Admittedly I've only seen her about 3 times (once on the Rosie show) and afterwards my reaction is always the same *Oh*..... Now, I am as big of a fan as I can be - Jean can vouch for me - so it's not as though I don't think as highly of her talent as many of you but if I were hearing her for the first time on Letterman I don't think I'd rush out to buy her stuff. Maybe it's the acoustics - I don't know but it just does not do her justice. And I also think the backup's microphone was broken? I agree and recommend any and all of it. Although I think I would start with Plump Record's 'Live '88' there's nothin' like Shawn live (unless it's a crappy little talk show studio :). Well, if you 'all' will permit a small digression: I just got Nanci Griffith's 'Blue Roses from the Moons' - Shame on me for taking this long. It's very good for those who've been as remiss as me. Hi everybody... I managed somehow to stay up for Letterman last night to catch shawn... well, actually, i fell asleep during the first 30 minutes or so and managed to wake up in time by luck.... Shawn was right on last night! First of all, she looked really good. She's gone back to the same hair style that she had on the cover girl album and she was wearing a sleek black outfit. She looked really happy and recharged, with a huge smile on her face throughout the song. It was good to see. The performance was really on target, with John Leventhal jammin' off to the side. Once Blue's Rebecca Martin was on backup vocals. Doug Petty on keyboards and Shawn Pelton on drums. My reception was fuzzy so i couldn't tell who was playing bass. Now i REALLY can't wait to see her in concert! I was kind of surprised when Dave introduced shawn and said that "Sunny..." was the number one song on the radio. Woo Hoo! When did that happen? A great performance by shawn and the band last nite... this tour is gonna' kick some butt! ~jean ========================================================= This has been a post from Small Repairs. Now that we've all taken a few deep breaths (thanx Jean!) and recovered from the nastiness that was starting to go round, here's a thought for a shawn topic that doubles as a good laugh. With Casey adding all Shawn's lyrics to the web site, it got me thinking - you know when you happily sing along to a song, but don't really bother checking the lyrics to see if you really know the words or you just think you do, and when you do finally check, you discover you've been singing not only the wrong words, but things that sound totally ridiculous and that no talented songwriter (such as, say.. shawn) would have ever written...? Well, I did this the other day with a couple of shawn's songs, that I shamefully have to admit, I didn't really know all the words to. And here's a couple of things I discovered (feel free to laugh at me, as well as with me..): In 'Kill The Messenger' (sorry Jean, I believe it's your favourite song...), I always thought "Jane, there's an art to the game..." was "Jane, it's hard to regain..". Now you might be thinking that's kind of a reasonable alternative, but wait till you hear this one.... and again from the same song.. although I don't think I seriously thought this was the line, it's just what it sounded like... when shawn sings "As you're dragging your red rowing boat cross the forever fields" I'd happily sing along "As you're dragging your red ruined butt cross the floor...". See what I'm saying? It's pretty shameful really; believe me, I am a huge shawn fan.. really... Although I'm not sure what shawn would think about me totally decimating her incredible lyrics. Lesson in this for all of us: ALWAYS read the lyrics before you join in!!! Anybody else got any? Or are you going to leave me looking stupid all by myself (in which case I'll have to retreat in shame to lurk-dom..) kat....:) ========================================================= This has been a post from Small Repairs. I agree with everyone else. Shawn was completely off. She didn't seem to know where to look, the band didn't seem to know the song, and the backup singer's microphone must have really been messed up. On "Diamond in the Rough," I *unfailingly* sing "In my dreams I go down by the water, with a little stone [girl is the actual word there] in my arms..." even though I know that's not right...kind of like on The Nields' Gotta Get Over Greta, there's a line, "She was the vampire and I was her victim," I *always* sing "I was the vampire, and she was my victim"...hmmm...but, to paraphrase Old Moses, that's another post. I also had a lot of trouble with Polaroids...still do actually...okay, in the lyrics thingy, it says "blah blah [not verbatim], all in our uniforms, plaid and black" or "black and plaid" or something, yet every time I listen to the song I hear "all in our uniforms, black and black..."? I tossed it out on the stage when she played the Ventura Concert Theater (in '93 I think). She picked it up, looked at it and she looked pleased to me. She put the painting up where the audience could see it. One of the bouncers was impressed, handed me a flower, and said I could give it to her (you don't argue with guys like that). I managed to get her attention and she came over and got the flower. She squeezed my hand when she took the flower. I was QUITE distracted by this unexpected gesture, but I managed to get out "The painting was from me!". She gave me a beautiful smile and said "Thank you very much, it's beautiful.". I sent a photo of the painting to Nettwerk with a note requesting an autograph, a self addressed envelope and an international postal coupon. The picture came back autographed "Gregg - Peace! S McLachlan" and "Peace + Love = Happiness" in symbols. She also sent me a postcard with a picture of one of Sarah's paintings on it, a nude woman with blue wings and it was autographed "S McLachlan" and "Peace + Love = Happiness" in symbols. Until then, I didn't know Sarah was a painter. It is a little embarrassing to give Sarah a painting when she is a better painter