She played at a small venue where she had to be done playing by about 10:45 so she said at the beginning she would not do a lot of talking in order to get more songs in. She played a good variety of music from her new stuff, Fat City, Steady On and a couple of cover tunes, Viva Las Vegas by Elvis Presley was great! I'm not sure how I felt about her playing with Larry Klein and Stuart Smith. They were fantastic, don't get me wrong they along with Shawn played a lot of guitar solos in between songs but I guess I'm just used to just Shawn and her guitar. She seemed to have a lot of fun with them, laughing and joking throughout the show. She messed up a couple of times, grabbing and playing the wrong guitar, feedback with the mics but she just laughed it off and made everyone else laugh. She said at the end and I quote, "You guys were the funnest audience so far on this whole fucking tour!" She is so great! Oh the craziness of this whole show was that she was playing right down the street from me but I am on vacation 3 hours away so I drove back the 3 hours and am now heading back again. Believe me, she was worth it! Since all seems to have gone fairly quiet on the Repairs front, I thought I'd throw this in. For those of you who like Sarah McLachlan & Tori Amos (like, say, oh I don't know... Casey, and I'm sure there's plenty more of you out there), here's someone else you'll probably like - - her name's Robyne Dunn, she's an Australian piano-playing singer/songwriter, and she's really very good, although not too well known, even here (but we all know that says *nothing* about talent...). Her Stowaway album from 1994 is still one of my favourite albums ever, and she's just released a follow up, called Spindrift. The album was launched this week at The Basement in Sydney, (a highly respectable jazz club) and just to prove how good she is, here's what they have to say about her (taken from their web site): "A reflective and emotionally intuitive gem, singer/songwriter Robyne Dunn's new album Spindrift is a work of sheer beauty. We can't praise too highly Robyne's talents! As all afficianados of lyrical and musical talent already know, Robyne has long been a name to watch. She's finally delivered a follow-up to Stowaway, her acclaimed 1994 album that garnered immense critical praise here and abroad. The wait has been well worth it. Entirely her own creation, Robyne wrote, produced and recorded Spindrift at home, proving that big bucks and expense accounts mean nothing when it comes to art. Happier playing with high calibre jazz musicians while declaring herself neither a jazz singer or composer, Robyne can strike that beautiful balance between freedom and control again and again... We've said it before and we still stand by it. Robyne Dunne is the richness of the Australian music scene personified." So there you go - that pretty much says it all. I could rave more about her, but if you're interested, check out Robyne's web site at http://www.robynedunn.com.au, where you can find out all about her and her music, and listen to a couple of samples from each of her albums. You can also order CDs from the site, and I'd definitely recommend Stowaway (although I apologise on behalf of the Aust government for the ridiculously high price of CDs down here). I only just got Spindrift and haven't had much of a chance to really listen to it, but it's sounding pretty good so far. If you want to know anything else about Robyne, or tell me to get nicked for sending such a long post not about Shawn, email me privately and I'll be happy to chat with you! Now I can feel good about having done my part for the Australian music scene, as well as introducing all you guys to another great talent! Kat..... :) - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. The two songs I've heard by him I really like, and I'm considering getting his CD, but would like some more input first. The two songs I've heard by him I really >like, and I'm considering getting his CD, but would like some more input >first. This is my first post so be nice :). I love Shawn I must say. I started with AFSM but very soon got Live '88. I'm going to buy the rest of her albums as soon as I can afford to do it. Now on to Duncan. To me radio usually doesn't portray an artist as they truly are. I find this in the case of Jewel and Duncan Shiek. His songs that have been released so far (Barely Breathing - which is I think the worst song on the album, and She Runs Away - I like much better and even fits in nicely to popular radio airplay today) are his only really radio friendly songs on the album. The rest of the album is filled with songs of a much slower tempoed variety featuring mostly voice, his acoustic guitar, some piano, and stringed instruments (I love strings in general). I think he's a wonderful lyricist. Most of my favorite artists have this quality also, such as Tori, Sarah, Shawn, Lori Carson, Jewel (on her non radio songs and unreleased stuff), Holly Palmer, Barbara Kessler, Joy Askew. For the other Duncan fans I'd just like to say my favorite tracks are Reasons for Living, The End of Outside, and Little Hands, and Days go by (which is filled with the aforementioned string arrangements :) I've been lucky to find promo copies of his cd when I lived in Gainesville. I currently possess a pre-release copy of his cd which I treasure because I only got it for 2 bucks in the bargain bin, perfect condition too! I don't play it though and instead play a regular promo of the album. I used to have another promo but sold it to a dear friend of mine for the cost of purchase. If you'd like any more info, just ask.
