression and alcohoism. "She's as happy as a clam," says her father, Bob, 67, a psychologist. Relaxing in her antique-filled home decorated with surreal paintings by Austin artist Julie Speed, Colvin explains that a mutual friend intoduced her to Erwin last spring. "I thought, 'This guy's pretty cute. And he's available,'" she says with a smile. They clicked after their first date, water skiing on Lake Austin, and last October he got down on one knee to propose. Now they share her Austin home with her two cats and his golden retriever. "We seem to have this thing going on that no one else understands," says Erwin, 41. Colvin's enduring love for music is sell mysterious. It began when her fater, an amateur folk guitarist, introduced her to the guitar when she was 10. "She has never wanted to do anything else, ever," says her mother, Barbara, 66, a retired lawyer. Colvin and her two brothers and sister "sang on car trips," Colvin says, a pastime that came in handy as the family moved from Vermillion, S.Dak. (where Colvin was born), to Ontario and then to Carbondale, Ill., where she went to high school while her folks earned graduate degrees. "All the ingredients were there for me to want to be involved in music or art," she says of her adolescent years. "I felt kind of lonely and misunderstood." After graduating in 1973, Colvin entolled in Souther Illinois University but dropped out after one year because, she says, "I started getting work singing [at Carbondale bars], and it was just too alluring." In 1975 she moved to Austin to sing for the Dixie Diesels, a country rock band. But years of hord rock had strained her silvery voice and Colvin quit in 1978 to let her throat heal, which threw he into an emotional tailspin. "i clearly had a monkey on my back," she says of the drinkin and depression that plaued her until she sought the help of a therapist in New York City in 1983, where she had moved three years before. "I had the wherewithal to realize I was probably going to die, and that scared me. I was able to get past blatant self-destruction." But Colvin continued struggling with her career--waitressing and word-processing by day, then playing music by night--until 1988, when a new manager, seeing the success of other folk-rock performers, persuaded Columbia Records to sign her. Colvin's 1989 debut, Steady On, was produced by her writing partner and then-boyfriend John Leventhal and won a Grammy for best contemporary folk recoding. In 1991 she toured the US with British guitarist-songwriter Richard Thompson and fell in love with Thompson's soundman and tour manager Simon Tassano. They married two years later, after her second album, Fat City, was released. After a third CD, she and Tassano packed off to Austin. The move, however, didn't help a marriage that had started to fade, and soon, says Colvin, "it was clear things weren't going well with us." In December 1995 they divorced, and the following spring Erwin arrived for a waterskiing daate. Now, instead of crafting lyrics aboutromantic regrets and revenge, Colvin has been talking about starting a family. She also fantasizes about taking a break after years of touring. "I'd like to get off the road long enought to miss it." she says. But as she considers her younger days as a fan who took comfort fromo the songs of others, she softens. "A lot of people thank me. The music has been a companion to them through a rough time," she says. "That's one of those really gratifying things that makes you think you've come full circle." Dear SLSA: Shawn is getting married again in the Fall; September I think. She is marrying a photographer from Austin. There was a write up about her in People a few months ago. Mandy pointed the article out to me. Mandy of Mandy's Shawn page. Mike - ---------- From: SLSA To: Small Repairs Subject: [s-r] Shawn the bride to be??!! Date: August 7, 1997 10:17 AM Hey all, I was going to post this the other day, but I've only just remembered that I heard it.. (ok, this is where you all go: "oohhh, how sweet...") BTW, if it's not true, please don't start rumours and blame me! ~ Kat ~ - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. Hey all again, Thanks for clearing the engagement thing up for me, people - what would I do without all you guys? I'd have to just crawl back under my rock, where it's nice and quiet and dark... Anyway, now that I know about it, isn't that lovely for her? Maybe there'll be a whole new generation of little Colvins running round singing and playing guitar for us someday. I'll be looking for my wedding invitation in the mail....(you never know!) ;) ~ Kat ~ - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body.
