First of all, I find this discussion fascinating, and perfectly appropriate. If you don't like it, skip all the ones that mention Painter in the subject. Better yet, if you're totally set on just reading about Shawn, skip all the ones that have NSC on it. I had actually planned on saying something before I was beaten to the punch (sorry if this imagery offends anyone). This guy was pretty much asking for trouble, and I was ready to spend some time writing a parody of his posts. I had imagined someone who's a sculptor throwing heavy bronze statues at singers and waiting to see the response on their faces. Personally, I was getting freaked out by this guy as well. It wasn't really the mere act of painting or his giving these paintings to the singers that bugged me... it was a combination of a whole bunch of factors which I will attempt to name below. 1) This guy was obviously obsessed. Obsession is fine. I'm obsessive about Shawn and about Paul Simon. This is okay as long as you know where the limits are. 2) Something about the way that he kept at it, painting not one nice painting, but 3, 4, or more paintings so that he could place one nicely, then throw another one in case the first one didn't elicit the right reaction, etc. was too weird. 3) This may be totally unrelated, but Paul Simon (my other obsession) had someone run up on stage and demand his attention right after John Lennon had been shot (and he was singing a song that deals with the death of celebrities, "Late, Great Johnny Ace"). This type of experience can really freak you out as a celebrity. Frankly, if I were a celebrity, especially a female one (funny how all of this guy's subjects were female...), I would be concerned about sending the right message to this guy. 4) All of his "subjects" were attractive females. 5) Some of these singers had obviously tried to send him the right signal. Edie Brickell's staffer might have been having a bit of fun at his expense, but there was a clear message there that he missed. "Edie's not interested. Please don't send this stuff," would be the way I'd paraphrase it. The way these singers tried to joke about it means that it was on their minds. You could kind of infer from his descriptions of their reactions that they thought one painting was nice, but that they were surprised at how obsessed this guy was. They weren't there to be objects that some freak was obsessed about, they wanted to share their music. If this guy's painting tosses make them uncomfortable, that's taking away from our experience. If I were a singer that got 4 or 5 of these paintings from the same guy, I would start to wonder about my safety at those shows. Anyhow, my view is, one painting for one singer, or maybe even a couple of paintings, might be okay. But multiple paintings of multiple singers sounds a bit excessive. And why the need to present them to the subjects? So if I read all the way through all of his posts and enjoyed his writing, what does that mean?!? I really resent the fact that I had to switch all the references to these women as "artists" to "singers" because I didn't want people to be confused. I know there are some folks out there who are interested in Lilith reports from around the country. I had to give up my ticket to the show here on Tuesday at the last minute.....but wasn't too heartbroken about it considering we had kind of a weak lineup here in Boston. My friends who went were drooling at the program guide that listed preformers like Shawn,Patty Griffin, Sheryl Crow, Indigo Girls, Chapin, etc. But Boston had Paula Cole, The Cardigans, Julianna Hatfield, Tracy Chapman, Fiona Apple.....and the only person I was making the trip for-Sarah McLachlan. Though I really like Tracy Chapman too. As it turns out the show got less than wonderful reviews in the newspaper. According to my friends....Tracy Chapman stole the show. Paula Cole was called "over-emoting".....and even my friends who DO like her said she was a bit over-dramatic. I never caught on to the Paula Cole wave......but it's true that I should give her new cd more of a chance. I must be missing something.....cuz she just hasn't "rawked my world" like she has so many other people who's musical opinions I respect. Must be me. Fickle, fickle, fickle. I kinda feel the same way about Jewel. Don't hate them or anything......they just don't wreck me like Shawn, Patty, and a few others do. SARAH McLACHLAN LYRICS: The Surfacing CD totally hypnotizes me. It's my favorite Sarah cd. If anyone wants me to send them the lyrics via email.....just let me know. **And I turn on CBS This Morning to see if maybe Shawn would be on today since she got bumped yesterday....only to be "Mmmbopped!" Give me a freaking break!!! GET OVER IT!!! how long can you guy's beat a dead horse?? I was mildly interested in this topic until after about the 20th posting, then it got old and the comments even more ridiculous. I can only imagine what pathos you would be swelling over if I had not expressed my stupid opinion (albeit taken the wrong way and taken WAY too far) about Greg, the painter. Okay, okay...I said it, i was repremanded, your points and opinions were heard and taken, I reconsidered and regretted my approach...ALMOST end of story.. BUT, every time i would sit down to write an apology, there was some jerk being just as much and even MORE of a jerk about/to ME...that has gotten to the point that I dont WANT to apologize. In essence, based on the attitudes of some very select individuals, I feel like its not worth my time to write an apologetic posting to everyone. If anything, I only want to apologize personally to Greg, one, for hurting his feelings by going about this the wrong way, and two, for not thinking before acting. And to that effect, the whole posting "scandal" seems to bother other people more than it EVER bothered him. And for this, I have developed a great deal of respect for Greg. Maybe based on how HE has handled all of this, I feel inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt. I also want to apologize for being the cause of a really stupid subject to those of you who are sick of hearing about it. But as for the rest of you who have stooped to my level and have taken this subject to the point of insanity... you can forget it. I suppose that none of you would be interested in knowing what SHAWN's opinion of Greg must be, but in all honesty, my opinion was based on sympathy to the performer's perspective. Obsessive fans, either innocent or harmful, is what ruins a star's approachability for the rest of us. It makes them have to get bodyguards and stop being open to meeting their fans. Shawn is one of the few who are remaining that haven't closed themselves off to the public. People like the Indigo Girls and Mary Chapin Carpenter have become unfortunate victims and are afraid of people to the point that being a star is no longer fun, but is nightmarish and isolating. Two other thoughts to keep in mind... I am a female singer and musician, I have been a victim of a violent crime... and as far as my opinion of the artwork I am a scholarshiped and award winning painter, and dont think that the paintings are "all that." (No intended offense to Greg on an artistic level-- I just want to keep this disproportional subject in perspective). Mooodeee PS: Neil, good writing style by the way! In spite of your topic. I had tickets and the people around me were very polite and said I could sit anywhere in the row, which didn't matter to me being that I was less than 50 feet center from one Shawn. The acoustics were fine from the 5th row but between songs you could hear the chatter in the back. I can only imagine how loud the chatter was from the back of the room. The only thing that really sucked was one "person" sitting next to me hooted and hollered during the guitar solos and in the middle of some of the songs (thank god "Window to the World wasn't one of them), which for me, spoil the performance. If you're gonna do it, wait until the end of the song please. But it's hard to convince someone to do that when they've had one too many drinks.Shawn seemed in a very good mood and was tanned and very well rested. I didn't get the impression she was annoyed about anything. When she's not in a good mood, I'd still go pay to see her, even to review new music, movies/TV shows with Chapin 4 times a year. A number of absolutely brilliant renditions of songs were ruined (and did not make the CD) because of a drunk yelling during the song. I'm glad I got to hear the songs but I wished that they had been able to use them on the CD - they were just great. I don't understand the yelling thing at all. I'll sometimes yell whoop during the applause, when emotion overtakes me, but never during song.