than I am. What the heck? She didn't seem to mind. Summer 96 she played the Starlight Amphitheater in Burbank with Paula Cole and Suzanne Vega. I tossed a painting of Paula out when she was on stage. She saw it because it wasn't entirely dark yet (outdoor theater). She said thank you. Later she stepped on it, she stepped on it again, she stepped on it a third time, then she danced on top of it. I think she was just intent on her performance, I don't think she was commenting on its quality. She did take it with her when she left the stage. That's my whole Paula Cole story. I tossed the painting of Suzanne Vega out when she was on the stage. She heard it land but couldn't see it because it was in the dark and she was in the spotlight. She said "Goodness! I'll have to see what that was later". I tape the paper to foam core board so the paintings are easy to handle and toss if need be. This particular toss made a noticeable thump. A stage hand removed the painting from the stage shortly after that. Damn, I didn't get to see her reaction. I'll tell the rest of my Suzanne Vega story some other time. I had two Sarah paintings for this occasion. I gave one painting a good toss and it landed within reach of Sarah. The other hit a cable and stopped short. She saw the first one, picked it up, looked pleased to me and said "Oh, everyone got one tonight". So now I knew Suzanne got her painting. It had never occurred to me until that moment that the three of them (Paula, Suzanne and Sarah) would get together back stage and look at my paintings. I felt really weird about that. One song later, some people came up and put flowers on the stage took pictures of Sarah. The flashes got Sarah's attention and this time she saw the other painting. She said "Oh, there's another one. Thank you". She smiled at those people the way she had smiled at me three years earlier. I guess she thought they were me. Whether they got a picture of that smile or not, those people owe me big time! I've been listening to Shawn for about 7 years now, and before I used to start introducing people to Shawn's music with Steady On. In my opinion, that's her best album, and it's #1 on my list. Right now, I would probably start with AFSR although it's my least favorite Shawn album. However, I do believe that if somebody likes, say, "Trouble," "Facts About Jimmy," or "New Thing Now" (or even "What I Get Paid For") I'd know that he or she would be ready to apreciate early Shawn stuff. What do you think? Another thing. What do you all think about "Mona Lisa" being the next single? I think it's a safe choice, although I would've thought she would be more daring and release "New Thing Now," "Jimmy," or maybe even "Suicide Alley." I called up for tickets and they are 32.50 for the cheapest ones but they have about 8 dollars worth of "handling charges" and stuff like that. For two people to go it would be 80 something dollars for the cheapest seats. It isn't a big place. Duncan Sheik is opening and once again it is July 22nd. To call for tickets --- (516)- 888-9000 [ticketmaster] and ask about the show. ========================================================= This has been a post from Small Repairs. She didn't seem to know where to look, the band didn't seem to know the song, and the backup singer's microphone must have really been messed up. In short, that performance was nothing like the Shawn Colvin I know. Roger >> But...but.... i thought it was good. I thought perhaps being sleepy-eyed and exhausted that early in the morning may have clouded my judgement on this performance, especially since i watched it on a 6-inch tv with one speaker and fuzzy reception... or maybe i was in that blasted Hero-Worship mode again.. But i watched it again on video (i usually fall asleep by the time the musical act comes on) and a bigger tv, and i didn't think it was that bad. I didn't hear the backup, tis' true, and Rebecca does weird things with her thumbs when she sings, but aside from a shaky note or two in the bridge, and one at the end, i thought it was still pretty good! I guess what i really enjoyed the big smile on her face and the glances between her and john during the performance. In other recent talk show performances she seemed so tired, so this was a nice change. okay, okay... t'was hero worship. i concede. :) ~jean bH ~jean ========================================================= This has been a post from Small Repairs. Am I just imagining that I heard it? If it exists, how can I get tickets? Thanks, Max >> Hi Max! Welcome. I sifted through the information that i received from AGF Management and they indeed listed a show for July 22 in Plainview, NY at The Vanderbilt. My recommendation is to call your local ticketmaster and see if they know anything. Meanwhile i will see if i can get some phone numbers for you... (i think they have a website at www.ticketmaster.com. ) Be patient though, my local access provider got zapped by a lightning bolt and i am back to my $.10 per minute rate for online time while i use the America Online toll number. ugh. that puts a slight damper on my usually liberal web surfing. Maybe some of you in the NY area that might be going can help max? Oh... and don't forget you can get updated tour dates on casey's webpage at http://www.tisd.net/~casey/shawn/small_repairs.html. Max, perhaps you can give us a review of the show if you go? But i think that is better than singing "In my dreams i go down by the water, with a little *girl* in my hand..." I also had a lot of trouble with Polaroids...still do actually...okay, in the lyrics thingy, it says "blah blah [not verbatim], all in our uniforms, plaid and black" or "black and plaid" or something, yet every time I listen to the song I hear "all in our uniforms, black and black..."? Which is it? the line goes: "we all in our uniforms black and black..." At least this is what is listed in the Steady On guitar book. I've loaned out my CD so i can't check the liner notes... but i thought it also said "black and black..."
