I've seen him in concert four times since December and this Tuesday will be the fifth time (with none other than our lovely Jean). I saw him on Jay Leno (I think it was JL) and I think he sounded pretty bad. He's much better in person! One of the shows I saw was entirely acoustic and it was incredible! Unfortunately he *hates* touring, due to incredible shyness, but luckily that hasn't kept him off the circuit. The first show I saw (the acoustic one) he signed my CD, took a picture with me and talked for a bit. When I later saw him at the second show, he not only remembered me, but remembered what I had been wearing during the first show (!!!) and what we talked about. He's an incredibly sweet guy and well worth giving a listen. You know, I think this post is a bit scattered. Sorry. I'm working under a major deadline at work and my brain is mush! I have tickets to the 8/31 show at the Greek Theater @ UC Berkeley w/ Duncan Sheik. The Greek is a great venue, BTW. This will be my fifth Shawn concert, the second with a band. Does anyone have any info to share as to the makeup of the band and play list for this segment of the tour? I really hope she plays the Beatles' "I'll be Back", that one brought tears to my eyes when I saw her @ Villa Montalvo in June. I'm looking forward to seeing Duncan, as well, but I was disappointed by his album, due to it being so different from "Barely Breathing". Check out this 35minute concert Duncan has out on the web- http://www.audionet.com/concerts/chase/sheik/ I watched it yesterday and it has me turning around to his stuff. I think he's just terrific -- and I agree with the reply on another person who said they liked the other songs better than his hits. I read an interview where he had written all his songs and was getting ready to start recording. Then he got hooked up with Rupert Hines producing, who added all the strings to his songs. Duncan was so excited about this -- he felt that the strings really took his songs to a whole new level, where he really wanted them to be. And, as a string player, I feel the string arrangements are incredible on these songs. Subtle, tasteful, yet powerful at times -- really perfect arranging. Duncan Sheik is an excellent song writer, and a good singer as well, and when I heard he was touring with Shawn I thought it was a natural combination. He writes wistful relationship songs, often with an ironic and cynical sensibility. GET HIS CD TODAY!!!!! Although I'm new to the list, and I assume this has been discussed before, I'll give it a whirl.... I think that AFSR has the strongest lyric writing that Shawn has done, ever, by a pretty wide margin. Although I will be the first to agree that it sounds the least like Shawn, I chalk that up to production. I heard most of the songs off of AFSR live twice (solo acoustic) before the disc came out and my impression before hearing the studio versions was that this was straight-ahead Shawn with extremely strong material, although I found GOoTH a little sub par (minor point). The power of those words is consistently very high, evoking strong imagery of just what was going on at that time. I have seen her once since AFSR came out (also solo acoustic) and this reinforced my views of the songs. IMHO, the three best songs on the disc are, in order of appearance: The Facts About Jimmy Trouble New Thing Now Alright, Neil, I only signed up yesterday and here's some Shawn content... I just spent several days at Falcon Ridge Folk Festival with members of the Dar Williams list (proudly wearing our list t-shirts). I doubt that would have happened if we only used her list to discuss her albums. (not that we wouldn't still have a lot to say :) I hope people keep saying a bit about their lives past Shawn content. That's what will make the list more meaningfull than a fanzine to me. I would have loved to stop in Hartford Sunday night, but after four days at FRFF it was time to get home. Did anyone see the Hartford CT Shawn/Duncan Shiek show? How was it? See, I just don't understand people's complaints about this. How can your mailboxes *possibly* be full from Small Repairs. On an EXTREMELY busy day (and I mean really fucking busy) this list *might* see 15-20 posts. That is not enough to fill up one's mailbox in a long shot. But, if you do think that is too many messages, you are the people that the NSC tag was created for, so you don't have to waste time reading what you don't want to. With your mail filters properly configured, you don't ever even have to see those messages if you so choose. I don't know if this sounds snippy or not, but if it does -- my apologies in advance. It's been a long day. - -Casey =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= / "If I shed a tear, I won't cage it ... if I feel a rage I won't / \ deny it ...
