Did you get to meet shawn? > > inquiring minds want to know... > :) > ~jean Hi, Jean and everyone -- The following is the note I posted on AOL about wussing out on meeting Shawn at Telluride. Which leads me to a question, Do you think AGF might consider letting us loyal Shawn fans into the meet and greets before the shows on the new tour. I would be ever so grateful to meet her in Berkeley, and if it were a real reception, I'm sure I would not wuss out. What do you say, guys? Meanwhile, I'm back from going to the Telluride Bluegrass Festival to see Shawn and MCC and enjoying being able to breath some real air! With real oxygen in it! I'm from California, and I don't trust any air I can't see. I dragged my sister along with me, as she loves the Rockies, and we stayed at the very posh The Peak resort and spa, which is way the hell up there -- even higher than Telluride itself. You can take the new gondola down to Telluride. The Peaks is part of a new development called Mountain Village, and to minimize the environmental impact, they have this gondola and tourists are not allowed to bring cars in for the most part. Telluride is very exclusive in an organic sort of way and the festival itself has all its little rules and regs, and I've got to tell ya it all kind of bugged me. I felt like I was in some very luxurious prison, and I was afraid to draw attention to myself or p*** off the guards. That together with altitude sickness (I'm no spring chicken and it was HIGH - -- I've been to Aspen before and loved it, no prob), and I didn't exactly take advantage of the whole festival the two days I was there. However, it was well worth it for the awesome experience of seeing Shawn, MCC, John Jennings, Duke Levine, and Jim Lauderdale perform in a small park in town right in front of me! (There were other people there too, I guess ...) My guardian angel was with me on the van ride Friday night from the Montrose airport to The Peaks because the fellow sitting behind me had a guitar with him and I asked him if he was performing at the festival. He said he was doing a songwriting workshop with Shawn Colvin and Mary Chapin Carpenter the next day in a park downtown. (That was what I had come for!) I did not wet my pants, but asked where he was from. He said Nashville, so I asked if I should know him. He said he was Jim Lauderdale, and praise the lord I remembered his name from Patty Loveless's albums. I haven't even listened to them that much! He named his songs and even started singing them, but I couldn't place them. Tres embarrassante. So, the next morning, I gondola'd down to the town at noon sharp and there were some very good acts at the park. The winners of the Telluride Troubador contest and a bluegrass band that was really good and funny. Then I saw that the songwriters workshop was scheduled for SUNDAY at noon. So, I cruised around the town and then went back to the hotel, going to the festival that night to see MCC. She was great as always, but most of the songs were from her latest album, which I didn't care for as much as the others. If you asked me to make a list of MCC songs I didn't like so much, it would have been the set list. I saw her two years ago on the Stones in the Road tour and was much more impressed and uplifted, etc. Shawn joined her for Passionate Kisses, The Better to Dream of You, and The Hard Way. Definitely the highlight of the show. They segued from The Hard Way to Desperado complete with charade moves, and it was hilarious. It also went from hot to freezing while I was there and I found out the purpose of Teva sandals, which I always thought were the ugliest things I had ever seen and had no redeeming social value. I ruined a perfectly great pair of espadrilles. (Perhaps you intuit I am not athletic.) So the trip was not going 100%, shall we say. My sister, on the other hand, was living the life at The Peaks. Next morning, after a nice room service breakfast, I gondola'd down to the park again. Brought my chair, beach towel, industrial strength sun screen, everything I would need to see me through to the Shawn concert at the festival that night. Set up in the park, and was reading a book. Glance up, and there are (from left) on the little stage: John Jennings, Shawn, Jim Lauderdale, MCC, and Duke Levine. They are looking mighty fine. And let me tell you, Shawn is buff. She was wearing short shorts and a cotton camisole top, so there. They all looked happy and relaxed. I had seen Shawn the previous Tuesday here in Saratoga, and she looked tired and pale, although in great spirits and voice. By Saturday, she's tanned and relaxed and looking gorgeous. She and MCC are great friends, as they both testified to at their respective concerts. Shawn's great looks and MCC's fame and fortune do not seem to get in the way of their love for each other AT ALL, and if you don't think that is remarkable ... well, you live in a different world than I do. God bless you, and please don't e-mail me. They all performed solo and together. Jim Lauderdale valiently tried to get them to talk about songwriting, but they were more interested in singing and fooling around. John Jennings, MCC, and Shawn are quite a trio when it comes to wit. Topics included Spectravision (natch), Mel Gibson, The King and I, Julie Andrews doing Oklahoma, Sling Blade, qua (and Jerry McGuire), The Exorcist, boys banter on the bus (definitely not PC!), etc., etc. Shawn sang Here We Are, Shotgun Down the Avalanche, and The Fall of Rome. MCC did A Place in the World, new slow version of House of Cards, and a brand new song called 100 Days (very funny country song, going to be a big hit IMO). The other musicians played and it was very, very beautiful. She asked MCC to do Shotgun with her and MMC said they did it at their sound checks. Shawn said, what did they do to it! And JJ said they played it fast! So, they said, yeh, let's do