What about Menudo? Or New Kids On The Block? Don't forget the non-groups ... like Tiffany and Debbie Gibson. Tiffany is about the most underrated pop star from the 80's, I think. Great voice. Couldn't write or play anything, but her voice was able to make anything she did interesting, unless she was trying to be "adult" with power ballads, like some in her second album, and most in her third album. I hear she's now going country. Gibson actually had some talent (she wrote and played in all her songs, and produced many of them), but her voice was weaker. Still, her latest album _Deborah_, which I just picked up 2 days ago, is a gem. Quite a comeback. She's combined her 80's catchiness with maturity to make an album Madonna would be proud of. It'll surprise you, especially if you've heard her cheesy 80's stuff. > P.S. - Yep. I like Hanson, too. Oh, they're great. "Mmm Bop" is one of the funnest songs I've ever heard, yet it's soulful too. > P.P.S. - Just bought a Milli Vanilli CD. You'd be surprised what I had > to go through to find it. This is my goodbye post. I thought we were talking about Shawn Colvin here. I can understand wanting to discuss other artists, but PLEASE! Spice Girls?! Hanson?! and now NEW KIDS and MILLI VANILLI?!?!?!?! No, I don't have time to sift through this crap. When the list first started, we talked about Ani (love her to death), Paula Cole, Meredith Brooks, and artists who are similar in some ways. But I consider discussion of bubble gum pop (which I abhor) to be the straw that had led to my unsubscribing from this list. For years and years (looooooong before Sunny Came Home was even a twinkle in Shawn's eye) I have loved Shawn Colvin for her literary genius, GENIUS. Plain and simple. That's what I thought we were talking about here. I'm a folkie, hard core folkie (hence the e-mail address). And three high-school kids from Oklahoma who are in dire need of a barber aren't my idea of music worth discussing. So goodbye all... Jeez oh man - calling people fascists because they think they're going to discuss Shawn Colvin and get annoyed when everything but Shawn gets discussed? I was hoping this list, with it's input from Shawn's management, would be the place for up-to-date Shawn info and musings about her and and her music. I'm on a lot of music lists (Nanci Griffith, Dar Williams, Catie Curtis, Steve Forbert, Steve Goodman, Susan Werner). Some are moderated, some are not. None go as far afield as this list as gone in recent days. People are there because they want info on that particular artist. If we wanted to discuss other artists, we'd go to those lists. This isn't just a free speech issue - there are lots of places for speech on these other topics - this isn't the right forum for them. A little off topic stuff happens everywhere but this has been totally out of hand with absolutely no Shawn content in dozens of messages. I'm not signing off (yet) but it this continues, then this is not the right place for me. I don't have time to waste reading babble about artists I hate and I don't like being called names because I don't like it. susan At 03:31 PM 7/15/97, Phoenix wrote: >>does anyone think >>this list was created, and that people subscribed, to facilitate >>discussion concerning singing British hookers? I think the time has come for me to step in and set up a few more specific ground rules concerning the posting here on 'Small Repairs'. I'd like to stop this bickering before it becomes a full-blown flame war. First of all, yes -- this is an open forum and as stated in the rules of the list, pretty much anything goes. 'Small Repairs' was modeled after 'FTE', and I still feel that it is the best format for the list. To me, for a list to be a good list it must be allowed to flow and progress in a natural manner. When we sit down and have a face-to-face conversation with people, there is very rarely any set rules about what you can talk about. Again, I think the beauty of a mailing list is that it is like sitting down and having a face-to-face conversation with people ... even if they happen to be thousands of miles away. However, with that being said, I think it is time to set a few ground rules before we have anymore people jumping ship. So, here goes: First of all, for people who want to post messages not related to Shawn (including your bad day, your cool meeting, Hanson, Spice Girls, or *anything* else not directly about Shawn) you *MUST* preface the subject of your message with 'NSC:', standing for No Shawn Content. And this is very important that you do this. If you do not, you will be sent a warning asking you to make sure to put the 'NSC:' tag in all future posts that don't relate to Shawn. If you do it again, you will be notified and then removed from the list. Period. Two strikes and you're out. So, remember -- you're *always* welcome to post anything to the list, just remember the 'NSC:'!! Next for all of the people complaining that the list