Hi Shawn fans, Don't get a chance to post much but I'm de-lurking to enter this discussion briefly. I first heard Shawn on WXPN radio in Philly. Her first album received a lot of play prior to the Philly Folk fest. I think that may have been 1987, but it could have been a year either way. By the time I saw her live at the fest, I was already a fan. She was great then, and she just keeps growing lyrically and musically. It was '92. Fat City was fresh from the presses. I'm in the car with my friend Jacque, just coming back from the CD store with discs in hand. She say's "ya gotta listen to this" yeah yeah yeah. whatever. It's a race to unwrap the CD's but I'm ahead 'cause she has that pesky little Sony reflective tape holding hers closed - Sony should market that stuff to NASA to hold the shuttle together on take-offs and landings. Anyhow.... "HA, triumph" I think to myself but alas, her car, her CD player. 30 seconds into "Polaroids" I'm whining. "Ok, that's enough, why can't we put my CD in now?" Jacque makes a face, rolls her eyes and complies. Two days later I can't get enough, I bought my own copy and to this day I don't remember what the hell was so important that I had to listen to it. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. Being a total science geek, i'm sure i have no idea what literary work > (if it is literary) this comes from... Waiting for Godot is a classic Sam Beckett play, which revolutionized modern theatre. Many consider him to be the founder of absurdist theatre. It is a simple 2 character play where both men discuss the nature of Godot (an allegory got God) and if he will come. He never does. Since Shawn is a great fan of classic theatre and the Actor's Studio (Joni Mitchell often refers to Tennessee Williams' characters) I'm sure it is one of her favorites, too. Being a total science geek, i'm sure i have no idea what literary work (if it is literary) this comes from... ~jean >> OOooooohhh goodie... I feel a new thread coming on. I know we have a linguist out there, how about some lit critics?? In my meager understanding... "Waiting for Godot" is a play (1952) by Samuel Beckett, a post-modern french playwright. (Actually, he was Irish, but he lived in Fr---) ANYWAY.... The play is about two guys (Estragon and Vladimir) who are hanging out on a country road, waiting. It is sort of a metaphor for passing time in a meaningless existence, all the while waiting for some grand event that never comes. Waiting for Godot has been compared by some philosophers to "waiting for death." Considering that the play is basically about a couple of directionless guys, and it takes place entirely on "the road" in the middle of nowhere, I thought Shawn's allusion to that was perfect in the context of the song. Overall, she's talking about life on the road as a performer, and more specifically, right after the "waiting for Godot" line, she says "and then you pick your sorry ass up off the street, and go..." Smart girl, our Shawn... I love it. I'd love to hear other people's take on this!! ~~~Janel~~~ - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body.
