I thought pop tarts were a form of breakfast product you put in the toaster, some a bit too sweet with too much icing (frosting? in the US) on the top. :) I like Sheryl. Her first album was one of the best I'd heard in ages. I saw her first, second and third concerts in the UK/London. - Both very small venues - The Borderline and The Underworld. Then at The Empire, Shepherds Bush. All were very good, but The Borderline gig was special. She was much more rocky than she normally is, with a really tight band - the bass player was brilliant. Unfortunately, I'm not too keen on her new album, much too one line, chorus, chorus, chorus, chorus. I really think Sheryl's co-conspirators on TNMC brought out the best in her. Sadly they've all fallen out now. > Second, I'd be willing to bet that there's a tiny misquote here, unless > Shawn has some British-English background I don't know about. > The last part, "whether you should have done" is a typical British > construction, but something you'd rarely hear from an American. > (Americans would just say, "whether you should have.") I checked and it definitely says "done" in the article, so you can put that down to the interviewer, Barney Hoskyns. I'm not a linguist really. (It's been difficult as a Scot to get The English to understand me down here in London and vice-versa :)), but I checked the spelling and grammar (waste of time) of the article in Word and it didn't come out too well. I'd be interested to see how it handles an interview with Bill Gates! The worrying thing that did come out was that (until I updated the dictionary) every time the spellcheck encountered Colvin, it suggested replacing with cloven (as in cloven hoof)! Are we soon going to see a court case a la Judas Priest, devil worship etc. You have been warned, don't play any of Shawn's records backwards!!!, they may have subliminal messages embedded. Still, even backwards, I'm sure they'll sound better than many of the artists around these days! BTW, anyone checked out that Spice Girl site yet? If you are unsure about the nature of it, it is a game where you get points for slapping a Spice Girl. Please don't e-mail me with comments about violence to women, I'm against violence period (unless, maybe I encountered the critic from The Scotsman). It's a bit of fun, check for yourself. Anyway, The Spice Girls aren't human, let alone female, just a few pieces of plastic packaged up in a cardboard box called hype. > > Yes! I *am* an obsessive amateur linguist. It's on Audionet, and they now have radio shows from "Women In Music"..a show out of Boston, evidently. It features artists such as Shawn, and many of the names I've seen mentioned on this list. I've just started listening to it, and one of Shawns songs is "Trouble". Another one, which I haven't listened to yet includes an interview. You need RealAudio to listen to it, and you can download it free on this site. The sound isn't the best quality, but I look at this as an introduction to many other artists, and the ones I like most, I will most likely go CD shopping for. Here is the URL: http://www.audionet.com/shows/womeninmusic/ Enjoy, Amy S. (Returning to lurk mode) ========================================================= This has been a post from Small Repairs.