should be strictly Shawn related. Well, I'm sorry -- but it's just not gonna happen. I think I've made it pretty clear how I feel about that. But, I'm trying to help you out. We all have a handy DELETE button just one click away. This list is not exactly "high-traffic", so when you get a message with "NSC:' please, just DELETE it. I promise, it's not that hard. If you wanna see a list with a whole lot of bullshit, check out the Poe list. My, God -- I usually delete 99.9% of the messages without ever looking at them. But please remember, if you're still not happy with the 'NSC:' rule, 'Small Repairs' is *still* the best place to get the most reliable, up to date info about Shawn on the 'net. So, there's the new rules. I've tried to be fair and reach a compromise that will suit people on both sides of the argument. If you have any comments or suggestions, of course ... please feel free to mail me -- I'm always here for you. Finally, I'd like everybody to consider one other thing. Remember what I said about a face-to-face conversation? Well, think about that whenever you post to the list. The fact is, you're not sending the message to a computer with no emotions, but to a real live human being with concerns, opinions, and feelings just like yourself. If we can all remember that one idea, I think this list can be great!! Thanks for reading. - -Casey; list owner 'Small Repairs: A Shawn Colvin mailing list' 'Small Repairs: A Shawn Colvin Website' =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= / "If I shed a tear, I won't cage it ... if I feel a rage I won't / \ deny it ... I don't believe I was communicating with Edie, I don't know who was answering her fan mail, but for convenience, I'll refer to this person as "she". In early 1990 I sent an self addressed stamped envelope to Edie's record company with a short note asking for a concert schedule. The envelope came back with a photo of a small boy standing in front of a car. On the back was "My favorite picture of me - you better take care of it" and a stamp indicating the photo had been printed in the mid 60's, I forget the date. I'm an amateur painter (I never said I was good), so I painted a portrait based on the photo. I took pictures of that painting and of the original photo and sent them along with a picture of a portrait I had painted of Edie to the record company. The pictures came back marked up with a big black marker. The picture of the original picture had "Nice Car!" on the front and "XOXOX, HUGS & KISSES" on the back. A close up of the face of the painting of the boy had glasses, hair, and a beard drawn on the front and "WILL GROW TO BE THE ONE X" on the back. A picture of the whole painting of the boy had "THIS IS GREAT!" on the front and "TOO SKINNY DON'T YOU THINK?! X" on the back. The picture of the painting of Edie was blacked out on the front and had "USE YOUR IMAGINATION MORE. DON'T TELL ANYONE X" on the back. Also included was a photo of clouds with "ME IN ONE OF THOSE MOODS" on the back. I returned the original photo and sent pictures of the painting of the boy while it was in progress. I also sent some other examples of my work. The pictures, except for the original picture of the boy, came back marked up. She cut out the boy from 4 of the pictures and pasted them to a post card and wrote "RED HOT CHILLY PEPPER" on the front and "I'M A SINGER IN A ROCK 'N ROLL BAND." on the back. A painting of a mission church had scribbling on the front and "ROBOT IN FOUNTAIN" "WHY WASTE TIME PAINTING A COMPOSITION THAT'S BEEN DONE TIME & AGAIN" "CHRISTIANITY IS A FARCE, WHY DO YOU PERPETUATE IT?" on the back. A picture of the boy had "63 CHEVY" on the front and "I'M A REAL WILD CHILD" "THOUGH SHALL PUT NO GODS BEFORE ME." on the back. A picture of a girl had "BIG NOSE" "EARS ARE TOO HIGH" "AWKWARD LITTLE FINGER" "ART BUYERS DON'T WANT OTHER PEOPLE'S FACE ON THEIR WALL" "WHY DO YOU PAINT FROM PHOTOS? USE YOUR HEAD; THAT'S WHAT IT'S FOR!! ABSTRACTION!!" on the back. A picture of a woman had the face scribbled out, breasts drawn on and "NAKED IS BETTER"on the front. On the back was "STRIP TEASE" "BECAUSE YOU COPY PHOTOS & DON'T DEVIATE AT ALL PAINTINGS APPEAR FLAT & AWKWARD & YOU SHOW NO REAL AWARENESS OF DEPTH OF FIELD & HOW TO CREATE EYE FLOW THROUGH COLOR & PERSPECTIVE." on the back. Someone at the office thought she had fun with this and talked me into sending more pictures of my paintings. BIG MISTAKE. I had asked for an autograph and all the pictures had something scrawled across them that wasn't Edie Brickell, but was unreadable. A picture of a woman with her hand reaching out had "I WILL NOT BE REACHING OUT FOR YOU." on the back The others had "THIS WAS MY DOING. X" "I WON'T DO _THIS_ ANYMORE" "I DID THIS AS A FORM OF RESENTMENT" "I SHALL NEVER DO THIS AGAIN" and "I AM THE REAL ARTIST BEHIND E. B. X" on the backs. ========================================================= This has been a post from Small