Did I miss a post? I knew Shawn and James sang together live recently, but didn't know about the recording. Just in case anyone else missed this : The track is "Yellow And Rose". RealAudio and WAV samples on : http://www.james-taylor.com/ Click on Sounds, then the Hourglass lyrics and sounds link. Weird, the Hourglass page doesn't have a specific URL, nor do the others, they're all the same. Neat site, seems to be regularly updated unlike a certain official site I know of. ========================================================= This has been a post from Small Repairs. Not many people would deny that someone like Shawn Colvin has more talent in her little finger etc. etc. but I really don't think that's the point. Not only are the Spice Girls good at what they do, they are phenomenally good at what they do and will be for the duration of their relatively short shelf life. But don't sneer at the populist. At least the Spice Girls have got a highly developed sense of the irony involved in being popstars in much that same way the Take That did or Madonna does. Let me mix my metaphors and say that it's horses for courses my friends and contemporary music is a broad church. Saying the Spice Girls are crap *at making music* and Shawn Colvin is a genius *at making music* is hardly a valid comparison. If Shawn wanted to compete she'd start wearing sequined hot pants and if Scary, Posh, Ginger, Baby or Sporty want to compete they'd better start learning to play something. At the risk of going down as the list's only Spice Girl advocate can I just say that Wannabe will probably go down as one of the best pop (let me say it again, pop) singles of the decade. Anyway I'm a gay man and we're allowed certain aberrations on the music/taste front. Peace to you all and back to the debate: Bought the Jewel single (just released in the UK) and like it a lot Bought the Paula Cole 'Cowboys' single (just released in the UK) and like it even more. I've got 'I don't want to wait' on a freebie compilation too. She was on TV here last week and looked a little off her head. Is this correct? Saw Meredith Brook(e)s on TV and thought 'pale imitation of Ms Morisette'. Currently not off my sound system are Texas album Dubstar single James single Del Amitri album And still (after nearly a year) A few small repairs. Am I ever going to get bored with this album: After Glastonbury, two friends have bought it after me plaguing them for months and refusing to tape it for them. Yay for me. Speaking with Shawn... she remembered me and asked me how my music was coming along---she shook her finger at me for my answer (:::i blushed with shame:::) 3rd was at the KHFI outdoor concert where she signed autographs on dozens of hot pink beerhuggers for little pre-teen hispanic kids who didnt know who the heck she was (LOL) "Hey lady! sign this for me!" 4th was at the most recent Austin show (S.O.S) at LaZona Rosa---Hal Ketchum (who recently moved here) played her break and i went up to where she was sitting in the front row stage right, squatted down to her and chatted...I asked her if she would give me the opportunity to audition for backup vocals when she went on tour again with the band---she gave me a surprised look, paused, then asked me for my phone number.(i asked this knowing all of her harmony parts to a tee, and i asked this knowing that Kate Markowitz is back touring with James Taylor). I ran off to get a pen and paper but sadly, as i swiftly made my way back to where she was, she had to take the stage again... awww! I wasn't worthy anyway. Perhaps next time! (I'm counting on July 17th at her exclusive show at the Speakeasy in Austin if I am lucky enough to get tickets). 9) OTHER LIKES = Billy Holiday, Nat King Cole, Etta James, Johnny Mercer (my cousin), Jonatha Brooke and the Story, James Taylor, Emily Saliers, Jim Croce, Don McLean, Kristin Hall, David Wilcox, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Cowboy Junkies, Portishead, Erykah Badu, old Marvin Gaye, Patty Griffin, Clandestine (newfolk celtic!) ...just to name a few.. there is so much more 10) NAME (optional) = Mimi Taking poloroids down that long and lonely road to Kindgom Come. Kinda' short & sweet. "Get Out Of This House" was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. A FEW SMALL REPAIRS was nominated for a 1997 Grammy for Best Pop Album. When folk-rock and adult contemporary pop merged in the early '90s to give birth to the adult album alternative radio format, scores of singer-songwriters took the opportunity to bland out for big bucks, shortchanging listeners in the process. Shawn Colvin has emerged as the savior of AAA, bringing classy arrangements and high-quality songwriting to the mix, and inspiring a legion of imitators along the way. Colvin's voice is a supple, elastic thing, bending notes and phrases to suit the idiosyncratic elan that is her trademark. Her songs combine ingratiating pop sensibilities with incisive, often poetic lyrics. Together with producer/guitarist John Leventhal, Colvin has created a sonic landscape that seduces the listener with rich, atmospheric washes of guitar and unabashedly pretty horn and string arrangements, while never obscuring the simple melodic statements that are the foundation of the songs. A FEW SMALL REPAIRS is the ideal pop confection; light and sweet on the surface, with a thick, chewy center. Reviews: Q Magazine (11/96, p.120) - 4 Stars - Excellent - "...Colvin confirms her position as a major vocalist wiht emotive phrasing and poignant lyrics....the album rolls out a series of personal parables that are at once chilling and insightful..." Entertainment Weekly (10/25/96, pp.116-117) - "...Full of wisdom and ravishing melodies, REPAIRS is a tour de force that needs no fixing." - - Rating: A P165847/231482 (C) Muze, MTS Incorporated ========================================================= This has been a post from Small Repairs.