a bluegrass version (Levine played mandolin), and Shawn was right on it, singing fast without missing a fraction of a beat. Then she stopped and said she wanted to do the Sling Blade version, slow with Billy Bob grunts. Together, Shawn and MCC sang Four Seasons in One Day. Jim Lauderdale had introduced Shawn to Crowded House when they were both in a musical called Diamond Studs in Cleveland, so it was all, as Shawn said, Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon. JJ sang his song Everybody Loves Me and Duke played an instrumental. Jim Lauderdale played his songs, and was really great. He had been opening for MMC. They all sang along on Halfway Down, the one I should have known in the van. Afterward, I sauntered over to the side of the little stage where I saw the other woman in the audience besides myself who was wearing a Shawn Colvin t-shirt. Three or four women were there with CD covers, etc., and Shawn was signing them, and I thought, what an eejit I am, I didn't bring anything. What am I gonna do, ask her to sign my Neutrogena sunblock stick? Her fiance was with her, and I just hung back, dumbstruck, while she signed things for a minute. I was going to say at least congratulations to them, but they were ready to leave and Shawn looked in my direction and said "Let's go the other way." Story of my life. Her concert was that night, and it was shorter than her concert, as it was the closing night with two acts to go, David Crosby and his biological son (don't ask), and Lyle Lovett. Lyle joined Shawn for The Facts About Jimmy, and MCC joined her for One Cool Remove and Round of Blues. Both came back out for the encore Someday and forgot the words. Shawn was wearing a cropped top and hip huggers, and believe me, she is not fat. Other songs: Sunny Came Home, Cry Like an Angel, You and the Mona Lisa, I Want It Back, Ricochet in Time (YAY!), Fearless Heart (YAY!!), Trouble, Diamond in the Rough. I also think she sang I'll Be Back, either at the festival or the park. PS That afternoon, I ran into MCC on the street. She was walking quickly with people on each side, like they do, and I called out "You were great this morning. Chapin! You were great! " And she gave me a great smile and said thanks. She is a goddess to me now. The next morning I had to get up at 4 to catch a 7:00 flight to Phoenix. But it was worth it. Next year, I want some of you to go with me, so we can stake out a tarp at the festival and you can talk to Shawn if I wuss out again! ========================================================= This has been a post from Small Repairs. The author’s views are not necessarily my own, but I agree with nearly all of them. PS The word “yoof” is a colloquialism for youth. MOJO: MARCH 1997, WHAT GOES ON SECTION. NOT IN BED WITH MADONNA No Alanis or Sheryl, Shawn Colvin may not be one of the girls, but she's all the better for it, contends Barney Hoskyns. AFTER A GREAT deal of wandering throughout the 40 years of her life - from smalltown South Dakota to Ontario to San Francisco to New York City, with many points inbetween - Shawn Colvin feels as though she may finally have come "home". As she devours the mouth-watering okra and buttered squash in Threadgill's, the famous joint where Janis Joplin sang folk songs 35 years ago, she declares that Austin, Texas might even be "a comfortable place to die". Turns out that Colvin has called Austin "home" before. Twenty years ago she hitched her wagon to a Western swing band called The Dixie Diesels and headed South to Texas from her claustrophobic hometown of Carbondale, Illinois. Austin was still a pretty funky place in 1976; back then it didn't need to flaunt itself as "the live music capital of the world". Asleep At The Wheel ruled, Flatlanders roamed the streets, and the Armadillo World Headquarters was packing 'em in on Barton Springs Road. "Our main gig was a dive called the Split Rail," Colvin chuckles. "The owners hadn't even bothered to build a floor there." Colvin might also be said to have come "home" on her fourth album, the superb A Few Small Repairs. After the somewhat overproduced Steady On (1989) and Fat City ('92) - albums brimming over with great songs but buckling under the weight of their influences (Joni Mitchell, Suzanne Vega) and the muso showiness of their arrangements - and a 1994 covers album which cost her a significant amount of momentum, she has done the right thing and stripped away the sonic layers to reveal the real Shawn Colvin beneath. And what a singer and writer this is: at a time when it's hard to move for meretricious female solo artists, it's heartening to hear a woman whose music has really been...well, earned. Were there many better songs than Trouble or Sunny Came Home or The Facts About Jimmy written last year? I doubt it. Aided by her brilliant producer and songwriting partner John Leventhal - the former boyfriend who produced the Grammy-winning Steady On - Colvin pulls out all the stops on Small Repairs: angry, helpless, bittersweet, resilient, wrapped in startling tunes and sparkling arrangements, the record is as strong a collection of songs as Aimee Mann's I'm With Stupid or Maria McKee's Life Is Sweet, and it makes a mockery of the Crows and Morissettes of this world. So why isn't it selling as well as Jagged Little Pill, or even Sheryl Crow? Because Colvin is still perceived as a 'folk' singer? Because it's not pitched at messed-up middle class teenagers? Or merely because Colvin - like Mann and McKee - is less of a pop tart than Sheryl Crow? In the song New Thing Now, the penultimate track on Small Repairs, Colvin is savage about the vogue for angst-ridden young ladies. "Gee, it's good to see a dream come true/People smile and bless all over you/Mixing up those latest junkie-isms/With all the pretty terms of religion/And don't you love the leader of the band/Equal parts Butthead and Peter