Repairs. So, > remember -- you're *always* welcome to post anything to the list, just > remember the 'NSC:'!! One nice thing about this is that most modern mail programs have filtering built in that can scan, sort, and process incomming messages based on the headers. So if you just want Shawn stuff you can set your software to automatically delete NSC posts before they ever show up in your inbox, or to filter those into a separate folder you can go through when you have the time. Pegasus, the latest free Eudora, and various other programs have filtering features built in. For those using pine or elm with unix, drop me a message (in private mail) and I can tell you how to set up a file that will do the same thing for unix systems (as long as they have a program called procmail built into the mail delivery system...most do, now.) (The only problem with that being that some of the most interesting things on a list, such as finding out about new acts/artists, etc., aren't strictly on-topic, so would canned, too. Too bad there isn't a second abbreviation for "not Shawn, but related" posts. ;) ) Jason ========================================================= This has been a post from Small Repairs. Okay, okay. Everyone take a deep breath... In and out, in and out. Yeah, the list got a little off-topic for a day or two. But we were just having a little bit o fun. You know, a little humor to brighten the day? Laughter = good. This has been medically proven. Yes, i piped in on the Spice Girls topic, but only to make the point that no one on this list should be ashamed to express their musical taste. Like who you like. Hate who you hate. Tell people about it if you want. But the conversations that plague most lists of 'My-Favorite-Artist-is Better-Than-Your-Favorite-Artist' or 'You're-An-Idiot-If-You-Do/Don't-Like-(fill in the blank)' only serves to increase one's blood pressure and the next thing you know, you're are in my drug store where i have to give you a gazillion dollars worth of prescription medicine, because you let someone's opinion get you riled up. Say your piece and move on WITHOUT the personal attacks, because there is no right or wrong when it comes to opinions, remember? (well, except for that critic's review in the Scotsman, eh, Neil?) I could try and convince all of you that Xena: Warrior Princess is hands down the BEST show on television today, but i'd lose. Probably miserably. I can't make you like what i like. Instead, i'll tell you WHY i like it, and if you don't agree, well, you don't agree. I'm still gonna' watch it. :) What we've got here is a diverse group of people with a wide range of tastes. So it is only natural that we stray once and a while as we get to know each other on the list. (As a matter of fact, AGF was interested in our discussion of some of the off-topic subjects.) And yes, the Spice Girls and some of the others mentioned are on the opposite end of the spectrum from shawn, but they came up in the conversation, and we had a little fun with it. Hey--for all we know, Shawn may enjoy these groups too! (heh, heh... anything's possible!) The point is, despite the fact that i am a monumentally HUGE shawn fan, (as those of you who know me personally can attest) even * I * can't talk about shawn every single day. (I know what you are thinking, "so don't talk at all!" ) So let's do this. If your post contains minimal or absolutely no hint of shawn content, indicate that in your subject line with "No Shawn Content" so that those who don't want to read about anything other than shawn can hit the delete button, and those who like to don't mind the chit chat still can. Agreed? I know that there hasn't been much to talk about concerning shawn for a few days, as she is on a brief respite until she gears up for her gruelling tour schedule. But I'm sure when she hits the road, the list will once again flourish with relevant posts. Caro, i hope you will reconsider. I think you have a lot to offer from the folk music point of view. It would be a shame to lose such a devoted fan and music lover over a few days of off-topic conversation. It happens on every list. If there is something you would like to discuss, throw it out there. It's a whole lot easier getting back on-topic when there is a specific topic to get back to. Jason, what can i say? I like the Flock of Seagulls too! Joking, Joking! I'm just Joking. :) i just couldn't resist. Was that in bad taste? sorry. We've got a good thing going here, people. This is supposed to be fun. and It has been so far. I like to laugh. The last thing that i want to read about after 9-hours on the job, 6 days a week, is something Not Fun. So everyone take one more deep breath, and let's get back to Shawn because i'm getting a nosebleed from being on this soapbox, where i definitely don't belong. Title your posts appropriately. And if you want to flame me, do it off the list. ( Or at least make the subject "Flames for Jean." heh, heh. Go