Jean's idea of us coming up with an idea for the "Mona Lisa" video really caught my attention, because I'm a huge movie freak and am majoring in film. So, I've sat here and listened to "You And The Mona Lisa" with my eyes closed for quite a while and here's what I've come up with. Of course, depending on how much John Leventhal changes/restructures the song for radio, this may all fall apart. But, here's my "visual interpretation" of the song. First of all, I think the song in general has a happy feel, so I don't think it should be as "modern" and "dark" as the "Sunny Came Home" video. Actually, I think "Mona Lisa" is probably one of the happier feeling songs on 'AFSR'. Next, the song starts slow and quiet and builds. I think the video should fade up from black and start with a flying shot (helicopter) low over a bright green field that seems to stretch out. For enough away that we can't see everything quite clearly, in the middle of the field is a man standing in front of an easel (-->spelling??!!) painting. As the shot tracks in closer, flying over the green field that dances with the wind, we see more clearly the man who is painting. He is wearing faded blue jeans and a loose fitting white "painter's" shirt that rustles with the wind. We can not see what he is painting because the easal's back is to us. We are now about half-way to him. This is when Shawn starts singing the chorus "Oh, I love you the most..." we cut to a new scene. We're in a small valley with a waterfall in the background and a small stream that runs out of view to the right of the screen. The grass here is as vibrantly green as the grass in the field where the guy is painting. There is a rainbow of flowers growing in the meadow. In a light sprinkle, rose petals of all colors are falling ... like it's raining rose petals. See this valley as beautiful ... perhaps as one would imagine the garden of eden. Shawn is sitting on a large rock that's near the stream. She's dressed casually and is singing, with that wonderful expression on her face that she uses in concert. As she sings the chorus, the camera slowly tracks in on her while she sings until at the end we're in a semi-close up of Shawn's upper chest and face. We can see the falling rose petals landing in her hair and on her shoulders. She smiles as she sings, looking at the camera. As the chorus comes to an end and after Shawn sings "...nothing in between you and the Mona Lisa" we cut back to the previous flying shot over the field, picking up where we left off. As the song continues, we continue our low flight toward the painter. As we finally reach him, he switch from the helicopter shot to a crane mount with the camera set about a foot above his head level and looking down at him. The crane does a slow sweeping 360 around him and the easal, but we still can't quite make out the painting is. As the song starts back into the chorus, "We were walking up high..." we cut back to the beautiful meadow. While the rose petals are still lightly falling, we can see less of the valley this time. The focal point is the waterfall. That's where Shawn is, she's standing in the gently falling waterfall, wearing something like the white dress with spaghetti straps she's wearing on the inside cover of 'AFSR'. She is singing, but this time she does not look at the camera, as if she it completely alone in her beautiful meadow. We again track in on her, very slowly as she sings, looking to the left, right, and above the camera. This shot should be kinda like the waterfall shot in Sarah McLachlan's "Into the Fire", only brighter. Finally we are in an extreme close-up shot of her face, with the water rushing down beside and behind her. Finally, as she sings the line "...'till somebody called your name" she looks right into the camera ... and smiles. From that shot we fade into a wide angle of the meadow again, this time Shawn is back on the big rock, swaying gently to the music during the little guitar solo/interlude. She tilts her head way back, feeling the sun warm her face and the rose petals fall on her cheeks and lips as she sways and pats her foot. When the chorus ..."Oh I love you the most..." starts again we cut from this shot, to an above view of the valley, with the rose petals now falling around us and past us. Shawn and the paiter are holding hands, with their arms extended. They dance in a happy circle, smiling and throwing their heads back. They look up at us, but their eyes are closed. They continue to dance as the "...nothing in particular..." line is repeated, dancing like they are doing ring-around-the-posey. The rose petals are falling heavier now as the camera started to pull up, going higher and higher. This entire scene is done in moderate to slow motion. Finally, as the words of the song stop and just the music is left, we cut to the easal and the painting in the middle of the field. We approach it from a few feet away. This should be a POV shot, like we ourselves are walking toward it throught the grass. We end in a tight shot of the canvas. The painting is roughly done, with paint blotches here and there in the modern style, but it is clear what it is. It is a red heart dancing in a blue waterfall. As the last of the music fades, we fade to black. Ok ... so there it is. My visual impression of "Mona Lisa". I would *love* some feedback on this, so if any of you have opinions (good or bad) on my idea, please feel free to let me hear them. I just got through watching this movie 'Touch' starring Skeet Ulrich (from 'Scream'), Bridget Fonda, Tom Arnold, and Christoper Walken, and surprisingly it was really good. I just kinda rented the video on impulse because the story was written by the same guy who wrote 'Get Shorty'. The plot of 'Touch' was way too complex to explain here, but in a nutshell it was about this "simple/sweet" guy who could touch people, bleed with the stigmata, and then heal them. He worked at AA place, helping recovering alcoholics and really never cared to do much more. Than he was "discovered" and as you can guess, every tabloid and hustler from all over were after him. Along the way, he and Bridget Fonda fall in love. The movie was well acted in most all parts, had some really funny parts in it, and on the whole was a real spirit lifter. I suggest to anyone looking for an intelligent "happy-ending" movie. - -Casey =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= / "If I shed a tear, I won't cage it ... if I feel a rage I won't / \ deny it ...