Pan..." The song was actually written some time ago, at a point when it was impossible to get away from Courtney Love - a situation, ironically, which has returned with the release of Milo Forman's film The people Vs Larry Flynt, co-starring Love. "Courtney was on the cover of everything, and she was just blabbing, and it was buggin' me," Colvin says. "It tore me up to be envious of that kind of haphazard, devil-may-care bravado that seems like confidence - and maybe sometimes is. Sheryl Crow probably had something to do with it too, though I liked Tuesday Night Music Club. There was just stuff happening that made me realise my timing was just a little off - that I was too old and things were not happening at the right time. I really was upset about it." Colvin's honesty on this subject is as refreshing as the honesty on her bracing new single Get Out Of This House. Like much of Small repairs, the song was written after the break-up of the singer's marriage to road manager Simon Tassano - which does not mean, as some critics have suggested, that the album is a "song cycle" about her divorce, or a new Blood On The Tracks. "I'd venture to say that Steady On is a bigger break-up record than this one, but the interest in my personal life then was nil. I think the disillusionment that came with the failure of my marriage is very much on the record, but it's a disillusionment that went across the board for me. It wasn't just my failure - I felt let down by the country, by societal values in general, by the O.J. thing. Plus I turned 40 and began to think about death a lot. I felt like I’d crossed a line and was now in the second half of the book. So the death of the marriage came to symbolise a lot of things to me. I was 40 and I was gonna die and I didn’t have any children yet - and I was funnelling all my self-worth into what we call art but which I had to play a corporate game in order to do. All of this just made me question a lot of things.” Children, of course, are something female singer-songwriters are not supposed to talk about: they’re antithetical to rock’s angst, a fundamental unsexy subject. This makes Colvin’s willingness, in the poignant piano ballad If I Were Brave, to discuss her pain at not having kids - and to describe herself as “a clown to entertain the happy couples” - all the more admirable. “Women have really responded to that song,” she says. “At one time, as a woman you were expected to have kids, and now you don’t have to. Then suddenly you realise you’re almost out of time...and you begin to panic and wonder whether you should have done.” Divorce, procreation, maturity, death - meaty themes in an entertainment field that is youth-obsessed to the point of blindness about the fact that life goes on after 30. The truth is that artists like Colvin really aren’t welcome at the pop table any more: unlike Jewel and Poe and Tracy Bonham, they remind too many of the emotional retards in the music industry of their own mortality. Perhaps pop is merely the self-celebration of yoof; perhaps greying gals and balding blokes should stop trying to “keep up” with rock’n’roll. But it would be a pity if music as penetrating as Colvin’s no longer found an audience. As Bishop Berkeley said of the tree falling in the forest: if nobody out there heard it, would it exist? ========================================================= This has been a post from Small Repairs. My favorite Shawn gigs are all pretty much the same... I used to live in Nashville, and she came to sing at 328 Performance Hall about twice a year. It was great... I saw her there about 4 times, with basically the same crowd every time. She had a great rapport with the audience because she knew the audience so well from playing there so much. She carried jokes from the previous performances over into the current ones, and it was just very vibey, very intimate. The last time I saw her in Nashvegas, though, was at the Ryman Auditorium, a much bigger venue. Definitely lost some of that intimacy that we all know and love about her performances. I guess that's just part of getting popular....{sigh} ANd for the record, Casey, I love Paula Cole... I think she is amazing and I really respect that part of her that is not afraid to try anything (like whistling at the end of a song). Last week its first episode featured live performances and interviews by artists Paula Cole and also k.d. lang. This week is Taj Mahal and Albita. This is not a smart-alecky thing;= =20 this is at least the second time I have heard this particular word used=20 in connection with those albums, and I really do not understand what=20 it's supposed to mean. << Or merely because Colvin - like Mann and McKee - is less of a pop=20 tart than Sheryl Crow? >> I'm only a mild Sheryl Crow fan, but as a woman I take offense to her=20 being described as a pop tart!!! << Children, of course, are something female singer-songwriters are not supposed to talk about...[snip]..."Then suddenly you realise you=92re almost out of time...and you begin to panic and wonder=20 whether you should have done.=94 >> =20 First, I didn't cut & paste this whole paragraph (to avoid annoying you),= =20 but I love it. If I Were Brave is the AFSR song that touches me the=20 most personally and the most vividly, and I was glad to hear Shawn's=20 own comments about this song. Second, I'd be willing to bet that there's a tiny misquote here, unless=20 Shawn has some British-English background I don't know about. =20 The last part, "whether you should have done" is a typical British=20 construction, but something you'd rarely hear from an American. (Americans would just say, "whether you should have.") Yes! I *am* an obsessive amateur linguist. And de-lurking for the second time! (Jean, are you proud?) Shelley :) ========================================================= This has been a post from Small Repairs.