ahead, I can take it.) So let's move on, shall we? HERE'S A TOPIC! I got a personal email from someone on the list who has had very little opportunity to hear shawn's work. She was asking me which of shawn's CDs she should get. I found it very hard to recommend one over another. How about a little conversation on what is unique about each CD? I think that Steady On is best for those heart-wrenching moments where you have to face things. I listen to that one when i'm in one of my darker moods. Fat City is more upbeat, sort of cheerful, uplifting. Cover Girl is what i recommend to people to get a feel for how flawless shawn's voice is in live performances. And A Few Small Repairs maybe has a more universal, dare i say, "pop" appeal. Thoughts? Anyone? whew, that was exhausting. Thoughts? Anyone? I'd have to go with 'AFSR' on this one. I look at it like this, because it is the most universal album without compromising any quality, it's a great thing to use to hook people on Shawn. Then, if they like it, chances are they'll like her older, more "folky" stuff too. This is my approach with Tori Amos, too. Whenever I have the chance to get people hooked on her music, I always start them out with 'Little Earthquakes'. This is her most, uhhmmm ... normal album, if you will. Then, if they like 'LE', I move them up to 'Under the Pink' and finally 'Boys for Pele'. But I never start people out with 'Boys for Pele'. Chances are, by the time the CD got to "Professional Widow" they'd be running for the door, screaming for their lives and souls ;) Any way, just my thoughts. Thanx for reading. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= / "If I shed a tear, I won't cage it ... if I feel a rage I won't / \ deny it ... I of course was like the first customer through the stores of the record store this morning and found myself in the middle of the aisle, close to tears, just staring at the beautiful stack of 'Surfacing's sitting there. Awwww ... more than three years after 'Fumbling Towards Ecstasy', it was hard to describe my feelings as I stood there (no doubt drawing looks from all the "normal" people in the store), just basking in the mere exsistence of a new Sarah CD. Wow... So any way, tonight at 1:00 AM I'm on somewhere around my 10th listen to the CD and still have about the same thing to say as I did this morning ... wow!! Folks, I gotta tell you, it's a damn good CD. I like it as much as 'Fumbling' and I guarantee that's no easy task. So, any way, here are the tracks: Building a Mystery I Love You Sweet Surrender Adia Do What You Have To Do Witness Angel Black and White Full of Grace Last Dance ... and here are my thoughts on them. "Building a Mystery" is the first single from 'Surfacing' and it's great. It's classic Sarah -- in the same vain as 'Hold On' and 'Possession'. If it gets as much airplay as 'Possession' got, I think it will probably be her most popular song yet. Next is "I Love You". This song is so beautiful it's hard to put into words. It's like "I Will Remember You" but much more worthy of Sarah ... much more ... honest. It was a depth that "IWRY" lacked. "Sweet Surrender" just plain rocks. I'd describe it as the "Hold On" of 'Surfacing'. I'd also look for it to be the next single. "Adia" comes next. It is a very sad song, but very honest -- I'm liking it more and more (better than "I Love You" ... I think). It kinda reminds me of her real early stuff (like from the 'Touch' era). "Do What You Have To Do" is a melancholy song. At first I wasn't too fond of it, but it's growing on me. Think of it as 'Surfacing's "Good Enough". Next up is "Witness" ... very big and grand. And really just stunning. It's not like anything that Sarah's done before and it's becoming one of my favorites. Someone over on FTE said that it should be the song played at the Pearly Gates ... I'd agree. Then comes "Angel". It was written with a lot of the heroin O.D.'s in the music buisness in mind. It's very slow, high, and articulate. Think "Ben's Song" and you have "Angel". Then comes "Black and White". Then song kinda sneaks up on you. It's not real loud, or real rocking, or real slow, or real anything. But it's a very infectious and great lyrics. I think of it as the "Plenty" or "Elsewhere" of this CD ... the type of song that's real unassuming, but becomes one of your favorites. Next is "Full of Grace". This song, like "I Love You", is just so stunningly beautiful that you forgive the rather lack-luster lyrics. And last, ironically, is "Last Dance". This is an instrumental and should be a required lullabye for all babies ;) So, there you have. My only complaint is the fact that there is only 10 songs. After 3 years, I would have loved to have had a few more. But, I'd always take quality over quanity, and I think that's what Sarah was going for. In the end, I beg you -- even if you're only a small Sarah fan, buy this CD!! It's fantastic and deserves all the success that has been predicted for it.
