I recall seeing her on the Cover Girl tour at the Duchess of York in Leeds; tiny little bar gig with me all of 10 feet away from the lady herself. Excellent gig, marred only by my companion passing out from the heat, and having to stand for so long. Either that or she was just knocked out by Shawn's performance... :-) Speaking of heat, I'm praying that today is cooler than yesterday... I think the issue before that had a review of the single in its Singles/Albums reviews section, which is also available online at: http://www.dotmusic.com/MWreviews.html Note that the Shawn review isn't online any more - they keep in sync with the paper version, but I'd highly recommend bookmarking that URL anyway - it's the only regular online weekly review of new UK single and album releases that I've found to date. On another UK note, the first video played on last week's "VH-1 Country" on UK VH-1 was indeed Shawn's "Sunny Came Home" - this might be the *only* UK show playing the video I suspect :-( Weird stuff with burning film, burning matches and Shawn on a trapeze... My secretary was going out with a BBC radio newsreader at the time, so I asked her to sweet talk her man and try and get me the full tape. Unfortunately, I'm still waiting. Come to think of it, I'm still waiting for some corrections to the typing she did for me way back then. > I'm pretty sure Shawn's venue in London for the Fat City tour was The Jazz Cafe in London Parkway. I was unemployed at the time and did some serious PR with some friends who were in my line of business. I took 6 of them to see Shawn. Every one of them became a convert AND I got a job one month later. Thanks Shawn. Coincidentally, one of my friends fainted just as Shawn came on. Don't worry. We were alright; she'd bought us a round of drinks before she fainted. :) Seriously, though, she recovered pretty quickly and thoroughly enjoyed the show. I've still got the T Shirt : "Shawn Colvin and the masters of rhythm and taste. Fat City Tour 1993" As for favourite (favorite, Jean) gig, verrry difficult. The Arches, Glasgow a couple of weeks ago, probably, although The Jazz Cafe gig was great. My first concert was The Mean Fiddler in North London where Shawn played with T Bone. I'm sure she played a cover of "Baby, now that I've found you", which Alyson Krauss had a hit single with. Alyson thanked Shawn in her speech when she won a Grammy a couple of years ago, or was it a Country Music award?, I can't remember. I do remember Shawn telling a story about T Bone at The Mean Fiddler. After a song in which T Bone had played an outstanding accordian solo, Shawn said that they had been playing a concert in the US, had just played that song and Bonnie Raitt came up to them after backstage. She said to T Bone "Are you married?" to which he had replied yes. He then asked why and Bonnie replied. in a croaky drawl (Shawn was impersonating again) "Well she's got to be pretty lucky." When asked why again, she said. "Any woman married to a guy whose fingers can move that quickly has gotta be the luckiest woman in the world." > ========================================================= This has been a post from Small Repairs. I'd like to hear if many of you are intested in reading my other stories. The first concert I ever went to was a 10,000 Maniacs concert in 89. I was quite taken with the lead singer, Natalie Merchant. I came across a picture of her in a magazine and decided to paint her portrait for a class I was taking in painting for my relatively new hobby of painting (I'd been painting less than a year). It was the first half way decent portrait I ever did. I borrowed a stack of Rolling Stone magazines and found another picture of her. I put a lot of time and effort into the second portrait of her and I was naively proud of my accomplishment. Also, a complete stranger stopped by the class, saw my painting and asked me if I was familiar with 10,000 Maniacs. I said "congratulations, that's exactly who it's supposed to be". I sent an 8X10 photo to the fan mail people with a stamped self-addressed envelope and a request for an autograph. Months later, I sent letter to the fan mail people asking if the photo had been lost. A few weeks later, the 8X10 came back autographed: Greg Wonderful painting x Natalie That photo is still a highly prized possession. I shipped the painting to the fan mail people with a $10 check to cover the cost of shipping it to Natalie and a request to get it to her. The fan mail woman sent me a note saying she was sure Natalie would treasure it. This stunned me. I figured on brightening her day, but had no intention of having a lasting effect. "Was that possible?" I wondered. With an oil on canvas and the shipping I figured this had cost me over $50 and I thought that was a lot of money for a present for a perfect stranger. The next painting I did was a small watercolor which cost less than $1. I saw 10,000 Maniacs at the Universal Amphitheater. They wouldn't let me leave the painting on the stage but they would let me leave it at the stage door. So I didn't get to see her reaction. This was in 92. In 95, I saw 10,000 Maniacs at the Wiltern Theater (about 2000 seats I think). I did two oil on watercolor paper paintings, I wanted to take two tries at handing a paining to her. I was not able to time my two trips from the nosebleed section to the stage to hand them to her, so I tossed them on stage. When she picked up the second one she said "I'm getting lots of presents tonight, thank you" (she had gotten flowers too). It wasn't much, but it was a thank you. In 96, she was touring as a solo act. I had gotten to the Ticket Master booth second in line when tickets went on sale. By some incredible fluke of good fortune, I got a front row seat! This was at the Santa Barbara County Bowl, which is a large venue. I did two oil on watercolor paper paintings. I placed one of the paintings on the stage in front of me hoping to get her attention to get her to come over so I could give it to her. She didn't come over. I thought she might not have seen it so I tossed one out on to the stage and placed one in front of me. This too failed to get her to come over. I moved the painting in front of me around to get her attention to come over and even called out that I had a present between songs. She didn't come over. It seemed to me that she was avoiding looking my way. I suspect she had noticed, but was concentrating on her performance. The woman sitting next to me claimed to be from the radio station that sponsored the event and said she would see to it that the paintings got to Natalie if I gave them to her. I didn't much like that idea. Finally, before the last song of the last encore, she came over. I stood up and handed her the second painting. She smiled and said "Thank you". I said "You're welcome". The moment when our eyes met was cut short by the spotlight hitting me in the eyes, but it happened! She then picked up the other painting and set them aside. I know it doesn't sound like much compared with some of my other stories, but it meant more to me than anything else I've done with this weird hobby. It occurred to me briefly on the way home from the concert to worry that Natalie might have thought I paid a scalper a large sum of money or bribed someone to sit in the front row. I feared that she might think I spent a lot of money just to be able to hand her a present. I feared that she might think I'm some weird stalker type. Then I decided it was awfully arrogant of me to think she gave me a second thought and I felt better.
